I connect to my wifi a lot mostly because the only time I'm using my phone I'm at home. This started about the 2nd week of owning my moment. It is annoying but I'm not worried about it. I don't see how it is hardware when the phone works fine, if it was hardware than it wouldn't work at all. I'm just waiting till samsung comes out with an update that will address the issue. So I am and I wish others will do the same. Let samsung know! They can fix the problem because they are the ones who made the problem. Tell them whats going on in great detail or as best as you can. Tell them you demand they fix it right away. I have already recommended this phone to a lot of people and friends and now I'm taking it back. Don't get me wrong it's an amazing phone i love it. But if it's not going to work because samsung rushed it than its not worth new people falling in his mess. If it cannot be fixed via update than samsung should fix it and recall the phones and replace them free. It could be costing people money because they cannot make calls or receive important calls. So we all need to come together show samsung this forum and others and tell them whats going on. It is something that NEEDS to be fixed ASAP.
First week phone buzzed along...then I installed 2 apps. Handcent and dolphin. Love them both. But started to notice airplane mode locked on randomly and freezing during calls. My Spidey sense was screaming it was one of the apps. So after 2 weeks uninstalled handcent. No more issues. Phone buzzes like new.
Currently using smspopup to replace handcent, only bummer is can't figure out how to message to a group. Oh well. Gonna give chomp a try. This phone is really great...doesn't need tons of apps...just a little practice.
Hope this helps somebody....if it is indeed the culprit, seems like everyone has this app in this thread.

