I am in China with a galaxy i bought overseas (taiwan) and i have the APN settings set up according to what i was given from china mobile (just a name: cmnet and an ip: 10.0.0.172) and i can browse OK. google maps doesn't load anything. i just see the white grid. my old, crappy, 50 dollar sony ericsson did google maps fine with gprs/edge, as does my wife's htc touch and my friend's new iphone. we have the same settings on each device. is there something i am missing someplace? google maps is fine using wifi but nothing with gprs/edge. i need to switch to another phone company to get 3g so i am stuck with this. google maps is practically the only app i actually need. anyone else having the same problem?
I still can't access Google maps. This phone sucks. Will improved firmware actually improve the user experience if it ever comes or should I swallow the loss and just buy a better phone? Camera is pointless. Bluetooth is pointless. Gps is weak, compass poor. I was happier with a 50 dollar phone. I seem to spend a lot of time on this forum tryingto justify an expensive mistake.

still can't get google maps to work on edge. in wifi it's fine. i am sure the apn settings are right. is there something i am missing? anyone? updated to k5. still same problem. everyone i know has no trouble getting google maps on their phones.
*edit: here's one thing that's weird. in the APN settings, I am supposed to have 'MNC' set to '00' but if I do, the whole set of APN settings gets deleted and I have to do it all over again. The default seems to be '02' but the few sites that i found in chinese (I am in Beijing) say I need to put in '00' (incidentally, they just got the galaxy here a couple of weeks ago. their phones come with K2 firmware.)

I 2 m struggling with the same issue from last 3 weeks. I'm in India and this (Internet on mobile[WAP]) thing just don't seem to work at all. "GPRS Internet" works well, though. Any attempt to tweak MNC value causes the whole setting to get deleted. Don't know what to do with it. Did u find any solution to MNC values auto deletion?
nope. MNC is automatically set to 02, but the provider (china mobile) says it needs to be set to 00, which auto-deletes the whole entry. i don't know what MNC does, but am guessing that it must be the reason my google maps won't load.

I use it in Bangalore, India with Vodafone Karnataka and face absolutely no issues at all with Edge. Maps work perfectly, GPS gets a fix in the open under 30 secs and it's accurate upto 20 metres.

Hi, i use Spice Gprs (now Idea Cellular) and i think there used to Spice network in Karnatka too. Can u confirm for me if the following settings work well for spice gprs:
APN : spiceexcite
IP : 10.11.12.13
Port : 9401
Above settings work for sometimes and sometimes not. Like if i request some heavy web page or some heavy file, the connection disconnects, the Edge icon disappears, then i have to restart the handset and it rarely restores back to the previous.

Dude no idea, as I told you I use Vodafone, and it will be impossible for me to verify the settings without a spice connection.... BTW vodafone GPRS is pretty solid....
Thanks Gurdeep. So it looks like I had the settings right after all. China Mobile is 460/02. And I still can't get google maps to open using edge/gprs. So either I get 3g which requires me to change my phone number and switch to a new provider, or i pitch the phone. i bought a smartphone for the maps. bummer.

My pleasure May be u can try migrating to 3g from ur existing SIM without discarding it and going for a new. I wish u find some solution at the earliest. BTW "gprs" works well for me, maps n all that... the problem is only with WAP connectivity over Edge network.
i am with china telecom that uses a different 3g standard (cdma). i need to change to china unicom to get 3g on this phone (wcdma).
is there any other way that i can download maps to use offline with gps? i know the iphone has apps that can cache google maps. i haven't been able to get one to work with the galaxy.

Consider "CoPilot Live 8" from the link at the bottom.
I haven't used it myself but u might like to give it a try. It doesn't require Internet connectivity once relevant maps get downloaded (even from the PC, i guess).
hey dude.. I got a galaxy too and i'm using vodafone (chennai).
Can u tell me how to activate GPRS? I tried calling the Vodafone care, but they r not able to help properly.
@abhinax you'll have to opt for Vodafone Mobile Connect. Vodafone Live will not load many sites for e.g. https enabled sites. After you activate mobile connect, in the APN settings, name it as Vodafone live and APN : www and you are all set
I also have an android based samsung galaxy spica on a vodafone bangalore prepaid connection. For me also i can browse the net using the browser but none of the other applications are able to access the net (like maps, twitter etc even https pages).
I think vodafone only allows port 80 access on their vodafone live. I will try vodafone Mobile comnnect and let u know ...
As of now they are quoting some exorbitant rater like 10 pais / 10 KB = RS 10 / MB = RS 10000 / G

Vodafone has two _Internet_ options. Vodafone Live which is cheap, and I guess is just WAP; Vodafone Mobile connect which is expensive, but as you say, is GPRS. So things probably didn't work for me because what I was using is just WAP.
I'm however glad to find out that Tata Docomo's GPRS scheme (I guess that's both GPRS and WAP) works fine, and is cheap as well.
I have the same problem. I bought a samsung galaxy spica last week and can't access Google maps or the market app at all through gprs, though both work perfecly through wi-fi. Browsing the net works fine through gprs (am posting this through my phone itself ). Has anyone been able to resolve this?
Did anyone try Vodafone Mobile Connect to resolve this issue ? The access point for Vodafone live is portalnmms whereas the one for Vodafone Mobile Connect is www. The default access point present when i bought the fone was actually www only. So is it that the fone expects the user to get Vodafone Mobile Connect only ?

