Default usb drive

Hey guys am I missing something? How do I make it where the laptop will see the moment? I don't see a place for mounting the sd card, only unmounting?

You mount it from the phone, once phone is connected to PC, you need to pull down the status bar on the phone and click ok to mount the card... or something along those lines

Oh.. hmm... Gremlyn1 You are not getting anything when you plug the phone to the computer? Odd... will look in to this...

I am running windows 7, when I plug in, my Moment shows USB icon in status bar and say "USB connected. Select to copy files to/from your computer." after selecting I am prompted by phone to mount the SD card.

Well this didn't work on two computers (and three OS's), so I figured it had to be the phone. I turned it off, unplugged it from the USB to make sure it had no power still, pulled the battery and re-inserted the SD Card, turned it back on and voila... it works. Not sure if reseating the SD card did anything... but whatever

M900_How Do I Access Content On The Memory Card With The SPH-M900 (Moment)?

At this moment in time, I'm not getting any notification regarding the USB connection, when I connect to my laptop.

I will try

Settings -> Application -> SD.... -> Unmount

Power down the phone and unplug from laptop

Take out the battery and then the SD Card

Re install

Power up

Re connect USB Cable

Ok, that almost worked. Laptop recognized a new hardware (Moment), but could not find driver.

So on my end, it looks to be a problem with Win XP not having the correct driver to recognize Moment. Where do I get it?

Ok, it seems like Samsung has something equivalent to Palm's Desktop....err in this case a PC based mobile phone manager called "PC studio". I downloaded and installed it, but to no avail. It has 6 folders of USB drivers, none of which seems to work with Android.

Maybe usb connectivity will be an upcoming update.

Do you have the USB Debug turned on? If so, turn it off and try it again, that worked for me.

PC studio is for older non-smart phones I believe.

You should try Grymlyn1's advise, unmount the card under settings > Sd card... power down phone, remove battery, remove card, then reassemble and power back and see if that will work.

I got it.

Basically, I've had a multitude of mobile phone drivers installed on my Laptop. From Palm's to Blackberrys. What was happening was that there was a conflict of drivers with the Moment.

I used a program called USBDView to see what these drivers where, and then one-by-one deleted them.

I can now see the Moment's SD card as an external drive, and yes I did get the USB Connected notification on top of the Moment's screen. Wooohooo!

Here is that app for viewing and editing USB drivers on your PC/Laptop....

USBDeview - View all installed/connected USB devices on your system

And yes Adrift, you are right PC Studio is an app for the older Samsung phones. It will be uninstalled shortly. Thanks.

Note: If you succeed in mounting the Moment to your PC, make sure that you "Unmount" it via the notification drop down menu (you drag it down with your finger) when your done.

I found that the PC's driver will get corrupt if you don't (by pulling the cable right off - may corrupt your SD card too, especially if you have a file open), and will not recognize the Moment from then on. To recover....

1. Disconnect USB Cable from Moment
2. "Unmount" the SD card via Settings menu, but do not physically
remove.
3. Power down the Moment by holding down the right hard button (red)
4. Uninstall the driver on your PC. Use USBDview.exe -works exceptionally
well
5. Power up our Moment
6. Reconnect the USB cable
7. Your PC should then re-install the driver
8. USB notification should appear at the top left of your Moment screen
9. Drag down the Notification window with your finger
10. Mount the USB card
11. On your PC, a pop up window should appear with a list of actions.
Choose "Open Folders" (I think that's what it was called).

Well....none of the above solutions worked for me. I tried it at home on my Windows 7 based computer, and at work on my XP based computer. I have searched Samsung's and Sprint's support websites and nothing! I suppose I will have to wait for either of the above to come out with a fix.

On another thread, a user suggested downloading a newer version of PC Studio.

It worked, and adds a slew of new drivers. Plus you can use debug mode under settings -> application to see the SD as a harddrive and also run some other unmentionable software.

Here is the link:

Wow...that was a lot of fun. Finally working.

1. I downloaded the New PC studio software. Long time to run, and install a bunch of drivers (modem, etc) seen in windows device manager.

2. On Moment: settings, applications, development...must check "usb debuging" to enable the PC to see the device. I think I did a full power down also by holding down the end key for 3 seconds.

3. Connect to PC.... and then pull down the notification screen and click on USB connected. All the drivers are set up automatically

4. Now the sd card just shows up as removable device.

Sow what was all that for? Easier to turn off the phone and remove the card and stick it in you pc's card reader!!! There's no functionality in the Studio software (except for update) for the moment. All the syncing of media, contacts, notes, calendars....all say the moment isn't a supported device????? Not such a smart device. Kind of missing Microsoft Activesync now.

