Froyo 2.2 update fail (yellow exclamation point)
I downloaded the froyo OTA update and got the dreaded yellow "!" in the triangle. I tried booting into Recovery Mode.
When I try to choose "apply sd card :update.zip", I get:
E: failed to open /sdcard /update.zip (No such file or directory) E: signature verification failed Installation aborted
Ideas?
Edit: I don't see it on the sd card (though it finished downloading and prompted me to install) and I can't get it to prompt me to download again.
Oh and if it matters, it was 49.5mb.
EDIT: The answers are all here now. Please read the entire thread before trying to alter your phone, just in case there's useful info you haven't seen yet.

I'm having the same problem and as far as I can tell, the only solution is Sprint replacing your phone. I'm wondering how many Samsung Intercepts just got bricked.
Device(s): Evo4G LTE(Me),
Epic4GTouch (Wife),
Nexus 7, Nook Tablet
All rooted? Of course!!
Carrier: Not Provided

I don't own a Intercept so I'm guessing a bit here, but 49.5mb seems way too small for a complete rom. The Moment, Evo and Epic roms that I'm familiar with are all at least 100mb larger. I'd try downloading the file again.
BTW, Hollywood?
If you can get to recovery? You're not bricked!

Same happened to me....would love to be able to try again (it's acting like nothing ever happened, shows 2.1, and says that my phone is up to date when I try to go to the Update Firmware and Update Android. Anyone figured out how to make it prompt with the update again? I called Sprint and they don't know...say I should bring it to the store to do it manually (which means they have my phone for 2 hours and will be doing a factory reset I bet ). This update doesn't require a factory reset if it comes over the air, right?
I've got a rooted Intercept with a few of the stock apps removed (but backed up to my SD) ... it failed on a logo file of some sort (it was 4 am in the morning, I shouldn't be updating when I'm 1/2 asleep) and then rolled itself back to 2.1. If anyone figures out how to try again, I can perhaps get more detailed information. My update.zip file is now missing as well.
I had the exact same problem..Received message that said phone is ready for update. I pressed OK. It should a picture of a box unpackaging with the andriod character, then I got a screen that showed the droid character with a caution sign (white triangle with exclamation point). Now my phone when i reboot just sits at the Samsung screen and never goes past it. ... Called Sprint Tech Support and they have NO IDEA that the update for the Intercept is being pushed out!

This was exactly what I was afraid would happen when I removed all the crapware.

Did you try restarting in recovery mode? I mentioned how to do it above. That at least got my phone working again.
I have 2 of these intercepts at my house and after getting the first one bricked i just got a message for the 2nd phone to do the update. It said the updated file has been downloaded and verified 49.5 mb. How can i find the file on the phone to upload?

Go into your drawer/tray thingy and look for My Files. See if you see the update.zip. If you do, hook the phone up to your compooter and copy it over.
Don't forget to properly mount and unmount (before unplugging) using the slide down menu-doojobby.
Edit: Could I ask folks to specify, when posting about this problem, to say whether they've rooted/temp rooted or not in the past? I'm still not sure if it's only happening to those of us who went on crapware patrol.

Same problem here, Sounds like its a hit and miss situation. I really dont feel like waiting another month for Sprint to fix this problem. Hopefully someone can figure this out soon.
I have not rooted either phone. Still trying to find the update.zip file. Would it be on the phone or SD Card? I went into My File and now luck, i also us ES Explorer and tried a search but i just keeps running. Any other ideas how to find the .zip file?

I just let mine sit at the yellow exclaimation mark, and eventually it rolled into an error message, and then let me choose to reboot and a few other options. Once rebooted, it was still at 2.1 and works fine. Sorry for the lack of detail, I was 1/2 asleep at 4am when it rolled in.
I've been on the phone with Sprint and Samsumg all morning. I'm up to a level 3 tech at Samsung with the Sprint rep on the line.. any money they are going to send me to a repair center!
I really dont feel like going to a repair center to get this thing switched to 2.2. But whatever has to be done, will get done. Thank you Welliverm for staying on the phone so long to resolve this problem.

