Default Locale support in firmwares

Hello everyone.

Last month we received the Galaxy in Israel.
It comes with the H5 firmware we full Hebrew support (You can switch to English if you want).

firmware: I7500JHIH5
build: 76XXCSDCBALUM6375
kernel: 2.6.27 smpark@SE-S409 #1

The weird thing is that the Galaxy package doesn't come with the Samsung PC Studio software that allows us to update the phone to new versions which makes me worry about future updates from our carriers or Samsung Israel.

I was wondering if any of you using the latest firmwares could let me know if you can see Hebrew in the "Locale & Text" settings in your Galaxy.

What I'm concerned about is that Israeli owners would be stuck with the H5 firmware indefinitely unless we're willing to lose the Hebrew support...

Thanks for your time.

hey gilad,
i'm also from Israel and i have to say you're lucky. when i got my galaxy it had I7500JIIGC firmware, which is basically G8 firmware that was modified for Cellcom (that's what the C stands for).
After some long talks with Cellcom and Sunny Communications (Samsung provider in Israel) i didn't get a clear answer whether we'll get future updates or not. from those conversations i understood that probably not... i downloaded NPS and tried upgrading the galaxy but it wouldn't recognize the phone - it's a regional problem that occurs in several other countries.
personally, i couldn't stand the low battery time and the frequent reboots, so i updated manually to H7 and then to H8. battery time improved... REALLY IMPROVED. problem is that all firmwares except the Cellcom modified one don't support BIDI and hebrew, so if you upgrade manually you won't have hebrew menus or even hebrew fonts, but the latter can be fixed easily with root access. you can also find a hebrew keyboard on the market, but BIDI is still a problem and numbers aren't shown correctly.

bottom line(s):
1. We can't be sure when and if we'll get a firmware update. My guess is that it depends on how many galaxies are sold in Israel.
2. If you update manually YOU WILL LOSE HEBREW SUPPORT. It can be fixed but only partially.
3. When updating manually you will also lose Navigator software. But you can download Waze instead.

Hi Shay,

I've got mine from Orange, so that explains the firmware difference.

I don't really use the Hebrew menus, so that doesn't really bother me.
you say that there is a working solution for reading / writing in hebrew?

There are some small BIDI issues in the orange firmware as well, can you give me an example of the BIDI problems I'll encounter?

I've also written to Sunny, hopefully I'll get a clear answer after the holidays.

Do you have a guide for installing Hebrew fonts? also, what guide did you use to root your galaxy? I want to root mine as well but I'm afraid of bricking it.

One last thing, Did you get the NPS with your galaxy, or did you download it?

yeah, all you need to do is replace the fonts with fonts that support hebrew, and download Anysoftkeyboard from the market. it's a keyboard that supports hebrew as well as other languages.

The Cellcom version doesn't have BIDI problems, but on my version the dictionary options for keyboard are shown reversed, and numbers aren't shown correctly as well. lets say you want to write the time 21:15, you'll see it 51:12.

good luck with that. when i wrote to Sunny the answer i received was something like "the Israeli version is the newest there is since we got it only recently". i got that answer after H2, H5 and H7 release... Sunny don't really know what they're talking about.

Shalom all,

I have the I5700 (V1.5) from Pelephone for testing. I must say one of the best phones I ever used.

I noticed that Android 2.1 is out tonight for the phone. I want to try and upgrade, but I do need the keep The Hebrew fonts, keyboard and right to left writing (BIDI).

It will be great if we can write a guide for future users how it can be done.

For downloading look here:
