so, if I'm moving to Sprint, by God, I'm going to get something SLIGHTLY better than the Pantech Ocean i've been rocking 2+ years. obviously, the idea of an android device has been on my mind for quite sometime, and since I'm never ever going to own a phone that DOESNT* have physical QWERTY keyboard, it would appear rather rapidly that the Moment would be my choice (especially since I get $50 on top of that current $99 price point, so yes, a $49 dollar 800 mhz android QWERTY smartphone interests the HELL out of me)
here's where it gets tough. that * was a placemarker for one phone and one phone only: the HTC Supersonic. I just dont know if its worth my time to hold out to May because I really hate this Ocean now. Clearly, the Supersonic is pretty much as tangible as the smoke monster from LOST at this point, but still: 1ghz snapdragon, WiMax......... ugh
now here's my big second question and I might be asking it in the wrong area since it has to deal with root and re-flashing, but i think i'll ask anyway:
Say I get the Moment in a month or so. I've seen that the phone which can be rooted, which then begs my immediate next question: can I put 2.1/Sense UI on it?
i know I've read reports that 2.1 is supposed to be coming to the Moment early in Q2, but I'm just trying to get answers in case it gets massively delayed (lol like the Driod 2.1 update)
anyway, hope to be posting alot more on the forums here real soon with my 1st Green Machine
There's an attempt to get 2.x on the phone over at SDX, but I'm not aware of any useful success. I've also never seen a working port of SenseUI though you can get part of the way there with available apps in the marketplace. Considering your post, I'd suggest waiting till 2.1 is released less you end up very disappointed.

It's worth it. Totally and utterly worth it. With the custom kernels and everything else you can do with this thing, it makes the Ocean line look like one of the old 80s cell phones. This thing FLIES.
I can't say much about Sense UI (never cared to play with it) but our phones will be getting the Android 2.1 update soon.
I say take the plunge. The full keyboard was a must for me.

Or...take it now; learn all you can about the phone and rooting and then, when 2.1 hits, your learning curve is lessened and you have more time actually playing with the new apps with a phone you've already customized the way you wanted. ;o)
SDX had the CL14 release out to everyone a few days beforehand and they've done awesome work with the 2.x line of code. If you wanted to, you could even install a mostly working 2.0.x OS on your phone...if you had one now.
Of course, waiting's, good, too. Maybe they'll release the HD version of the moment by then and you can watch TV over the air with your phone. I'll be buying that one for myself and giving this one to my daughter.

Although 2 things i like better on the ocean than the moment is the ease of calling someone on the ocean. You have to press 4+ buttons just to call someone on the moment which can get annoying in a hurry. The other thing i liked better on the ocean was the notification light when u had a missed text/call. You can download an app called flashnotify fromt he market but that lights up the whole screen rather than just the bottom buttons.
Although Helio ran off of Sprints network i get much better service with the moment than i did on the Ocean and the call quality is great.

Um...well, uh...it was prettier. Oh, and it came with a standard 3.5" plug. That's....well, pretty much it. heh.
At least as far as I used it anyway. I also didn't like that they took the fast forward, stop and rewind buttons away.
came back to post something else that was bugging me yesterday. is the 800 mhz going on here really that quick? I guess since I've been stuck on something that i dont even know its guts, that my reference point to phone processor speed is next to nill. and if it isnt as fast as, say, a Droid, are there overclocking options available to the Moment?

Thing is the stock android browser on the moment is amazing opera mini 5 (witch i do have and do enjoy) is nice but its not actually needed with such a nice web kit browser already stock with the phone. I never used the browser on my blackberry because of how much it sucked now that i got the moment the stock browser is amazing its almost as nice as using a computer browser. If i was you id look on youtube at some videos of android phones and some neat stuff they do.

ok this is a great post, because it does centralize my idea of the speed of the phone, BUT:

As to our processor being what was in the original iPhone... I think the original iPhone used a Cortex-A4, not an ARM11. The proprietary OS on it is also really quite watered down, allowing less CPU use, I feel. All the functionality the iPhone has, is completely due to applications. There is no real use of the OS other than as a surface to run off of, at least to my knowledge. So, no ours will feel a little slower than the iPhone.

Apple will always have a fighting chance as long as they are the only company making the obvious choices. Look, Windows Mobile devices made back in 2002 have always been able to do 75% of the things that the new IPhones rave about in their commercials! It is so frustrating to watch an IPhone commercial explain to people that these devices now have apps available and can browse the web while you chat on the phone...lol.
If Microsoft could have written a half decent interface and launched some decent commercials back in 2002 then the Windows Mobile scene would have made the IPhone launch seem like childs play.
Amazing how a different slant on the same technology can make or break a company.

Lets get one thing straight. The ONE AND ONLY REASON APPLE IS STILL AROUND, IS B/C MICROSOFT GAVE APPLE A BOATLOAD OF MONEY TO STAY IN BUSINESS. Without that cash infusion, they would have gone belly up a decade ago. They are following that same path with iPhone. Same business model that sunk them back then, will sink them now. Why did Microsoft give them money? Easy. To avoid anti-trust lawsuits. Now with the emergence of google chromium, the growing popularity of Ubuntu and other distros, Apple won't have anyone to bail them out 5/10 years down the road.

I thought the Hero was running a 512 ARM11, Droid: ~700? Cortex, and Moment: 800 ARM11.
Meaning, I thought the Droid has a slower clock speed but superior architecture that brings it to close to identical (maybe slightly superior) power as the Moment.... I didn't think that it was "a lot faster" than ours?
Edit: I just found out that the Droid is 600, though it's stock underclocked to 550. So it should be on par with the Moment, if not a little slower.

The way it's processor handles processes is MUCH better than as is ours. The newer architecture does a hell of a let more than one would think. Even though it IS clocked at 550 stock, that 550 is much faster than ours. When it's OC'd to the 1gh/z or 1.2 that some people have it at, the processors really show it's true colors. All around, the Droid is a MUCH newer (hardware and software) phone when compared to ours.
