I have done some searching online, and it appears that a number of Samsung Android phones suffer from this problem. Does anyone know what is causing this? Could it be turning itself off because it gets too hot?

Hi kevin. Welcome to Android Forums.
Ironically, my GNex did the same exact thing last night. I hate to recommend this, because you will need to set up your homescreens and stuff, but have you tried doing a factory reset.
PS, are you rooted?
