Default U.S. Samsung Galaxy S2 event on August 29!

Finally something encouraging: Samsung's whipping up something Aug. 29 - looks like the Galaxy S II | Android Central

Personally, I will probably get whatever comes out first of the Galaxy S2 or the Bionic. But after seeing pics of the Bionic, it looks like an absolute brick, and the S2 is just so sleak and sexy. I really hope they announce the Verizon S2 at this thing and that the release will be within a couple of weeks after the announcement.

I think this has to be the drop dead date for people deciding between the Bionic and the SGS2..

So freaking late... I think I might wait for the Prime... we won't get it until at least mid September... Thanks to the idiotic US carriers.

It is like the bionic too late. If it weren't for rumors of upcoming devices in Oct id get it but not now unless they uped the specs.

If it's 4.5" of Super AMOLED+ with LTE, I'm getting it.

I just can't take this much longer.

Hopefully they will end a lot of speculations on it in good way! They must throw in one of new Sammy beasts from leaked list yesterday. Single core slider 4G won't cut it.

I agree it will be good to finally get the SGS2 details. Although need to be prepared for them saying SGS2 won't be coming to Verizon. I have mixed feelings about this, because while that would be a bummer, if Samsung is making the Prime, them skipping verizon for SGS2 might be setting us up to get the Prime for sure. I would take that trade. Droid Nexus Prime? Sounds AWESOME.

Hmm, that won't be too bad. If they assure us that Verizon is getting Nexus Prime instead in Q4...

Exactly. We need some freaking assurances.

If it's "Oh, well, we have something down the pipeline for Verizon, don't worry," I'm going Bionic and finally being able to be done with it.

Stratosphere on 09/08 is going to be single core 4G slider
Illusion on 09/29 is going to be the Galaxy S2

I think the timing just works out that way, the Illusion is a month after this August 29th announcement..

No way it comes out a week after the announcement on the same day as the Bionic, I can't see how that's a good idea for anyone..

Has anyone noticed that the Samsung Event will be held at The Shops at Columbus Circle, on the Third Floor at a store called The Samsung Experience?

It's a big mall in New York.

Does anyone live anywhere near there? I can't imagine they can keep it completely free of the general public plastering their faces at the windows, being in a freaking mall on a weekday at 6pm.

Have no idea what their source is, or even if they have one. May be a traffic magnet, but I thought I'd throw it out there:

Seems like the OG Galaxy S2 spec list, but they added in an LTE row. Notice how they forgot the standby and talk times for 4G at the bottom. You'd think they would have that in the real specs if they talk of 4G.

The CPU listed is the same Exynos that's overseas, nothing changed there, although we've seen leaks with other processors like a Snapdragon and such.

As per normal, time will tell.

Yeah, I noted that too. Seems a little suspicious, but I love the "Candybar" description if it's real. Take it on board for what you think it's worth.

I also thought this looks suspicious. Especially the Exynos processor part. Then I came across this news and maybe Sammy might surprise us with Exynos in all US SGSII? This is Hercules heading to Canadian TELUS but that kind of performance is not territory of 1.2Ghz dual snapdragon...

That's kind of quadrant score that SGSII has been getting in most reviews since its first launch oversea. 1.2Ghz dual snapdragon would do about 2200~2400 on quadrant (Sensation, Evo 3D). This makes me wonder Exynos might end up in all US SGSII after all.

If Verizon SGSII gets Exynos plus LTE, that would be like dream comes true. But I guess chance of that is slim. I think it would be either Exynos with 3G or dual snapdragon with 4G.

I'm just back from my family vacation to Sequoia park. Wow, many big news happened this week like Google buying Motorola and some more info on US SGS2. Hope Google doesn't dump their other phone partners as I don't think they can be like Apple. They can't afford to lose Samsung, HTC, LG in my opinion.

I would also love to have Exynos processor in SGS2 phone but 1.5GHz dual core snapdragon would work for me as well.

I don't know, folks, but I'm getting a sinking feeling in my gut that the Verizon version of the SGS2 will end up being a slider. The only slider among the Big 4. I have another 11 days to hold out hope that I'm wrong and the slider is the mid-range Strat, but still there's that techno-intuition that speaks otherwise...

I guess we'll see.

Yeah, now we only have about ten days to keep speculating on it...

BTW, there is a guy over at Attain forum who claims to have gotten hands on test Attain device recently. According to him, all four SGS2 will be slim non-slider dual core devices and slider will be mid-range device, but he couldn't confirm there will be LTE SGS2 for verizon or not. Not sure if he is for real or not. But who knows, YodaDroid on Bionic turned out be real after all.

