i'd say if you don't have any problems with H6 then don't update... PC Studio still doesn't work with H7.
I had problems when the phone turned off during the night a few times on H7, other than that it's working fine.
Yeah, I'm having the same problem with H7... Phone shutting down unexpectedly (not restarting, but shuting down completely!) and not being recognized in NPS (it was recognized with G6, though there was no update available for me... I'm in O2 Germany). I also think there's a decrease in image quality when I take pics with the camera, and the sound in videos is really bad. Anyone can confirm these?
On the other hand, battery life improved much. I'm using 3G the whole time (as I was doing before the update) to have a fair comparison, and I can really notice the improvement in this field. Touchscreen seems to respond faster, and loading times are definitely shorter.
Finally, I have no idea about this market issue with the protected apps. Anyone can tell me an example of this apps? It seems like I had none of them installed, and now I don't notice this difference. By the way, I see new categories in the market: Themes and Comics, which were not there before updating the firmware.
Any idea about when the update will be officialy available (via NPS) for O2 Germany?
First thing i tried! It doesnt work - to show the missing apps at least. You can install busybox in the normal way since samsung doesnt have it either.
When you do an update from NPS it downloads a tar file which is temporarily stored on your computer. This is the tar file I used to make the above files.
I could SHA1 the tar file, and you could download that, extract its images and compare to the same images you extract from the above files i guess. But there's no real way for you to be sure the tar file itself was legit since we need to rely on a 'internet' user in italy to grab the file for us.
If it helps any, I can vouch for the following MD5 sums as extracted from the .tar that was acquired by NPS (from Samsung [fus.samsungmobile.com], not the link provided on this forum):

Hey kam!
First, thanks for these files and the guide. I've yet to find out if it's better, but I couldn't have done this with the (lack of) official help available from Samsung and the telcos.
Second, you might want to include a warning in that how-to post of yours, that it deletes all data! Granted, I should have known, but even so I'm not even sure how to back this thing up. Luckily it seems my photos are still there, the rest I can just download again (groan).
Hi All
Have been following this post for a while, and decided yesterday to update my phone to H7,all went well with the download, the phone seemed to be working really well untill I receaved an incoming call. The phone will not pick up and I get a message saying that the process com.android.phone has shut down with an error and I have to force close. Out going calls ring out but the person can not hear me but I can hear them . Has anyone an idea what has gone wrong ?
ryko: first do a factory reset from the menu (or recovery image if you installed it). then report if that helped
com.android.phone crashing happens to me too, however I don't know how it affects my phone (i don't have any problems because of it). it doesn't crash during calls though - usually soon after i turn the phone on
Hi mrbrdo,
Thanks for your reply, I have now tried the factory reset, still the same problem,I did notice one thing when I entered my code for the sim card it searched for over 15 min I had to force the phone off and then retried the code for the sim card it registered almost instantly a little to quickly this time.
What is it with all these faulty firmwares. Did no one at Samsung bother to even do a simple quality assurance test of the firmwares before they release them?!
Is it recommended in all cases to do a factory reset after upgrading to H7? I didn't do it...
mrbrdo, I also have this come.android.phone crashing after turning the phone on. Seems we're sharing many problems! =p
If you figure out how to solve it, please let me know.
Hi all,
Have just tried a new reinstall of H7 and this time for the moment anyway I have no more problem with my incoming and outgoing calls. Will keep you informed if the bug comes back
zeroblue: I'm pretty sure it's a firmware problem with H7. Before upgrading (G8) I did not have any crashes of any app. The Samsung's firmware just sucks BIG TIME, they fix one bug and introduce another, it's terrible. They could at least test the firmware for a day before releasing it, but it seems that's beyond them.
Hmm,
I have problems accessing the internet via 3G, and it seems I can no longer save APN profiles. I can create and edit them just fine, but pressing "Menu" and then "Save" or "Back" just shows a blank APN list -- nothing is saved.
This was working just fine before I updated to H7.