I have had a similar experience, but I do not use Handcent. In my case the problem seems to be connected to my use of a podcast catcher.
I was noticing that my phone would go into so-called airplane mode fairly often -- at least every other day. And it would happen most frequently overnight. Eventually it occurred to me that the only thing going on at night, at least on a regular basis, was that my podcast application was downloading large audio files. In order to save battery, the podcatcher was set to download only when on AC power -- and the effect of this, most days, was that most downloads would occur overnight, while my phone was plugged in to recharge. Just about every other day, I would wake up to find my phone had gone into airplane mode overnight. When I described this problem to Sprint support, they suggested deleting the podcatcher and I decided to give that a try. Over the next two weeks, I experienced airplane mode only once. Last Friday evening, I reinstalled the podcatcher program. Over the next three days, airplane mode reoccurred three times -- two of those times being overnight.
I really do not think the problem is with the podcatcher itself, which is why I am reluctant to name the program here. Instead, I think the problem is tied to large data transmissions such as podcast downloads. Somehow they are screwing up the CDMA radio and causing it to lock up.
Some have suggested that wifi may be a part of the problem. I can't rule that out, but the lockups for me have occurred both with wifi on and with wifi off.
I plan to delete the podcatcher program today. Just for the hell of it, I intend to install an alternative podcatcher program (probably Google Listen) just for purposes of comparison.
FWIW, my Eris (Verizon) has a similar problem. To conserve battery overnight, I use airplane mode. However sometimes when I shut off airline mode in the morning the "x" remains until I reboot. This happened once a few months ago, and several times recently.
I think it is GPS related on the Eris because until recently I've always turned GPS off unless I need the map. But recently I installed Cardio Trainer that uses GPS to track my workout. Since I'm not accustomed to this app, I keep forgetting to turn off GPS when I'm through with it.
So now I'll resolve not to use airplane mode unless I'm sure GPS is off (if that doesn't solve my problem I'll go after Wi-Fi and the Auto/Home network setting).
At least I haven't seen the phone go into airplane mode on its own.
Bought the phone on Saturday 4/17/10 @ 8:49 PM..
The sales rep pulled them out the box, charged them in the store.. loaded my contacts and stuff from other phone. Got home around 9:45pm..by 10:30pm the phone went into airplane mode. I HADN'T MADE ONE PHONE CALL YET !!! I was just trying to figure out how the damn thing worked..
So after taking 20min to calm down .. i picked the phone back up.. shut it off and rebooted & airplane mode was gone. I made sure the airplane mode was 'OFF' and monitored the phone for about an hour. In the mean time i download a Stopwatch app, a Bible app, and Pandora Radio app.. 20min later it went into Airplane mode. So, i turned on Wi-Fi (to test apps).. and i noticed the Airplane Mode kept going on & off.. So i made sure all apps where closed and shutdown wi-fi and reboted phone.
NOW, i noticed when we got home that our signal strenght was really, really low. So not sure if that had anything to do with it.
** DAY 2 **
Sunday, we leave for church, and the phone had been on the charger all night, turned off.. I turned on the phone while leaving and it was fine for about 2 hourse and then it went into airplane mode, which was okay with that since i was @ church. But, i didn't place it in airplane mode. So i went and made sure wi-fi was off, and no airplane mode for the rest of the day on Sunday
** Today ** I woke up this morning and the phone was in Airplane mode while it was on the charger all night with the power 'ON' and wifi 'ON'..so i shut down wi-fi, reboot phone.. and it's been fine so far today. Then in researching the issue, i came across this thread..i turned 'OFF' GPS only, as mentioned in another post, and i will see how that works, and will keep everyone posted on the different adjustments.
If i can't get this to act right over the next week, i'm going back to the store, and being placed on waiting list for the new HTC EVO.
so is there nothing that can fix this problem? My girlfriend has this phone and it has only happened to her once that i know of. After reading this thread, it seems like she's actually lucky on the frequency of the "airplane mode" attack. Is there any sort of solution?
Folks, this phone is good except for this annoying "Airplane Mode" glitch. For me, I can go days without seeing it except when I go into the Marketplace and start downloading or updating apps. The common theme is whenever chunks of data are being transmitted, the radio goes haywire and locks up. Hopefully the 2.1 update will resolve the issue.
Got the Moment in Late January. Already had CL14, so not huge battery issues. Phone worked really, really well. However, in the last month....major concerns.
1) All Calls went right to voicemail. Even tried calling myself from other phones. Heck, my sprint rep (who's great) couldn't figure it out. It has since been better.
2) Now, I have suddenly caught the airplane bug. Probably 3-4 times daily. Never have WiFi on! Haven't downloaded any new apps since early March. Only have downloaded updates.
This is getting really OLD really FAST! I have been bragging the phone up so much...that one of my bosses who is very important on a National Level bought the phone. Now I am worried the phone has too many issues.
I haven't gone thru the 2.1 threads so much but has anyone checked to see if this "airplane mode" bug still exists with the update? I can easily update my phone with the leaked version but am willing to wait a bit. For my windows mobile HTC Vogue(Sprint Touch), I would try several ROMs in a day, but since the Moment is too new, kinda hesitant.
A week or so ago I had my phone go into airplane mode randomly twice in a day. All of a sudden the bar indicator would turn into the "no signal" icon and when I held the power button, I saw that airplane mode had been enabled. Luckily for me, I was able to disable it both times, and it hasn't happened since then.
For me, the bigger issue has been the phone's data connection ceasing to function, normally when I am using it a fair amount. I can always tell because data things stop working and under the EV icon, only the up arrow lights up, and the down arrow won't (i.e. it's trying to send data but it's not receiving any). This can be fixed by either just waiting and not using the phone or by powering off and back on. Oh, and if I try to make a call while it's doing that, it won't work and it prevents the phone from even turning off, requiring me to pull the battery.
This phone has some serious CDMA issues and I wish I had known about them earlier, when I could have returned it for something else (a Hero perhaps?). I really hope 2.1 fixes them. Otherwise, I don't know... find someone who wants to swap phones? I only got it in February so I have almost a year left before I qualify for any upgrade at all.

2.1 hasn't 100% fixed the airplane mode bug or the CDMA radio/data lock up. It's alleviated it some to where it doesn't happen nearly as often as it did in 1.5 but it's still present and still a work in progress.

You can dismiss the 2.1 leak as beta code all you like. The fact of the matter is that between 1.5 and 2.1 Samsung/Sprint did NOT update the RIL driver for the CDMA chip. There is a chance that they will on the official release but signs are currently pointing towards no. DC23, DD03, and DD10 all had the RIL driver from 1.5 and those were released to the internal test groups.

It's not released, so by its very definition it is beta.

The RIL has far, far less to do with CDMA lockups than buggy radio firmware- the actual code that goes onto the CDMA radio- ever would. No change to the RIL will help you if the CDMA radio firmware sh8ts the bed.
I don't know why folks keep blaming the RIL for this issue anyway. Changes to the interface layer might help alleviate recovery when things to wrong, but the fact that only restarts fix this issue imply that that's not where the issue is.
Had the same problem, tried everything mentioned first, and took it to the service center where it got rebooted and updated with some software that wasn't available via download. Not a happy camper.
I've occasionally had the issue, but today it just keeps happening, over and over... on factory loaded cl14, checked through this thread again now to see if the leaked and modified 2.1 was giving any relief, looks like probably not, so will go back to waiting on the official 2.1