I'd be OK with a slider SGSII. I don't know what to believe anymore. We've been pushed so many directions since spring and they've all been wrong. August 29th couldn't come soon enough. I would only settle for the Bionic if the bootloader is unlockable whether it's unlocked by Motorola or Atrix/Photon style.

Since it looks like the Nexus Prime is coming out early October, I'm not sure if it would be better to just wait an extra month and just skip the SGSII.

Remember who you're talking about. No chance Verizon drops a GSII-based phone in September, then turns around and offers the Nexus Prime a month early. Maybe in time for the Christmas shopping season, but not October.

A site called "TechnoBuffalo"? WTH? Never heard of it. And the whole "MAY come to Verizon" is nothing we can't speculate ourselves. I don't see it happening. Sadly.

EDIT: I don't know who this "TecnoBuffalo" is, but even Droid-Life is quoting them now:

http://www.droid-life.com/2011/08/19/samsung-nexus-prime-seen-roaming-the-halls-of-verizon/

I STILL don't think Verizon would release something like Prime just weeks after Bionic, SGS2 and iPhone 5. They're relying on those phones to renew 80% of OG Droid owners who are coming up on NE2. That would leave 20% of Droiders, various sundry NE2 customers and new folks. Not enough, IMHO, to warrant bringing it out.

You didn't know this site? Actually that's one of my favorite. Noah Kravitz there was very cool reporter at phonedog.com before. Most of time, he was onto something though he could be wrong occasionally...

As interested as I am in a Verizon SG2.... all this recent noise about the Nexus Prime is enough for me to wait and see what happens in another month or two.

Launching the Nexus Prime in Oct vs the Iphone would be a smart play by VZW. Chances are neither the VZW or ATT version of the Iphone will have LTE. However, with the ATT version having HSPA+ ATT will market it as a 4g Iphone. The Nexus Prime would give VZW something to sell/market against it.

You can wait for the next big thing, Trent. And when the Prime is close, there will be more info on the Dinara and then more wait time. Then CES 2012 in January and then...

Unlike you, I guess, I'm on a bit of a time clock, here. My faithful OG Droid is getting more & more senile, more & more finicky, more & more bizarre in its behavior. There will be a delicate balance of waiting for the next big thing and jumping in on something. A lot of us can only wait so long before we HAVE to bite.

I hear you... but a Nexus device on Big Red is to tasty for me. My Droid Incredible is still going strong thanks to CM7. I have an upgrade on one of my lines and will get my last NE2 in Dec. I will forgo the NE2 for a nexus. If I had to get a new phone right now I would jump on the SG2!!!

However, I am starting to think that the Nexus Prime will be VZW version of the SG2. Why would you launch two Major Samsung phones in the space of a month? I haven't seen anything going through the FCC for VZW... in theory if a VZW SG2 is announced on the 29th it will be almost october before it launches bc it will have to clear the FCC???

Also there has been a lot of chatter on twitter this weekend about the NP. P3droid got his hands on either a NP or firmware dump and was posting about it.. Samsungs lawyers threatened him and had to stop.

True dat. I have an upgrade available now and 2 more in late September. I'd just hate to blow all three in the space of as many months.

I simply find it hard to see Verizon releasing an SGS2 variant, the Bionic, the iPhone 5 AND the Prime so close together. I mean, the more superphones you have out at the same time, the fewer of each you'll sell. There are only so many of us Droiders phasing into NE2... and we early adopters are already AT NE2. Many have already jumped on the phones out now.

It seems like Verizon is putting a lot of faith in bringing in new contracts (with tiered data plans, good luck) because the Droid crowd will only go so far.

What say you?

Here's how I am looking at this.... Not trying to stir the pot...so I apologize in advance if this speculation does

Bionic.. I think VZW knows this is going to be a dud. It simply missed its window to wow and impress. However Motorola is a good partner and they are obligated to try and sell it. Bionic gets September to be the new phone in the sandbox by itself. The reality is the Bionic is not a competitor for whatever apple releases in Oct (to most casual phone buyers).

SG2.. push release back to allow Bionic a exclusive window. Instead release a Nexus in Oct against Iphone. Gives a VZW something to fight ATT marketing campaign of having "the only 4g Iphone".

This changes the equation a bit. It is now the Bionic and then a month later Nexus vs Iphone.

