Default mesmerize using mhl

I am starting a contracting job working on tvs and part of their diagnostics routine is to connect a hdmi video source to the rvedly got trouble shooting. I found an hdmi adapter that has a mini b usb input. I have a samsung mesmerize with 2.2 on it can I use this or am I wasting money. This will be for diagnostics only and to keep my tool kit light thanks

I do not believe the Mesmerize has a MHL capable USB port.

No, it does not, from my experience with it.
