ohhhhhhh on a call. The screen doesn't turn off for me either, but I think its meant to do that by design, and I dont think that's something they mean to change. you can always use a piece of paper to cover the proximity sensor...
Maybe, but its really aggravating. I make long calls using the headphones that came with the phone and the screen stays on the entire time unless i turn it over or place something on top of it. I switched over from an iPhone and i'm used to the screen cutting off after about a minute on speaker or using headphones, or just hitting the sleep button which on this phone just happens to be the end call button, smart move. I'm thinking of getting a bluetooth but i dont know if that will have the same issue. I feel like there should be a menu option or something available to let people turn it on and off during those kinds of calls without fear of hanging up. I dont like being on the phone for over an hour with the screen on the entire time killing the battery faster than it has to, especially with the battery life issues the phone already has anyway.
I was beginning to wonder if there would ever be an update since the previous Samsung responses used the word "if" concerning an update. This latest response states clearly that an update is coming...
"Samsung does intend to provide updated Android software for the Moment. However, unfortunately, we are unable to provide a time-table and specific details concerning this update."

Good point. Adding it.

oh man samung got a lot of things to fix. i use bt all the time and the screen stays on the whole time. this kills battery life. why couldn't it use the standard timeout settings and let you wake the screen when you touch it or hit a button. this is like basic features here. if 1.6+ fixes this and other problems then we need it now. i'm tired of having a cripple phone even my moto q9c did better then this.

Groups Missing in Moment Gmail Contacts and Call Waiting Drops Call
In Gmail I have my contacts sorted by groups, easy enough, on occasion I need to add a new group or move a contact from one group to another, which is easy enough using a pc and my Gmail account. However, I cannot seem to add new groups or edit existing groups on my Moment. I can see the groups, I can sort by groups, but I cannot find an option that will allow me to add or edit any groups. Does anyone know how this is done on the Moment? I suppose I could use the browser to log on to my Gmail account and change it from there but isn’t that sort of redundant since I am on my Gmail account using the Moment? Also, maybe someone knows when Moment contacts sync with my Gmail why don’t the contact photos sync? One more thing, anyone ever on a call and it goes dead and after a few seconds the phone rings with “unknown” in the caller ID. When answer it is some from my address book that should have appeared in my caller ID… Anyway, now I have to quickly hang up on this person to call the person my phone hung up on to receive this call. It’s like the call waiting gets disengaged and hangs up the present call to allow the new incoming. I also had this problem on a HTC Hero I had before I got the Moment also.
My phone has shut off on me twice already and it wouldn't turn back on. I had to take out the battery for it to restart.
Huh... that just happened to me for the third time earlier this morning. Between that, bad battery life in general and my constant reboots when the battery is low, I'm thinking I might have enough of a case to just get an outright exchange from Best Buy. They're pretty good about that sort of thing, right?

My phone just turned off and had to do a battery pull to get it back on.. of course after i did that my phone went into a boot loop and i had to reflash it with ODIN to fix the problem... If you are using Startup Auditor STOP NOW
Email Notifications Not working and else...anyone know why?
Hi there! Just joined this forum in hopes to solve my current issues. (by the way, LOVE my Droid!!!)
So I hope someone may have a clue on this, under my email settings (for outlook email AND Yahoo email account) I have it set to notify me in the notification bar every time I receive an email AND I have a tone also set to notify me upon receiving emails. I am not getting notified at all when any emails come in! In fact, sometimes I have to refresh my emails (also I do have it set to auto check for emails every 5 minutes but before the most recent update, emails would come through as I got them) and sometimes than they still do not come through.
Second issue I am having is that when some of my emails do come through, I read them and a few minutes later....the "read" emails will all of the sudden become "unread" again.
For my outlook, I do have the little box checked that leaves messages on server (I know if this box is not checked then i could potentially have issues receiving emails)

That and you can't delete more than 1 email at a time! Also, when you delete it from the trash it comes back right away and you have to delete it again in order for it to be gone from the trash permantely.

Sadly this is a problem with the Android email service and I do not know how to fix it.
HOWEVER, the greatest part of Android is the 3rd party app market that makes up for most shortcomings. As such, go download 'K-9 Mail'
It works perfectly on the notification issue. It also allows you (you must check the option) to really delete emails from the email account. And I don't think I have had any issues with the read emails becoming unread again.
Anyways, give it a try. It may not be perfect, but if anything it is at least an upgrade from the basic email service.
The Following User Says Thank You to CriticalCritic For This Useful Post:
I have a problem with K-9. It loads 25 emails at a time. You get a new one, and the last one bumps off the list, so you have 25 including the new one. You read that one, delete it. The app then updates so that it's still holding 25 emails, and in doing so, it goes and re-retrieves that one that got bumped off a minute ago. But now, it marks that one as new/unread. That annoys the crap out of me.