So since my last post 4/19/2010, i had no probelsm with airplane mode. Ever since i turned off GPS and Active Sync and other steps listed in this thread. Then today 5/4/10 after taking a 53 second video on the phone and e-mailing it from my phone. Then turning on Pandora about 2 minutes later, it went into airplane mode, twice. I noticed that the sync circle stayed in the uper task bar longer than normal, then Pandora started playing real choppy. Then the whole phone locked up on me for about 45 seconds, until i received the notification that Pandor lost it's network conntection. Then about 45 seconds later i noticed the phone went into airplane mode by it's self. So in this instance there was a large data transfer, followed by a request to stream large data, then it locked up and went into airplane mode.
I also have had this problem with the Samsung Moment. I am on my 3rd phone now, and all three have randomly enabled airplane mode on their own. Since there is nothing Sprint can do, I contacted Samsung directly. They told me they were not aware of this issue!!! HOW CAN THAT BE? There are so many people online posting this as a problem, how has no one else called them about it? If that is true, I think the best thing we can do is have everyone call in to Samsung directly and tell them we are all having this issue so they feel some pressure to get their techs to work on a solution for this awful glitch in the software! Please people....CALL IN!
I've had my moment for about a month and it has worked fairly well with only a couple of lock ups that forced me to reboot. A couple of days ago the "Airplane Mode" issue surfaced and the phone has been randomly entering Airplane mode ever since with a reboot as the only solution. This is really a drag because it's my business phone. While I'm here other issues that bug me are the USB connectivity or should I say non-connectivity issue. The phone just will not connect to my PC to transfer mp3s to the memory card. Any suggestions here would be appreciated. Overall the phone is cool, the apps are handy, and the call quality is pretty good but the few problems there are are big ones from a user standpoint. What is the news on an OS upgrade?
Funny I have tried to break this phone any way I can, I use my phone all day, have played with cl14, zelfies 14.3, 2.1 and anything else I can get my hands on. I think the airplane mode issue is being caused by something being done to the phone. People think they may know how to handle this beast but probably don't.
I think the airplane mode sufferers may need to go hit up other beginner level forums before posting with other people that know what they are doing. Just my 2 cents.
I have two Moments and have no issues with either one.
I have came across software also on the market that causes force closes and stuff and I remove it and the problem goes away.

After reading this thread I checked and sure enough, WiFi mode was on. Quite possible I turned it on while touch screening settings in bright outdoor light. Anyway, turned it off as I don't need it most of the time and haven't had the problem since. Not to change the subject but do any of you have a sure fire USB connection procedure? Where are you getting USB drivers? Thanks !!

I'm glad that you have no problems with YOUR Moments. however, that doesn't mean that those that do have problems don't know what they're doing. This is a widespread problem. I have seen it happen at the Sprint Store near me and it happens frequently to my wife's Moment. We both knew about this issue before getting our phones. for me it was a deal breaker and that is the reason I got a Hero. My wife insisted on a physical keyboard (although no longer uses it since I got her to try swype) and at the time was willing to deal with the issue.
Maybe once 2.1 comes out (if it ever does) the issue will get resolved. Until then it is a very real issue with the phone and not with the people using them. To say that turning off WIFI will correct the issue, that's nice, unless you have no 3G and piss poor 1x in your area and a nice fast WIFI connection available. After all, the Phone has WIFI capabilities, why should not be able to use it.