Yes Hemant.
Android has some issues with wap access point. Atleast with 1.6 & 1.5. Don't know about 2.0 & 2.1. I have tried with airtel wap, aircel wap, settings. Same problem.

Yes i did try Vodafone Mobile connect recently, then everything started working. Problem is the VMC rates are ridiculously high. Tried my brother's loop mobile and everything works with the normal gprs plan itself. Same with Idea cellular. Am seriously waiting for the number portablility thing to start, will then ditch Vodafone for Tata Docomo. Till then i'm thinking of trying VMC for a month (the Rs.250 for 100mb plan)
The thing is Android is a very internet dependent platform, with most apps requiring an internet connection. It really helps to have a good data plan.
I finally got it worked out. As it turns out, the plan that I was on (EasyOwn) is just WAP. I upgraded to a new one called M-Zone and now it uses GPRS and everything works. This is after quite a few calls to China Mobile and asking around at various shops that sell SIM cards for the various plans. It seems that a lot of people didn't know the difference.
So Gurdeep.Singh.Mander hit the nail on the head. When I asked that question specifically, they didn't know. So I took a chance and upgraded my plan and 'presto'. Happy as a clam.

Thanks. Can u please give me the settings to be made for vodafone edge on i5700. the settings wat in hav got from the n/w on sim registeration as well as this VL to 52586 is not allowing me to use EDGE. I have activated the service but the settings is troubling.
Name: Vodafone Mobile connect
APN:www
MCC:404
MNC:86
Apn Type:internet
Authentification Type: None
Note:
Rest of the values should be left blank
Thanks for the settings. The reply for ACT VMC25 to 144 is your request could not be processed. This Edge connectivity with vodafone is screwing me.. !

Hi all,
Can somebody give me APN setting for sending/receiving MMS from my Samsung Galaxy mobile ? I am using Postpaid connection from Airtel in Karnataka, India.
I have set AirtelLive APN for GPRS and browsing the internet without any issues. Only MMS is the problem.
I have already checked with Airtel customer care, but they could not give me the proper settings.
thanx for the info, I activated my Vodafone Mobile Connect in my sim, but since I have Prepaid I had to send these codes to 144 instead of 111.
Vodafone GPRS works on every phone
Correct settings for android phones :
Name - vodafone live
APN - portalnmms
Proxy - 10.10.1.100
Port - 9401
MMSC - http://live.vodafone.in
MCC - 404
MNC - 11
Auth. Type - PAP or CHAP
APN type - internet
all other are left blank
Check MCC and MNC setting for each state(search wikipedia for that)
These setting worked for me in Samsung Galaxy S Vodafone Delhi.

I am not sure how it is working for you, I have been trying it from last couple of months on Samsung Galaxy 3 with same settings. Thing is you will be only able to browse websites with these settings but will not be able to access it through any other app (Gmail, Maps, Facebook, etc), so there is no use of it. And talking about VMC, that was meant for accessing Internet by connecting it to your machine. Vodafone live works perfectly fine on Nokia, Samsung (non-android, even on Wave) and many other models with all apps able to connect.
I have been waiting for number portability but it doesn't seems to be here soon. So, now I am planning to switch to Airtel. I tried Aircel, everything is working fine but it is too slow and unavailable at some places.
After fiddling around with some of the settings I finally found a solution for my phone. (It was still able to access the web through the browser, but couldn't use the network for Google Maps, Twitter for Android, etc.):
Under Settings -> Wireless and network -> Mobile Networks -> Access Point Names I found "VF MMS" and "connect."
"VF MMS" was ticked. When I ticked "connect" instead, everything starting working again. (I don't remember altering this setting before, but I may have done so, or maybe some app I installed changed this setting.)
So for my Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant from t-mobile in the U.S., setting it to "connect" makes Google Maps, Twitter and other apps work well on the Vodafone network here in New Zealand. No more "network connection lost - retrying" messages.
I hope that saves someone from having to figure this out all over again. The guys at the local Vodafone shop weren't aware, so I've let them know as well.

First you're in the wrong part the forum. Try asking in the Galaxy Spica.
Btw, did you try using a Wi-Fi if you can log into google mail? Did you do an update of Gmail? I think there is one on the Market. Anyway try first this steps and if it not works ask in the right part of the forum.
I am Using HTC Desire i have to access net in it. so i require APN Settings fully to run it. I have Idea cellular and activated net account but its not working bcoz of apn setting plz tel me the setting for idea (M.P.-Ujjain).
