Exclamation Notification: "Low on space Phone storage space is getting low"

Had my Samsung Moment for about a month. LOVE IT. Few issues (same as everyone else has noticed), but nothing terrible. Until:

Randomly today TWO Notifications popped up that said "Low on space Phone storage space is getting low." One was what seemed to be from the "hardware" and the other was from the "Work Mail" app (which I don't use, haven't used, haven't even opened). When I click it, it takes me to the Manager screen. So, I began uninstalling some apps I don't really use (I didn't have that many anyway...a couple of games [Solitaire, etc], Facebook, Notes). It started running really slowly and random Force Close messages would appear for things like android.process, messaging--things that have never Force Closed before.
I turned it off (pressed and held the red button), waited a few seconds, then turned it back on again. Immediately after the "Sprint" logo lights show finished, I got another Force Close message. When the Home Screen showed up, I had the two notifications again "Low on space". When I cleared the notifications, only the "Work Mail" one would clear.
I went through and deleted some more apps that I don't use. Got on my computer & Googled the issue. Found a couple of random forums that suggested cleaning out the Cache in the Browser. I did that. Cleaned the History & Cookies in the Browser, too. Then, I did a soft reset (took out the battery). Started it up again, SAME notifications. Less Force Close messages. But, it's running VERY slowly.
After a few hours, I noticed that I hadn't received any text messages or Gmail notifications. I had my sister text me about 2 hours ago. Still have not received it.
I really don't want to hard reset. I haven't synced my contacts (I have over 400 & the Sprint store had trouble moving them from my Centro to the Moment) to Google yet, nor have I hooked my Moment up to my Mac yet (the Sprint guys had no idea if it would work or not with Snow Leopard & I hadn't had time to check yet) and I'm worried to try it now that my Moment has gone crazy...I really don't want to lose 400 contacts.

I don't download a lot of apps. Most are reputable (Pandora, MotherTED, Shazam, Movies, Jewels). The last one I remember downloading was Google Voice three days ago (which I haven't really used because I've had the flu). I don't know if this is a Malware/Virus issue or if I'm just an idiot & did something wrong. But, it's running REALLY slowly right now. Still not receiving texts or emails (though my Twitter app has notified me of a couple of @ replies).

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm going to call Sprint & Samsung tomorrow, then go to a Sprint tech store if they can't help. But, I'm just hoping one of you have come across this & can help before I have to deal with hours of hold music & techies who tell me to soft reset over & over again.

BTW:
After awhile, I finally checked the storage space:
External SD care: Total: 1.89; Available: 1.85
Internal: About 2 hours ago when I first checked, after I had deleted a bunch of apps it said I had 7.something MB, now (after not downloading ANYTHING or barely even TOUCHING the damn thing) it says 1.95MB. Which leads me to believe that the 7.whatever was not necessarily accurate...

Much appreciated.
(I looked through as much of the Forum as possible to ensure that I wasn't double posting [& came across a lot of new & helpful info about other stuff]. Sorry if I did.)

Are you using an app manager to close apps that run in the background?

No app managers. After reading around on this forum, I started looking for "Advanced App Manager", but the Market Force Closed on me... =(

I'm sorry to say that I scanned thru the post without reading the whole thing so if u said this then I apologize for askin, but have u, since getting the Moment, reset it? U may wanna go ahead & do so; its actually a good thing to do anyway after getting 1 so this may be a good time... If u do so, just for precautionary measures, take out ur SD card...

I had a similar issue due to core dumps. Unfortunately the fix is not a simple one. There's a directory, /data/tombstones, where dumps are stored. I had a 200MB one in there from the HTC keyboard. I'm not sure how these are managed, but deleting it fixed my issue. You might need root, I don't remember what the permissions were.

If you want to check this, see what this does for you:

Install connectbot from the market (if you have enough space to do so.)
Run it and connect to the local session.
Type (without the quotes: )

"cd /data/tombstones"
"ls -l"

Do you see any files in there and what size are they? Also note the first three columns, what user owns the files and what permissions do they have?