Temporary fix (I believe) Samsung Moment with 2.1 and still airplane mode lockup problem.
I'm writing the instructions as if A NEW USER just purchased new Samsung moment phone and has no ideal how to use it. So I am NOT talking down to YOU!
The Temporary fix is to:
0) Unlock the phone.
1) Press the home button on the phone (it looks like a house)
2) Press “Menu” (a new screen pops up from the bottom)
3) Press “Settings” (round button on the right)
4) Find and press the “Accounts & sync”
5) UNCHECK the “Auto-sync” yes this means there will NOT be a green check mark in the box. Hit the home button.
6) If your already in airplane mode reboot the phone, press the end key until you see the power off phone select that and let the phone power down and then power it back up.
7) Ok some items like gmail (the envelope with the red M inside of it) will not work and the same for market. Other items may not as well, you can repeat steps 1-5 and place the check mark back into the box. Do what you need to, then repeat 1-5 and uncheck.
And by turning the auto-sync on again, sometimes so much data comes down it forces it to airplane mode lockup.
Whenever airplane mode is activated the airplane symbol does not come on.
What will happen is the up arrow on EVDO indicator will be stuck in the up position. As if your data is streaming out. The airplane icon will not come on. Attempting to force airplane mode, via end key long press and select, or using menu to select airplane mode will sometimes result in it showing the airplane icon. I have yet found any process killer that will reset the cellular radio.
It will never release airplane mode. I left my phone on over night plugged in with screen set not to sleep and was still forced to reboot the phone. Txt msg or calls out are not happening in this mode.
At the present there only way to resolve the problem is to power off and restart.
What causes the problem?
My initial thought was that it was having the screen off set to 30 sec and having auto-sync turned on. With that setting you will get 30 seconds of any data usage and it will go into airplane mode lockup.
If you set the setting to auto-sync turned off, it takes about a day for it to happen.
And by turning the auto-sync on again, sometimes so much data comes down it forces it to airplane mode lockup.
Ok in the interim let’s get a quick fix. When the phone receives a prl update it resets the cellular radio. SPRINT/SAMSUNG Create an object that embeds the PRL update LOCALLY, This will force a reset on the radio, until you can figure out what causes the problem.
My Moment has had many instances of the airplane mode coming on randomly. I will turn it off and it still remains on! The only way to get it off is to turn the phone off and then on again. Today, it did it again and no matter how many times I turned the phone off/on it would not go off. So, I went to the Sprint store to have them look at it. They went ahead and upgraded the Android system to 2.1 and left with much hope that the problem had been solved. Wrong! It just happened again in the last hour. Soooo frustrating!!
Not sure what to do at this point. Any advice?
been on 2.1 for a month now and it doesn't lock the radio anymore.... well, it does but it automatically recovers now. So that's fine by me.
(occasionally I can hear the airplane mode chime of it dropping off but then it chimes again in 10 seconds when it recovers and reconnects)
so for me I consider it fixed and I'm finally completely happy with my phone.
now if only I could get sprint to stop dragging their ass on getting my business discount applied to my billing.
btw... 2.1 is 100% nicer to use than 1.5. get it immediately if you haven't already

^^^ This. I get the chime on occasion and then a few seconds later it comes back. While it bothers me, it has yet to inhibit any activity. I have had 2.1 for just over a month. The bugs are killing me.. I regret switching from 1.5!
I had handscent and went against what i had heard about double texts and such... but in the last few weeks people have been asking me why I am resending texts from weeks prior. It seems to happen randomly and when I reboot the phone after, say, my battery dies (!).
In the Menu/Advanced area of the WiFi on/off setting, there's an option for the WiFi sleep policy, defaulted to "when screen turns off". I've set mine to never, and no Airport toggling yet... but, it's only been 5 minutes. Hope springs eternal!
Mine did it to me yesterday. First time in a while. I went to my local Sprint store to complain about my GPS not working at all, and told them about the air plane mode, and then later the same day it locked up on me with the screen off, had to pull battery. I should have a new Moment on Tuesday.
I'm sure it will, but the representative their told us again that if you have your phone swapped 3 times you can request a different phone all together. My wife who is on her third looked into it, and they just wanted to give her the Hero and she wants a physical keyboard. The other employee said a lot of the times they will move people to a Palm Pixie or Pre, but their system was only offering her the Hero so she was told to call Sprint to see what they will do.
I'm just trying to deal with this phone till I'm due for an upgrade which is in April which sucks! I'm just gonna keep bugging them and see if I can get them to give me the $150 upgrade instead of the $75 I have now.
I'm trying an experiment. After disconnecting from a wifi network, I'll cycle airplane mode which resets the radio. I've been getting a few lockups a day recently, and haven't found a cause. I'll see how long I can go without a lockup and report back.
I loaded "froyo radioactive 1.8.7" last week, but haven't read anything about this particular ROM increasing the frequency of lockups.
EDIT: didn't work. I might have gotten a couple more wifi sessions out of using this method but eventually the lockup bit down.

My wife got hers two days ago. The only apps we've added are Yahoo Mail and Google Shopper. We definitely haven't done anything out of the ordinary. This issue just happened to her and she couldn't use her phone all day. Right when you go into the settings and turn airplane mode off, it just turns right back on again. Awesome!

Got up this morning and my phone is in Airplane mode. All sorts of other apps and processes keep stopping unexpectedly. I think it has to do with an app I downloaded last night, might be poor coding or a virus. Re-flashin.
Update: I booted to recovery, went to re-flash the radioactive froyo ROM, and hadn't put it on the card, so it didn't work. Booted back to system, and now airplane mode is off and I have service. Huh.

