Default What are the odds of Android 2.2 (Froyo) on the Galaxy?

There have been some silly announcements of 2.2 Froyo being 450%
faster than 2.1 Eclair.

It's not important how much faster it will be... the important thing is
they've seemingly worked on improving speed, which in turn probably
means resource usage is lower, which could also mean hardware
requirements are lower and perhaps it will run fine on older phones.

Anyway, I doubt Samsung will be giving us 2.2 instead of 2.1, so I'm
curious whether there is any chance of us getting it some other way?

Are there any reasons why 2.2 would not be able to run on the Galaxy?

Samsung has never liked supporting older models of phones !!

So getting FRYO on Samsung i7500 is like a dream

if any other device with 192 mb ram gets froyo, then galaxy might get it but with long delay.

I was curious whether work done for 2.1 paves the way for 2.2 or not.
As in, can stuff be reused and built upon or is it all anew?

let us pray that fragmentation will be a big enough problem for google that they will start pressuring mobile carriers to release updates for every phone, i think there's a chance of that actually happening (probably in a few months of course...)

hero is htc which is a google partner and its been delayed again
spica is different hardware and came some 6 months after galaxy and has more memory and a slightly faster cpu

moment has loads more memory and a slightly faster cpu

192mb ram 528mhz chip and minimal support tells me you are in dreamworld
were not even getting 2.1 so how you see a slim chance of 2.2
there is no agreement in place for forced updated on current versions of android. google have no power at all over the manufacturers at this point

you're right of course, but i was just trying to point out a couple of phones that are only slightly better than galaxy (which could handle 2.1, it handles mustymod) and are going to get (or already have) 2.1, that's why i'm not abandoning all hope (yet...)

I came here to ask the same question. With Froyo being (supposedly) more efficient and splitting some core functions off and allowing things to run from the SD card you'd think there's a chance the Galaxy would have more luck with Froyo than Eclair. Chances of Samsung porting it seem close to zero, but hopefully Drakaz or someone might have more luck. I wish someone at Google would step up and do something about it, but that seems unlikely and is dissapointing.

I'm waiting for a new phone that has Froyo before I junk my Galaxy.

According to some people the android developers feel that it would bi possible to get Froyo on the G1. If that is the case shouldn't we be able to do the same for the galaxy??

If SAMSUNG can give us offical resource,we can, if not, I think it's a long long waiting for 2.2 even 2.1. As I know, only Drakaz is working on Galaxy 1.6 and 2.1 now, seems no one is supportting Galaxy.

The SDK image is indeed using 2.6.29 though. The AOSP source is not out yet, which will use 2.6.32.

Maybe misreading this, but I guess I wasn't clear, the mytouch has 192mb ram same as our galaxy. So it is possible for i7500 to get an official 2.2 update. We just have a better camera ^^

they're identical at specs that are critical in order to upgrade (ram and cpu), moreover galaxy has 8GB of internal memory, that's more than nexus1, milestone, hero, spica and some other phones put together! this is just unbelievable that we still don't have 2.1 at least

edit
let me correct myself: galaxy has more internal memory than xperia x10, htc desire, htc wildfire, motorola milestone, nexus1, htc legend, samsung i5700 spica, htc hero, htc magic, acer liquid e, acer liquid, samsung i6500, htc g1 and samsung behold 2 put together, but i guess that means nothing to samsung. i hope with all my heart that galaxy s sells extremely poorly, that samsung will loose a ton of money because of this and that many people have read about galaxy being stuck at 1.5 and will be afraid of getting a samsung phone because of potential lack of support

Main improvement on 2.2 is speedup for non-native apps, that's like icing on the cake. I'm more looking forward to 2.1, its multi-touch feature is the bare minimum for a smartphone nowadays

Internal memory =/= RAM memory

The 8Gb of internal memory does us no good as the RAM memory ( 192Mb ) is the problem on the galaxy, same as the slow processor is.

Don't know why ur so upset because internal memory has nothing to do with the lack of 2.1 on our phones.

and obviously with the new jit compiler, cpu shouldn't be a problem either, it's just up to samsung (*sigh*) to either do froyo or release the necessary sources/drives for drakaz & co. to do it for them

i know that dude, i'm just showing how galaxy is way better only in that aspect. and lots of internal memory makes it possible for an OTA update, which will of course never come

According to SamsungFirmwares:

bad and great news. bad: no new android versions for galaxy i7500. great news samsung is testing i5700 updates.
As this guy seems to have links to Samsung I think it's a 100% no to getting any new updates.

Honestly, this can be done. I mean my old HTC Touch CDMA *is* running 2.1 on a custom .25 kernel built by a fantastic guy in New Zealand (look at the Touch CDMA forum on XDA for the awesomeness of a community that has really breathed new life into a phone long past it's "usable" lifetime), so I see no reason that we can't pull things together and have 2.2 running on this beast in a bit of time. I mean, we'll need more that just Drakaz doing the work here and will need to find a way to get/build kernel modules for some of the proprietary hardware that Samsung is using (probably the touchscreen and camera of the top of my head) unless they have folded it all into the offical .29 kernel they built. But I'm very hopeful for a future for my Galaxy. Mostly cause I know that I'm stuck with it for the next 2.5 years

Hey wtf, T-Mobile's mytouch 3g (aka htc magic 32a) has 256mb, you've mistaked it with Vodafone's htc magic (32b version) which indeed has 192 mb as galaxy. The only Androphones with 192 MB RAM are Galaxy i7500, htc g1/dream, htc magic 32b (Vodafone) (not sure about chinese noname phones, there could be one too, but who cares).

btw it's funny to see the words "no phones left behind" coming out from the network that sells behold 2

Tmobiles mytouch 3g only switched to the 288mb ram of the 32A in FEB 2010, so unless they ve put a disclaimer they are only updating the version 1.2 of the mytouch 3g, which i havent seen anywhere, then to me it reads as if they are froyo'ing all mytouch 3g's.

As for the behold 2, it has 320mb of ram, afaik.