But who knows... I guess we'll all find out some info a week from tomorrow.

Yeah, at least you & I agree that Motorola seems to be Verizon's preferred OEM. The Verizon SGS2 still hasn't passed FCC so it doesn't look like it's gonna happen any time soon So when IS it going to happen?

We'll all find out in about a week...

The Chief my contention is that the Bionic was delayed and now they are forced to move to plan B (releasing Bionic and GS2 around the same time) It's really the lesser of 2 evils. They can't delay the launch of the Bionic again and they won't delay the launch of the SGII so they have to make a decision here and this is their best option.

Delaying one of the other is out of the question at this point. I personally don't think the Bionic will be a huge seller for many reasons, none of which are that it's a bad phone. I think they can be launched close together because they are essentially 2 different phones. WebTop capabilities put it in a whole other demographic. Thats what I think at least.

Good points... you may be right. No matter what ends up being the case I just want to be able to stop speculating and buy a damn phone

Good theory, Cereal Killer, but I tend to believe that Motorola deliberately delayed the Bionic so they could suck up sales from Droiders at NE2. Perhaps they expect that the Bionic will be overwhelmingly popular with us because of its "enhancements" over the OG. But I think they'll be sorely disappointed... a lot of us jumped on the OG because it was a revolutionary phone 2 years ago.

But we've gotten smarter, Motorola. A LOT smarter. We don't like Blur (or whatever you're not calling it). We don't like locked bootloaders. And we tend to influence other phone owners into what to buy and what not to buy.

Until Moto can release another unlocked, straight vanilla Android device, I'm pretty well done with them. And I don't mind being vocal about it to others. Monday next we'll find out what the Stratosphere really is, where a REAL SGS2 is for Verizon, and basically have a good idea of the timeline for the next month or so.

Well said!! It's so refreshing to see people call it like it is.

I was a huge Moto fan. Still own the OG Droid. I've had a upgrade available since August.........of last year I could not bring myself to buy anything from them because of the reasons you stated above.

I've since become a HUGE fan of Samsung. They just know how to build a device and it APPEARS they listen to the customer. If they don't then they sure are smart because their hardware is stellar. Heck I even like TouchWiz 4.0 and I'm not a fan of custom UI's. But they did everything right on this phone except release it to us

Does it really matter how many "super-phones" are released on Verizon at the same time?

If, for example, Verizon wants to sell 500,000 phones by January 1, 2012 (the number is just for the sake of argument, I have no idea how much they sell in a given time frame), what does it matter if 100,000 of those are Motorola, 250,000 are SGSII, and 150,000 are Nexus Prime?

Verizon isn't manufacturing these phones. It doesn't hurt their interests in the least to have different manufacturers competing for Verizon customers.

Now, some might think "Yes, but if they release SGSII or Prime just a month or so after the Bionic, Moto might get pissed and that might affect their future business." To that, I say too bad. Moto dropped the ball by delaying it so stinking much. They asked for any problems they're running into now.

^^^^this is why the NP gets me so excited. Unlocked with vanilla Android!!! I want Android updates on my phone before I am ready for a new phone or the OEM deciding not to update the phone bc it is no longer a priority.

Now that you've taken the sensible, logical approach, look at it from the corporate angle. Verizon has partnerships with these companies to offer hot devices that will sell, and likely in order to get the first of a kind, or the 'upgraded specs over the competition' model, they promise things like exclusive launch windows. Or even better, Motorola has a little cash in the deal thrown at Verizon to be the first with certain technologies. Of course, there are contractual terms such that if Motorola is severely delayed (like they are with the Bionic) they lose the exclusivity option. The carriers do have all the power, but they're leveraging that into additional revenue under binding terms. Now, the other side of the equation is the Verizon buys/orders X thousand units to stock so they need to move those units. There are bean counters out there that know how many folks are up for renewal and what the targets are for probable phone sales per month at all levels (midrange, high end, dumbphone, etc). What they least likely can predict is who will buy high end unit X or high end unit Y, so they limit to one choice per release period in order to move those units. Business is complicated, eh?

No, that seems simple and reasonable, actually. I just can't believe that Motorola still would have exclusivity for X number of months as a result of their HUGE delays on the Bionic.

The only problem your explanation presents is how we'd be able to expect two phones from Samsung (SGSII and Prime) within such a short period of time. Unless the SGSII is not 4G and the Prime is. That would probably target two different sections of the customer base, making it possible that they would release during a short period of time.