So you've had it for a month, had problems moving your contacts (400 of them yet) And you haven't done the simple task of syncing to GMail to preserve your contacts?

you probally should clear your browser cache and your market cache and also delete browser history and cookies you have in the browser also i would look around for any other apps were the cache builds up alot that will probably save alot of space

Your probably going to think I'm really dumb but how do I do this? I just can't seem to find where to do it on my phone. Thank you! (I'm not really that dumb!)

settings>applications>manage applications then once you do that go down to the app you want to clear its cache open the app on that list you want to clear the cache of and press clear cache and there you go

the apps that build the cache the most are the market and browser others aren't that bad ive noticed but it depends on what apps you have, with the market even if it says the cache only says 500kb it seems to clear more like 2 or 3 mb for me

I have 450 phone contacts & 400 gmail contacts. Syncing would cause over 800 contacts & a good few hours worth of merging them on gmail. Just haven't had the time.
Tried to sync yesterday & it wouldn't do anything anyway.
But, I do appreciate the snarky comment. ;-)

Was on the phone with level 1, 2 & 3 techs from Samsung for a good hour yesterday. They've never heard of my problem. Nice people. Tried to help, especially the level 2 & 3 techs. By the time I got to the level 3 tech (& had deleted every app & cleared all caches...which brought by internal storage to a whopping 19mb), we were just trying to sync my contacts so I could do a hard reset. He actually had to research some stuff & called me back. Definitely helpful. But, unfortunately, didn't do any good. So, I'm going to try the Sprint store to see if they can dl my contacts before we do a hard reset or, more likely, just see if they'll replace the device as I'm worried there's a defect in this one as it seems to be a relatively unknown issue.

Thanks for suggestions!

Now this really sounds like a tombstone issue to me. Did you get a chance to try the test I posted earlier?

The tombstone was my problem, I had a 200 MB file in there. I had to root the phone to delete, though. There may be an easier way, but permissions were off. This seems like a poor implementation if crashed programs can permanently core dump in an inaccessible area. Is this really intended?

As I suspect, most Samsung Moment users are not really that savvy when it comes to smart phones.

The OP had a Palm Centro, and needed the Sprint store to move the contacts over...

I just used my Palm Desktop, exported everything to a .csv file, did a quick edit, and imported into my gmail. Simple and easy. But of course that's far too convenient than relying on the Sprint store to do it.

I am having a similar issue on my Hero. Something I did or downloaded was eating my internal phone storage memory as fast as I could clear it. I backed up my data and did a factory reset, but I'm still having some issues: major lag, vacant address sms errors, etc.

Any ideas as to what could have caused it or what could still be causing problems after a hard reset?

I dl connectbot and would like to check the tombstone as was suggested above, but haven't used any shell programs before and couldn't figure out how to connect to the local server (I changed from "ssh" to "local" but didn't know what to enter for the "nickname")
Thanks!

Yup it has been confirmed for sure.. 100% tombstone fault..

It is either caused by handcent and Hero VK...
I am positive Hero VK has been leaving a lot of tombstone files, but not sure if the 200 mb one i cleared from my friends moment was related to HERO VK or not

I just started using Handcent within the last couple of months so that makes sense...can you explain how to clear them please?

I have 10 files in the tombstone directory:
tombstone_00
tombstone_01
tombstone_02
... (etc.)
tombstone_09

they all say:
-rw------- system system (file's size) (date and time) (filename)

if the file size is in bytes, then all mine are 50-70 kb. I have the Hero VK and use it sometimes. Did the one you fixed have a filename other than those I listed above?
Thanks

No tombstones are always listed that way... yours aren't big then (700kb max) so it isn't a problem.. the ones i got off my friends had 6 files.. one of them was a 200 mb file...

None of the files that show up on mine are labeled tombstone. Am I missing something?

