Confused Help me!

I just got my first Android phone (I'm a BlackBerry crossover), the VM Intercept, about a month ago, and I have been interested in rooting it. I've done my research and I know how to do it with a few different methods, but I don't know which one to use. What are your tried-and-true ways to root your device? What are the must-have ROMS on your phone? Where do you get ROMs from, the Android market or are they all 3rd party? I'm new to this, and I'm asking for help.