So how are we supposed to sync files. I've got a bunch of spreadsheets and word docs and reference stuff that I'd like to have on both phone and moment....syncronized. Any way to setup something that will automatically sync a folder from the pc to the card...when it does show up?

Sticky needed for this stuff pretty soon.

So we have the drivers we NEED. I pulled them out of that huge file and zipped them up into a much smaller file easier to download. These worked for PDAnet and tethering as well Samsung Moment USB Drivers

Kind of reminds me of what I don't like about Linux, everything is too hard, requires too many steps that are not always intuitive, and if you get it wrong you can break it!

Does anyone know what the directory structure should be on the SD card?

I took a test picture, and found that camera had created a DCIM directory with attendant sub-directories, but I don't know what videos or music should be called.

I guess I'll try making a short video and see where it puts that.

OK, it put it in the DCIM>Camera folder, but WMP couldn't play the .3gp file. Quick time could though. Wouldn't you know it! Jobs strikes again! grrr

Ok... I've done everything I can imagine to get my Moment to show up as a drive in Windows XP Sp3....

1) Instaleld "New PC Studio"
2) Removed all USB drivers using USBDeview (I had a WinMo phone before)
3) Rebooted, reset, removed/replaced card/battery
4) Re-detected device, etc... drivers were re-installed

and still no drive letter in windows. It loaded the 'usb mass storage driver' for the device when it was detected, but still no drive letter..

My Device manager shows devices:

ADB Interface:
Samsung Android Composite ADB interface
Disk Drives:
Android UMS Composite USB device
Modems:
SAMSUNG Android USB Modem
PdaNet Modem
Storge volume:
Generic volume (Android)
Universal Serial Bus Contollers:
SAMSUNG Android USB Composite Device
USB Composite Device (Android)
USB Mass Storage Device (Android)

It looks like all the drivers are loaded, but when I enable the "USB Storage" from the notifications I still don't get a drive letter. I've tried USB Debug mode on and off, no difference.

Strange thing is that PDANet installed and runs ok, but I can't access the drive!

I also found this article, pertaining to general USB mass storage devices:

http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/fix-usb-drive-in-xp/

When I went into the disk management my phone shows up, but says it has "No Media".

Any ideas?

I guess you didn't see in my post where I said I installed the New PC Studio, and all it's associated new drivers...

I finally figured it out. Turned out to be a problem that there was a MS Hotfix for...

New drive or mapped network drive not available in Windows Explorer

Fixed the problem.

Don,

Three things....

1. Format the SD card using the Moment, and try again. If this doesn't work...
2. It could be that the Moment has somehow chosen an existing drive
letter. Thus it connects, but does not show as drive in IE. Try this:
Connect your Moment to your PC, and initiate a USB connection.
On your desktop right click on "My Computer". On the drop down list
choose "manage".

A new screen should pop up with a tree. Go down near the bottom of the tree and click on "Disk Management". A huge window should appear on the right showing all the drives connected to your PC. If you recognize the Moment's drive (assuming it shows up), you should be able to change the drive letter. Right click right on the bar graph and a list with the following option should appear "Change Drive Letter and Paths". Choose it, and a few more successive windows should pop up to allow you to change the drive letter. Pick one that is not in use.

Question: Do you use a lot of external drives on this particular PC? At some point the same drive letters get reassigned. And if two devices who use the same drive letter get plugged in at the same time, one will not show.

3. The last option, is to try a different computer. If this works, than some setting on the original PC is not allowing you to see the Moment (if anything it'll be #2 above)

There is a thread around here somewhere that says the only thing PC Studio supports on the Moment is installing the driver and firmware upgrades. Everything else only works on other Samsung phones. So there is no real reason for PC Studio to see the Moment.

BTW, the same thing happens on mine, but my drivers work and I can mount the Moment in USB mode.

Just another thought - the microUSB cable may be defective. I had a cheap cable for my Blackberry that would only connect 60-70% of the time, and when I swapped it out for a better cable the connection rate increased to 100%.

Unhappy Still unable to connect

I've tried everything everyone has suggested.
Unmount
Remove battery
USBDeview
PCStudio

It still will not display a USB icon. It will only charge. This is getting extremely irritating.

