Go over here http://androidforums.com/admire-all-things-root/ for a guide on how to root your phone and install cwm and also remember to do a backup. After you have rooted your phone you can try the tethering.

Last night I successfully loaded a prerooted rom onto my vitality and tricked it into thinking it rs a metro pcs phone, then I programmed the phone on the cricket network and bam, even though my network reads as metro pcs, I have my same number, text/data/calls work just fine, plus, I can tether my laptop or tablet to my phones 3g data. I'll post up a step by step guide later tonight.
Make sure you set up adb, I don't feel like including how to do that on my tutorial, there are plenty guides on that.