Ok, good to know. I'll keep an eye on this list if the phone gets overly sluggish.

try this first... go to menu > settings > applications > manage applications

go through your applications and see if there's one that is larger than normal (>4MB) - clear cache. check the market and browser, cuz those are notorious for hogging up.

then try getting connectbot. the tombstones are located under

/data/tombstones

but you need permission to view...

Same problem here. Got my first notice of 'low on space' and 'not enough internal storage space' so I deleted a bunch of apps, and rebooted several times. Messages continue to be rejected, but the phone operates all right at this point - except that I can't download any applications from the market. Hence, I can't download Connectbot.

I went through all applications and cleared all cache, including the browser and market app. I do have Handsent and started using the Hero VK about 2-3 weeks ago. Both have worked just fine. But now I can't shake/remove those notifications I mentioned, and no access to the Market.

Any suggestions? I really don't want to wipe out my device. Sounds like these 'tombstones' might be the issue.

are your phones rooted to be able to access those files?

1) you can download it here on your PC or from your phone: connectbot - Project Hosting on Google Code
2) using a file manager (i use appmanager or astro) - install it

and you should be able to access the folder.

Thanks -- am now in the program and am looking at the list of tombstone files.

I see one whopper of a file dated last night, right when my phone started receiving the notifications.

What's next? How do I delete that one? Should I delete them all?

I have ASTRO -- can I use it to delete that huge tombstone file? I've tried searching through ASTRO for that file (tombstone_01), but can't find it.

Any help would be great appreciated. Do I need to root the phone to delete, for sure?

yeah already did that. didn't clear much. she went on a mass app deletion spree. didn't fix anything. plus phone want syncing with google cause it was so messed up. she got tired of it and hit the restore to factory button. when phone rebooted I forced a google sync and all her contacts came back and the phones memory is back. so she's half way happy now. loading apps back is what she's upset about now. thanks for the response though

I have ASTRO -- can I use it to delete that huge tombstone file? I've tried searching through ASTRO for that file (tombstone_01), but can't find it.

Any help would be great appreciated. Do I need to root the phone to delete, for sure?
i'm not sure if you'll have access to it... but it sounds like you can see the folder, so you can probably get rid of them... but here's what i did using connectbot...

type in "su" to see if you can change the "$" to a "#"
then type in "rm tombstone_01" or whatever the file name is... be careful to make sure you're just getting rid of the tombstones.

i know it happens when the virtual keyboard crashes...

Hi:

I have:
--rw--system system 1584 2010-02-04 19:36 tombstone_00

I tried typing in "su" to change the permissions but it replied:
su: not found.

Any other suggestions on how I can get of this tombstone file?

Thanks,

Tom

Each application has specific amount of memory set aside on the ROM. If an application begins to come close to this limit you will start to see the low memory warning.

To permanently resolve this issue, move apps to the SD Card instead of phone. The key is how to do it without using apps such as Apps2SD which require rooting your Android phone. You do not want to potentially void the warranty on your phone now. Found this detailed article on how to do this.

Been banging my head at it for almost two months now. Finally resolved my issue

Sorry for the bump, but I'm having the same problem with my LG Vortex. I download the Connectbot and saw the Tombstone files. However, how do I delete them?

When I did "cd -l data/tombstones" and then "ls -l" , I got nothing. Is that correct or is it because I my phone is not rooted? I could not "ls -l" the /data directory.

I am using the Moment with 2.1 update 1. I have cleared all the app caches, history, cookies, browser cache etc. Where else should I look?

If I have Adroid 2.1, can I do the Move App to Sd fix described above and at this link: Resolve Phone Storage Space is Getting Low on Android Phones | AskStudent

Can this fix also be used to access the tombstones?

the apps that build the cache the most are the market and browser others aren't that bad ive noticed but it depends on what apps you have, with the market even if it says the cache only says 500kb it seems to clear more like 2 or 3 mb for me
I am having similar issues with the "Low Space" message. I did as you suggested, but my browser and market do not give me the option to clear cache. I'm at a loss. Text messages are being rejected and I can't make phone calls or do anything else due to this issue. Any help would be great!