I read about a similar issue where the problem was that the update.zip was missing the ".zip" part. It should be on the SD. Could you try mounting your phone (not to be confused with humping it) and see if you have a file on your phone just called "update" with no file extension? If so, try copying it and renaming it on your computer, then try to run it.

Yeah, not to mention those of us who need to cover our tracks that we rooted. Would prefer to solve @ home as well.

Still on the phone Samsung Tech level 3 (waste of time) could do nothing and said i can send it to them and i would have my phone back in 2 weeks. I was like sure thats awesome 2 weeks and no phone!! YOu F'ing crazy! Now Sprint wants to charge me $35 to swap out the phone. This is going to get ugly and i'm about to go off!!

That's messed up. My sprint store replaced the whole upper half of my phone (the non-keyboard half) just cos I had some dust under the screen, and I didn't even have insurance....and had already had it for a couple months.
It looks like it is indeed a 49.5mb file, but I did ask in the thread to be sure.
Awesome.
So I have the zip on my phone, but my own instructions for booting into recovery mode aren't working. Anyone?
I found a different button combo on the developers forum, but the thread starts talking about it bricking your phone unless you jump through all these hoops.....so I'm afraid to try it.
Edit: I tried holding the bottom left and right buttons plus volume down, and that worked. Update still failed cos Sprint Zone is missing.

Sorry for the dp action, but I restored sprint zone with titanium backup, and that didn't work. I'm gonna have to factory reset my phone.
What's the easiest way to make a list of what's on my phone, and/or back it up, to make easier to restore all my apps (or at least app data/bookmarks/etc)? Is there a program for that?
I'd be happy to use titanium backup but I didn't know if it was safe to restore apps from a different OS version to a new OS version.

Use the one in the zip provided by pasta. Don't unzip it, mount your phone and copy the zip from your computer to the root of your sd card. Rebot your phone into recovery mode and click on the update.zip

What??
I've learned that getting rid of anything before 2.2 is installed just causes a huge headache. If you see my post above, I'm gonna have reformat my phone and do a factory reset before I can install it.
Edit: Besides, with the 2.2 speed (and size increases due to App2sd), we may not have to remove anything anymore.

Thank you! I already had the RMA # to send my phone to samsung. I figured I would try this as a last resort and it worked. Downloaded the update.zip, saved it to a microSD, Booted into recovery mode and selected install sdcard/update.zip. I really can't thank you enough.

1. Power down the phone. Press and hold the volume down, send, and end keys. The Samsung start up logo displays. Continue to hold the buttons down until the recovery screen displays.
2. Using the volup/down button, highlight wipe cache partition. Press the center button on the optical joystick to complete the action. The display returns to the Android system recovery screen.
3. Use the optical joystick to highlight wipe data/factory reset. Press the center button on the optical joystick to complete the action.
4. The Wiping cache screen displays. Press the volume up key to continue.
5. download your update.zip from Froyo 2.2 DL05 update for intercept
6. Use the optical joystick to highlight apply sdcard:update.zip. Press the center button on the optical joystick to complete the action.

To be clear, those instructions do not apply if you have rooted/temp-rooted and deleted any of the stock crapware.
It looks like it is indeed a 49.5mb file, but I did ask in the thread to be sure.
After literally ALL DAY messing with it, I just got 2.2 installed, using that link (and the various links that branch off from it). I'll try to write up a clearer guide soon. Right now I'm cradling my brain and massaging my sanity.
Where can I get the azonmp3.apk? I don't want to have to do anything drastic to get my phone to look like when I bought it (as noted in the link above), considering all I did was temp root and remove the amazon application, nascar, and football (I think that's all...I can't even remember now, but the updater is only asking for azonmp3.apk so far).
Well, I think I have amazonmp3.apk (unless it has to be some specific version), but how do I get it to the apps folder? Do I have to try to re-temp-root? I can't remember how as ES explorer says copy failed when I try to manually move it to the apps folder.

