Is there possibility to create custom ROM for Samsung Galaxy with Android 2.0 without waiting for an official one? Samsung released source code for the system, it shouldn't be too difficult to port open sourced drivers for phone components even if they have different kernels (or is it? why?).

I think that the main reason is that for Android 2.0 or 1.6, we need the kernel 2.6.29
Well the kernel is part of the reason. The other part would be the drivers. Apparently the drivers have changed quite a lot hence the reason HTC mentioned that they aren't thinking of releasing 2.0 yet.