However, I cannot seem to add new groups or edit existing groups on my Moment. I can see the groups, I can sort by groups, but I cannot find an option that will allow me to add or edit any groups. Does anyone know how this is done on the Moment?
I don't know what exactly happened, but I used my USB cable to transfer a small sound clip to my phone, to use as a new sound for notifications on the phone.
After unmounting the SD card, a random MP3 file on my phone started playing (it wasn't the file I just transferred over, it was a random song from the bunch I transferred over last week).
I opened up Advanced Task Killer, and killed everything that was running. The song kept playing. Tapping the end call button just shut the screen off, but the song kept playing, so I was forced to long-press ---> power off the phone, to finally get it to stop.
Doesn't run 3-D games/apps very well. Very chunky and lags the phone out. It WILL run them, but at around 2-5 FPS rendering the phone 100% useless. I've had to take the battery out once on a 3-D game to get it back to working.

lol wow that's odd
Was it the last song that was uploaded to the phone last time you mounted the SD card? If so maybe it didn't finish uploading before you unmounted and something went haywire.

This happened to me a few days ago as well... what's crazy is I opened up my music player to stop it... saw that nothing was playing on there so I started playing a different song, and they both played on top of each other. I don't think I reset the phone, I just waited it out... I think it stopped playing the mystery song about halfway through. Was very very odd.
I had that happen one day. Your phone randomly selected that song for the sd notification. I thought it was a ringdroid issue at first cause some of my others went screwy but it happened when the sd didn't load properly so I haven't been able to repeat the issue. You either had to power it down or wait it out.
This thread has kind of got me worried.... I was planning on getting the Moment in about a week and a half. I thought it was such an amazing device but this thread makes it sound terrible and useless.
Is it still worth getting? Do you think a lot of issues could be fixed when it gets the 2.1 update?
I've also never owned a smartphone before so I probably don't have nearly as high standards as many of you may have. My current phone is the Helio Ocean and I love it, it's just slow and I need something that can multitask and handle more things.
I will say that there are quite a few problems listed that I could most likely deal with.
I don't use my phone as my primary link to the internet so I'd really only use it when I need to check something on the go. I'm more of a texter and an emailer than a talker. I don't care about the camera at all (I have a camera) nor do I care too much about the MP3 player (I have an iPod). I do use GPS quite a bit. I use Google Maps on my current phone to constantly check traffic conditions to see which way I should go to/from work.
Do you think the Moment would be ok for that? I've been in love with the phone for months while I've been looking up new phones for when I switch. It came down to this and Hero but I don't care about Sense UI and I want the faster processor. I also hate the trackball (ball navigation is so early 90's haha).

Ok I'm done. Back on subject now....
I'd say this phone is GREAT for a first time user. I would put the problems mostly under the 'minor' category, save for a few. the phone is plenty fast. Txt and Email handling is great. the keyboard requires just a little getting used to. And if there is something you don't like about it....Search the apps and forums, there's sure to be a fix. best of luck. BTW I have the moment for 5 days now and the wife has a Pixi. both are great, but the app market seals the deal for me.

After reading and reading and reading i got really nervous as well. what's the worst that'll happen? you'll get it, not like it and utilize your free 30 day thing from sprint. but i am damn near positive that won't be the case.
Follow what a lot of recomendations are rather than just reading about people complaining and you'll be fine