I eliminated airplane mode with the following process:
1- turn off wifi
2- shutdown phone and remove battery
3- replace battery, boot phone, and never turn on wifi again.
I miss wifi but not bad enough to deal with the lockups.
I'm rooted and running Radioative Froyo 1.8.7. No problem for me anymore. Now once in a great while I'll loose connection with Sprint, but a quick reboot fixes that. It's a solution that shouldn't have to be done, but it works.

I am 100% certain that certain installations of apps can cause your phone to have this airplane mode bug. I know this because installing a game made me have it, removing it made it go away.
Is it the only thing that causes the bug? Prob not. But I think it points toward the real cause. So if you get airplane mode stuck on, try removing any recent apps you put on, then try re-installing the OS from recovery. If you're rooted, re-installing the same version doesn't ruin your stuff, it just replaces the system files.
edit: this is probably the least technical and most presumptuous post I've made in a long time.
I found the problem went away completely when I uninstalled advanced task manager, though I wasn't letting ATM run all the time, most of the time I made it terminate itself.
The Following User Says Thank You to kevinrs For This Useful Post:
This started happening to my phone, which I purchased 1 week ago. I might be in a low signal area which is causing the problems, but it is very annoying!!
I noticed this happening maybe a week, week and a half ago. Though, after thinking back it only happened when my battery was low (long work days) in less then great service. My theory was when the signal gets too bad, the phone switches itself to airplane to save battery from continuing searching for signal? (Helllooo run on sentence!)
I was about to start a new thread about this, as I don't really visit this board much, but low and behold as soon as I typed the thread title and moved to the message box, up popped a bunch of threads with similar themes. So here I am, and can clearly see this isn't an isolated problem. My Moment has been upgraded to 2.1 and all of the other firmware updates as well. I don't use any kind of task killer, and I have hardly any third party apps. I use my phone as a phone, not a video game machine so I have no interest in 99.9% of the apps available in the Marketplace.
However just a few days ago for the first time since owning the phone I enabled Wifi, and Airplane mode mysteriously turned on all by itself. I don't have to explain to all of you what Airplane mode does, and why one would not want it to be on if one were not on an airplane. Really freaking annoying! Turning off Wifi in the settings does jack, it just comes back on again. Turning off Wifi and then turning off the phone completely is the only way to really turn off Wifi. With Wifi off, the Airplane mode issue seems to disappear. So does this mean I can't use a feature of the phone I paid for? I am paying every month as part of my bill, Wifi accessibility, and now because of this stupid issue I will be afraid to enable it. How this glitch ever made it past R&D is beyond me, but it was obviously not ready for prime time, and still isn't. No fix to be found on the web, other than just turning the phone on and off again, well that is UNACCEPTABLE!
Between this, the absolutely horrible GPS reception, the lag when switching screens, the extremely poor Web performance, and the ridiculousness of having random apps go off while on the phone (I love it when I'm on a call and my music player turns on, just love it!) I'm hitting up the Sprint store tomorrow to see about getting a new phone. Not another Moment however. I am going to raise hell if they try to give me a new Moment, because the problem is inherent in the phone, not the software. I have been very unhappy with this phone, the physical keyboard being it's major selling point. It's big, bulky, heavy, and the performance sucks, time for a new phone, on Sprint's dime.
I've had my moment for 6 months now, this airplane mode thing has been an on-again, off-again problem, as of late a big problem. It went into airplane mode 4 times yesterday and once this morning already. I'm going to take it in this Monday and let sprint know to fix it or I'm going to cancel my sprint contract. If I can't use the phone, I'm not going to pay for service.
I am soooo angry this is my second epic in 2 weeks the first was stuck on airplane mode while i had it charging! Tooked it back talked to like 6 people from sprint who couldnt figure it out then was told to replace it! I even asked if this was a common occurance and was told no! So silly me got the same type of phone because other than that "freak occurance" i love the phone! But wouldnt u know it not 3 days after i get the new one it does the same damn thing!!! Urgg so sick of this! Loving the new android phones but this is crazy! I think i might b too dumb for my smart phone! What use is it if i can even use my phone as a phone!!!!
Sounds like Samsung has some serious QA problems with phones/software. I will NOT purchase a Samsung again after the problems with the 2 Moments that I had purchased. I am on EVO now and loving it.
