It is Sprint's Picture Service whats causing your mms pictures send and receive smaller,
if you sign up for an acct. online
Here: https://pictures.sprintpcs.com
You can manage your pics and messages (MMS) and also when you save the Pictures from your msgs to your Picture Folders you can save the high reolution or Original resolution pictures to your computer.

Can pics be sent automatic to gmail? or do you have tell people to send pics there?
Ask them to add your email address (gmail) to your contact information and whenever they send you a pic they can use your gmail address and you should get them in a min. or two if you have automatic sync data gmail will let you know

I tried to get them to do this and the rep told me it is not possible to do this. Have you done this yourself? If so what is the exact phrase I should tell them so they can get it done?

Ok... Let's say it this way.
My mom has my phone# on her cellphone She has me on her contact list,
by example like this:
Kbrn
Mobile#
(123)456-7890
Home#
(123)456-7890
email Address myemail@gmail.com_
If she took some pictures and want to send them my way
She'll go to her pictures choose the one she wants to send then add my contact name And scroll to my email address and voila!!
You then should receive a notification as soon as your picture gets there!
good luck!
p.s. Yes I have my contacts to send me pictures to my gmail add.

Got ya, thats what Im up to now. Im just frustrated that on my crappy BB Tour I could get full images, I get a bigger screen and the images shrink unless I get them sent to my email.
Oh well, life will go on. Thanks again

It shouldn't be much trouble and the best part of it is that you can store those pics in your gmail mailbox with endless storage capacity vs. your MMS capacity.
I made a custom folder in gmail and i move the pics from my inbox that I wanna keep to that folder.
Yeah, I had a BB Tour and received 100's of pics no problem from her. If she texts the same pic to my phone (Moment) and my dads phone (Tour) mine gets shrunk and his doesnt.
I noticed this same problem when switching from the original LG Rumor to the Moment. On the Rumor, if i got a pic message, and emailed it to myself on another email account, the pic would be original size from the sender. But now when i do the same from my Moment, the max size I've seen is the 320x240 as specified by the OP. Kinda ridiculous. But thanks to kbrn for the suggestions!