Oh my gosh, this forum is helpful. I WILL be participating in it more. I just got my moment today, have had it for about 8 hours. Just tried to plug it in, thought Windows 7 had found another conflict, but no. For me I had to go to menu>settings>applications>development>USB Debug and make sure that was turned off. That you, whoever posted that. I am forever in debt to you, and you have also boosted my confidence in this phone. Was considering taking it back, now I'm gonna keep it till it breaks, then get a replacement. =)

Default USB connect problem moment

No matter what i do, i cant get my moment to connect to my pc. on the first day, it showed up with an exclamation mark. I installed the drivers, new pc studio, pc studio 3 and on and on but nothing works.
I have tried unchecking the USB debugging in settings, but it didnt work. I have installed the drivers, but it wont work. I removed the battery and the sdcard, but didnt do anything at all.
Every time i connect it, my phone starts charging, but it isnt shown on the pc at all, not in device manager either.
I get no usb symbol in the notification area. all my phone does is charge. i tried uninstalling all drivers and reinstalling them several times. I also turned the phone off and on many times as well.
Please do no say "pull down the notification bar and hit connect," i get nothing there.
Any help will be appreciated.

It's possible that is your SD card.

Can you, if possible, put the SD card from the other moment in to yours, and then try to connect to your computer?

i just did a test.
I deleted all the software relating to the phone. restarted comp and phones. i used my phone and plugged it in. it searched for drivers and installed them on its own. then, it wouldnt connect to the phone at all.
I deleted everything again.
Now i plugged in the other moment. This time, it asked me to insert a disk for the drivers, i redirected it to the ones i downloaded from a couple posts above. Now, the computer recognized this phone just fine. i unplugged and replugged it a couple times, and each time it recognized it and allowed me to mount.
when plug in "my phone" after the other one installed all the drivers, it doesnt show up at all.
The main thing is, on "my phone" it wont let me manually search for and install the drivers.
any ideas?

Thank you everyone.
I swapped the sd cards like Adrift said.
i uninstalled everything and allowed my phone to do it.
Everything worked out fine.
chances are if you go to settings and do a manual factory reset, it will probably work. Mine actually gave me errors after i did the reset so there was really a problem with the card.
I just went to microcenter and got an 8 gig for 11 bucks.
That solved the problem.
Finally...

Has anyone else had an issue with getting USB 2.0 speeds when mounting?

Nope, it's pretty fast for me.

Whenever I have issues with the Moment not popping up the USB mount notification, I just reboot the phone with the USB cable still plugged in (it should work either way) and it works fine. Usually, I can mount and unmount after that, but randomly it will stop showing the notification and I have to reboot again.

It still will not display a USB icon. It will only charge. This is getting extremely irritating.

WinXP
WinXP here too.

I read this thread and many others. My ONLY problem was that USB Debugging was turned on in my new Moment. Not sure how or why, but it was. I had installed several apps, so perhaps one of those toggled it.

I went to the Moments > Settings > Applications > Development and unchecked the USB Debugging. Turned the Moment Off, back on, and watched the USB icon pop up on my Moment, and the notification popup asked if I wanted to mount it.

Great!

Deanna,

If you are on with Sprint, then they 'say' you cannot tether your cell to your laptop any longer. Sprint used to offer a connection manager software called SmartView. If you can find that package, that is the software you would need. That... and the modem driver for the Moment, which I am not sure is available.

I faced this exact issue several days ago when I purchased my Moment and renewed my Sprint contract. My wife has a Blackberry Curve, and we used to tether it to her laptop. The Sprint sales person assured me this was not acceptable, and the only way Sprint offfered data services like that on a laptop was via their data program and an 'air card'.

We purchased the Sprint Mi-Fi, which is a stand alone air card that allows up to 5 users to connect their laptop to it via wireless, and get a Sprint 3G/4G connection. We are VERY happy with the MiFi. The most simple setup of any networking product I have ever used.

I should probably test my wifes BB Curve on her laptop, and will if I can find her tether cable... just to prove to myself and perhaps others, that it 'is' in fact as the Sprint folks are saying.

Actually you might find that USB has always worked very well on linux. I plugged in my Magic, mounted as normal on the phone and bam, /media/usb drive available on linux (on modern linux's you get a cartoon icon just like XP). No special drivers or steps required.
XP required a driver but that was pretty painless too, just required an extra step. USB debug shouldn't make any difference but you want that if you're doing other things such as adb, tethering, or rooting etc.

Not sure if anyone has found this:

Is The SPH-M900 (Moment) Compatible With Samsung PC Studio?

"Samsung's PC Studio software will strictly be used as an upgrade tool. Contact management, such as transferring and/or updating phone numbers, e-mail addresses, and calendar events, will not be supported within PC Studio."