Yeah I agree with that. There's always the worry that something significant will happen just after the 30 days haha.
That's why I plan on doing what I did with my current phone. Right when I get it I test everything and test different scenarios. Going from one app to another, sending/receiving different files, opening different files, basically seeing what I can and can't do and what gives the best results. ....then I was wondering, since I'm sure most people do the exact same thing, what if this is exactly why some people see less battery life than others. Powering it up for the first time and working the hell out of it, downloading every app they find interesting at the time. Some people may get the phone and use what they need when they need it. Then there are people (like me, haha) who have a new toy and can't put it down.
Ha, I just looked at my itemized bill online and expanded the government taxes section. I'm getting charged 19 cents for E911.
E911 functionality is mandatory by FCC law... The moment performs to current e911 functionality requirements (E911, as the current law states, is regulated by the cell tower you are on. There is no coordinate location requirements that are mandatory until 2012)
I've had my Moment for about 2-3 weeks now. Overall I love the phone, and do not regret getting it. My bug/fix list would include (in order of annoyance level):
# 1.) Battery application does not accurately reflect charge. My phone goes from 100% to 80% almost immediately after disconnecting from charger. Within 2-3 hours, it hits the dreaded <15% mark. At that point, my phone is good for another 3-15 hours of texting, Pandora, Navigation, phone calls. Perhaps the 15% notification message should come with an audio clip of Star Trek's Scotty saying "I'm giving it all she's got Cap'n, she can't take much more!!!", because at that point, we all know that there was in reality plenty more to give.
#2.) Mandatory screen dim and keyboard backlight shutoff at <15%. Thats a whole lot'a hours (point #1) to be forced into going with a reduced functionality phone... make that nearly non-functional if you are outside 'cause at reduced brightness you will not be able to read the display at all.
#3.) 911 Multi-Autodial. - If you are not having to 'sign on' your phone by drawing a pattern, it's not an issue for you. BUT if you enable phone security, it works like this: Press the CallEnd button to activate phone. Press MENU button to unlock. Did your finger accidentally slide the 1/4 inch to the red "Emergency Call" button that just suddenly appeared? or were you opening the keyboard while you pressed the MENU button (seems to trigger 911 dial as well)? That friendly voice on the other end will be asking you "What is your emergency?" Google it - LOTS of people with this compaint! I had made my first 911 call within an hour of getting the phone. What really annoys me is that there is NO VERIFICATION process before it dials. Give me a keypad to dial 911 or at least ask me if I am sure, but to blindly autodial 911 because your finger slid against this 911 button is plain dumb and ties up 911 services needlessly. Oh yeah, you are given a second chance to autodial 911 if you included the bottom middle 'dot' in your password pattern.
#4.) Device Security - I have disabled the pass-pattern because of 911 autodial and not wanting to make nuisance calls to 911 that I could be charged for. Even if that were not the case, I find the pass-pattern a very bad way to do security. Mathematically, even if you use all 9 dots in your pattern (and had some way to remember what is in essence a random squiggle), there are far fewer possibilities than with even a number only password. Also, Let ME decide how long before the password kicks in (30 min/60 min, etc) and don't force me to enter a password after every time the phone goes to sleep (which could be as little as 30 seconds!) - activating any sort of password EVERY time the phone goes to sleep is a bad security practice that will get most people to just diasble security altogether! Let me TYPE a passphrase into the phone that is secure AND easy to remember.
#5.) Bluetooth bugs. These are acknowledged by Sprint and allegedly being worked on. In the case of my 2010 Prius, The phone sometimes decided to connect, and sometimes decides that it is not on speaking terms with my car. Oh, and the BT speech recognition feature stopped working after I applied the Sprint Patches to my phone. All the wonderful reasons why BT made my phone safer to use while driving are canceled out if I have to fiddle with my phone to get Bluetooth working again. "Honest officer! I wasn't texting - I was just trying to get Bluetooth to work so I could use my phone SAFELY!"
I am hoping that Battery Conditioning will at least help the battery app correctly identify remaining charge. I have also been very vocal about posting these issues on sprint/samsung sites. I still like my moment, and am hopeful that these issues get addressed. In particular, I would never want to be dependent on my Moment in any situation where I am more than a few hours away from a charger.

Reason: typos
Something that is annoying me and maybe it's just me;
When I have the phone laying flat on a desk and go to pick it up the screen shuts off for a second or two and then comes back on, which is normally the second or two that I'm trying to press the answer button.
For a bit I was having the exact opposite issue as taintedblue and my screen was shutting off every 15 seconds during a call, which made navigating through a touch tone menu very annoying.
I'm pretty sure both issues have to with the proximity sensor.
I'm starting to have random problems with my Moment. Today, the head phone jack just completely pooped out. I will have to take it in to the Sprint store for them to look at it.

If your phone is pooping, I think you might have other problems with it than just a headphone jack. Sorry, couldn't resist that one.
You mean the flap over it or the whole thing? I use mine a lot so I'd be interested in what Sprint says about it. Guess I should keep an eye on mine.