Here's my simplified version of the instructions, specifically for folks having problems due to rooting or temp-rooting. Get the downloads from the original links. I just provided the exact file names so there's no doubt that you've downloaded the right things.
Everything after Step 1 is from the link Pastafarian posted here. The instructions from page 4 (for VM users) really helped spell it out for me. I just thought I'd try to write it up a little easier.
1. Backup everything on your phone with My Backup Pro from Market (free version has 30-day trial). Do both apps and data.
2. Go ahead and install the Intercept drivers from the Samsung site here. Also, make sure you already have update.zip at the root of your SD card. Get update.zip here.
3. Download and install SWUpgrade (SamsungMoment_Update.exe) & reboot if requested. Download it here (some versions have been problematic, so I uploaded the one that worked for me). Then install the patch (SDX Samsung Updater Patch.exe). Get the patch here.
4. Then browse to C:\Program Files\Samsung Electronics\SWUpgrade\Models\Binary and delete the SPHM900 file in there. Not doing so may very well perma-brick your phone. Do NOT delete the SamsungPST_SPHM900.dll that is one folder up. I made that mistake and it hung me up for like an hour.
5. Download SPH-M910_MR_DF27_REL_156.tar, which will be your stock update file you'll be flashing with. You can get it from SPH-M910_MR_DF27_REL_156.tar.zip (courtesy of "adamtrott"). Make sure you rename it and remove the .md5 file extension, so it's just "SPH-M910_MR_DF27_REL_156.tar". Copy it to the binary folder.
6. Time to get down to business. Put your phone into download mode (shut down, then hold Vol Down + Camera + End Call) and hook it up to the USB. Start up SWUpgrade, maximize it, & accept the agreement.
Ignore all the onscreen instructions. If you followed these directions, you've already done everything it wants you to do, and you get to just hit "Next" like an angry monkey until it starts flashing the phone, which will bring up a blue loading bar that will roughly correspond with the one on your phone's screen. Wait till it completes (it will pop up a box for you to OK out of). Pow!
7. Final step. Reboot into recovery (Vol Down + Call + End Call), and select "apply sd card :update.zip".
Watch your phone flash (the "Updating Modem" step takes the longest, so don't panic) and enjoy some sweet sweet frozen yogurt! Make sure you always read the ingredients though, and avoid anything with "carmine" in it. That's the mashed up bug asses (and eggs) they use for coloring. True story, bro. Google it.
After you're done, go to the market and redownload MyBackup and restore your apps and settings. Do "check all" but be careful to read any prompts as they come up before blindly clicking. I lost my Angry Birds save, but I really don't give a crap at this point. If I ever decided to temp root again, I can prolly slap it back on with the backup I made from Titanium Backup.
Hope this helps someone!
PS, Big thanks to adamtrott for brainstorming with me on this thing with me for literally 10 hours.

The Following 2 Users Say Thank You to Billkwando For This Useful Post:
Mine was perm-rooted, and it was locking up on verification of playlogo, fortunately the root instructions I followed had backed it up as playlogo-orig, I renamed the orig back to playlogo, and I'm most of the way through "updating modem" ... here's hoping.
Yay, I'm up to 2.2 now, thanks for all the details in the forum, they helped me troubleshoot what was sticking my upgrade. I lost root in the process of course, but I'm sure someone will figure out how to root the 2.2 Intercept in short time. Thanks again!
So my GTALK app isn't in the place it's supposed to be. I re-downloaded the .APK after doing a temp root to remove the bloat, but since I temp-rooted I didn't get the .APK back in the system/apps folder.. I just got it on my phone so I could use the market and not get that silly force close error every 5 seconds.
Will the steps above work for me if I follow them, or am I going to need to do yet another temp root to put GTALK back into the "correct" folder first? I'm downloading the stuff as we speak, but haven't gotten started yet.

My first post/question, btw... Go easy on me. :-)
I'm not sure I fully understand. Couldn't you just put the apk into your download folder (for example), then install it from your file manager? Wouldn't that put it where it belongs? By "the steps above" do you mean the ones to install 2.2 on your phone? Does your phone already have 2.2?