Is anyone else this?
are you using APNdroid? Something similar happened to me last week, and the problem was that the APN list page was not refreshing (even when I was introducing new APNs). I restarted the phone, and everything was right again.
No, I'm not using APNdroid (had it before the update, but haven't bothered to reinstall it yet).
I can confirm that a restart fixes the problem.
This is a bit unsettling, because it's been restarted numerous times since the update (due to freezes, which happened before and still happen).

good to hear that the problem is fixed that way. I'm not on H7, but on G9, so I wasn't sure it was going to be fixed, but I guess it's not a firmware specific problem, not H7 specific I mean.
isn't the ih7 later of that? in italy i don't have this update.
This is XXIH8 which is newer than H7. I'll try it later this evening and see if I can get it to work. Will probably have to flash to G8 first, but I hope not.
Anyone tried this yet? I downloaded one file, but get an error from Odin. Which option does this file go under?
You'll have to make your own PDA/PHONE .tar files. Extract that archive and shove system, recovery, and kernel into PDA.tar and amss into PHONE.tar, then use Odin as normal. (You can grab the bootloader and .ops file from the older archives.)
To flash this firmware you have to reset all the files in odin and select the ops file from the archive and only select the I7500XXIH8-PDA-CL53973-REV5(VIA).tar file and flash only the I7500XXIH8-PDA-CL53973-REV5(VIA).tar.
I used odin with the "One Package" option selected and selected the single tar file using the "One Package" button.
Didn't do a hard-reset and the phone is working fine. All my data and settings were retained except the APNs, but I was able to add the APNs again and it all seems to be working just fine. The new Switchers app is installed and working.

Note that this will apply the Italian CSC file though!
I took the single .tar file, deleted cache.img from the archive (to remove the Italian CSC), then used the "one package" option. All worked fine.
Make sure that in Settings > About phone > Additional settings > "Mass storage only" is not checked (I think it is checked by default).
Sync doesn't work even when the device does show up.
In fact the only use of the NPS with the i7500 would be to check for firmware updates and perform the update, but I have so far used odin for that (following kam187's instructions).
Also syncing media is slow and I found it quicker to simply copy music and video files manually using Windows explorer and mounting the SD card.

As far as I understand the CSC adds operator branding, but I don't see any branding apart from Samsung Mobile splash screen at start-up. Are there any other differences? Does this definitely use the Italian CSC?

I'm just going from what I learned from the H7 update, really. Kam187 said not to apply the CSC if we didn't want Italian operator settings, etc. The H7 CSC .tar file only contained "cache.img", and this file is also included in the "one package" file for H8, hence why I removed it from mine before applying it.
I believe the CSC is one of the factors that comes in to play with regards to firmware update checking via NPS, and it also might determine which apps are available in the Market.
Kam187 is probably more the expert in this kind of thing, so I'll happily defer to him for a better or more accurate explanation!
hi guys. when i try to update to new sw i get a message that "this device is not supported". it's working properly and it's recognized from windows as a galaxy. did any of you had a similar problem thanks
just did the flash to H8. much snappier. step in the positive direction. the switchers application is a good idea, but its touch sensitivity is crap and it lags hella, however, still its a positive thing that samsung is trying to come up with distinctive apps. I still am unable to download certain apps, (the new Pandora, CTA bustracker pro (chicago, which I purchased when I had my mytouch)) and a few others that I think are US specific apps. I did not remove the cache file however from the installer so theoretically the system might think my phone is german. I doubt that this will make a difference though, if someone else flashes and is able to see and download the above files, please let me know. We shall see if this flash fixes some of the other problems i have been facing: location problems with google maps and messaging centre number resetting spontaneously.
Same thing happened to me when i was first upgrading to H7 but i didn't close down odin instead i turned off the phone and started it again in download mode and did it all over and it worked.