LOL
No, it was the actual jack itself. When I plugged my headphones in, they wouldn't work. I thought it was the headphones that were broken, so I plugged them into something else and they worked. I tried another set of headphones on my phone and those wouldn't work either. I was really bummed, then I decided to try and wiggle the headphone jack connector inside a little bit and something happened because it started working again! Haven't had it go out again since, but we'll see how long my fix lasts.
Can someone tell me which of the issues have been fixed with the official CL14 update (Not Zefies), so I can keep the list current?
aGPS is working, although better for some than others. Portrait/landscape and keyboard lag is markedly improved, accidental emergency dial is resolved, battery meter is much more accurate and battery life is noticeably better. There may be others too.
My very first evening with the phone, it turned airplane mode on however when I went to settings, it claimed that airplane mode was off, so there was no way to turn it off! I took out the battery and didn't play with the phone until the next night, and when I turned it back on, the airplane mode was really off. I was pretty upset, but it hasn't happened again. I also experience all the other issues listed in the front post.
I have a new one to add though, but I'm not sure if it's because I'm using the phone improperly, so maybe someone can tell me the right way to do this. Sprint told me that the way to keyguard the phone was to use the end button. My husband tells me that it ONLY puts the phone in sleep mode, which is why I'm not receiving any notifications for texts or anything else until I turn the "keyguard/sleep mode" off.

I push End when i finish using my phone every time, and it prolongs battery life, but I also still get texts, tweets, emails, and weather updates. So, maybe you have another setting that's keeping you from being able to do that.
I'm new to the forums so please forgive me if this has already been answered elsewhere but the problem I've been having for only the past two days or so is applications starting up without any prompting from me. I installed Advance Task Killer Free a week or so ago and over the last few days when I've used it it says I'm using nearly every application on the phone even if all I've done is message or checked email since I last killed every ap. As a result, of aps starting up without my knowledge my battery life has been draining quickly. Any thoughts or suggestions?

I went to the Sprint store 2X to get the update. I believe I have it.
My settings show:
Firmware version 1.5
Baseband version: S:M900.8.0S.CL14
Build number: CUPCAKE.CL14
I'm not sure what's up with that Cupcake name, but the baseband and build information references CL14, so I assume that's the CL-14 update.
I use the pattern lock and I still have that Red Cross style emergency call button right near easy access. I didn't want to test it by 'accidentally' hitting it to see if it will call 9-11. Is this indicative that I have that fixed?

I'm having a similar issue with my phone; however my Airplane Mode seems to turn ITSELF on. I went to bed last night with it running 3 apps and running normally, and woke up with Airplane Mode on; yet still receiving texts, e-mails etc. but with no signal and an 'X' over the bars. It read Airplane Mode as ON, but when I turned it OFF nothing happened. I had to restart the phone to get it back to normal.
This has happened twice now since I've had the phone, and at random. No idea...

If you press the E call button, it pops up a dialer as opposed to autocalling 911.
I'm amazed that when I bought my old Samsung Instinct it came with a spare battery and a charger, but the Moment does not. Battery life on this thing is a joke. A couple hours data usage and it is dead.
Had the same problem... Original battery life sucks in Moment... But I just downloaded Screebl an application that works in the background to save battery life.. You can get the free version of it if you prefer...
If you press the E call button, it pops up a dialer as opposed to autocalling 911.
I called 911 the other day but had to: unlock phone, go to contacts, elicit the screen typing board and call... It wasted me about 3 mins in the process... Is there an icon that you can place in the desktop?
Going to repeat one more time THERE IS A DAMN GOOD CHANCE (pretty sure actually) it will NEVER be OTA...
If it does, it wont be cl14 anymore because cl14 includes a new SBL to be flashed into the BML2 partition and a Recovery Kernel to be flashed into the BML8 partition... Those partitions are READ ONLY except in odin flashing mode, so even if they could get the phone to update via OTA (which they would never do without a proper recovery console which is part of the cl14 update) they couldn't write to the bml2 and bml8 partition because as far as we can tell (and we have been looking for a way) there is no way to force those partitions writable EXCEPT FOR ODIN... So even if they could get the data to download on the phone, they have no way to get it into that partition... Furthermore, a bad SBL flash (which can happen) will render the phone 100% inoperable unless you remove the rom chip and manually write to it (meaning they have to replace the phone)...
The reason Zefie's kernel doesn't need the cl14 sbl is because we don't put a recovery kernel in bml8 (that is where all the goodies are stored like busybox)..
