I have a lot of skepticism over the success of this, given how hard it's been for Microsoft to get a large slice of the pie, Blackberry fading into obscurity, and combine that will 2-year carrier contracts "preventing" people from upgrading to it any time soon.
The one reason that prevents people from switching platform is ecosystems. Longtime Android users are not gonna switch to iOS or the new Samsung platform (just as longtime iOS users are not gonna switch to Android or Samsung) because they have already invested a lot of money into buying apps and contents for their platforms. People are not going to switch and throw away hundreds or even thousands of dollars .
Android and iOS users are locked into the ecosystems by their purchased apps and contents. Its the same reason why people do not switch from Windows to Mac, Linux or Ubuntu. It's the same terrain why Windows phones are doomed. It does not matter if Mac, Linux, Ubuntu, Windows Phone, the new Samsung platform have superior technology, security or whatever. People who have invested in certain ecosystems would stay with their current ecosystems for economic reasons.
I give this little Samsung experiment... six to eight months before Samsung throws in the towel.

hmm...most likely samsung will target Asia first and then slowly expand...but yeah it wont be very successful due to to Android's growth continuing at a huge rate...it could be a great option for people on a budget.
samsung also released the windows 8 smartphone the ativ S so they have gone with other operating systems
This is true as well. I imagine Samsung will play around with other OSs, but will continue to pump out high end android devices as long as they remain a cash cow.
This is definitely a blow to the android community. As much as I love LG, Samsung and Android is a dynamic duo. Even if Tizen does well in Asian markets I don't see that success translating in the US. Plus where does that leave support for current Samsung devices.

They aren't completely dropping android, they are just simply introducing a new OS in some markets to feel out demand.
Don't believe all the sensationalism crap the media spews out to get more clicks. Android just plain works for Samsung. They aren't going away from it anytime soon.

And just for future reference, don't give BGR any real consideration when it comes to android news. It almost always has a negative or false spin on it and many believe them to be very pro apple site.

That's good to hear, I've only just bought my Samsung Galaxy Note this week and was worried when I read this thread, I'm pleased with it bar one thing.
Each time I try to type in a site's name it comes up with predictive text and try as I might I cant find how to turn this off.
Does anyone have this problem or a solution?
Replace Samsung's keyboard with Swiftkey 3. Samsung's keyboard is terrible. I tried living with it on my Tab 2 for about a week. Then Swiftkey 3 went on sale, so I snatched it right up. (I knew what I was buying, because my VTAB had come with Swiftkey X.) My wife resisted for better than a month. A couple days ago said "I should have done this when you told me to."

As quickly as I jumped on the Samsung bandwagon with the Note 2. I guess I'll be jumping off on my next phone. Oh well, I'm still enjoying the Note 2, but man...just when Samsung seemed like they were getting things right, they may end up with phones like the Instinct again...eek

This isn't the end of android for Samsung...
They're trying out their own mobile OS in select markets (ie not the US) just like many companies are. Nothings going to change anytime soon
Given how many retailers are having trouble selling pc's with Windows 8, I understand why Samsung would want to expand it's options. Samsung is making a killing on their Galaxy S phones. But if Google were to release a version of Android people didn't like, it would be bad for Samsung.
Microsoft, RIM, and HP have all failed to take a foot-hold in the smart phone market. It's nearly impossible to complete with Google and Apple's mobile ecosystems at this point. I don't see Samsung dropping Android any time soon. Plus, Tizen looks a lot better than the crappy OS Samsung used to put on it's low end touch screen phones.

Another reason why Samsung's proprietor mobile platform will fail:
Samsung is a hardware company and had been doinga a shitty job of writing software. If you've used software or drivers written by Samsung, then you already know making software is not their strong point.
I think it's good idea for samsung develop and manage their own OS instead of waiting for someone (google) to make OS and then port it to their devices. I bet with their own OS will have a lot less issues than now (i.e. WiFi issue 4.0.4 samsungs have).
And! It's open sources based on linux, I'm waiting this!

It's not open source, it's not based on Linux. Samsung has had their own os all along, they're simply replacing it.
Samsung provides the kernels, drivers and radios in their Android products.

Why?...Guaranteed, Samsung looses its steam as a mobile powerhouse, if it drops Android. Excellent points. I don't think Samsung will be able to completely dump Android for several years. And, even if that does happen it's not going to affect current phones/contracts. HTC took a chance on Android and look where it is today. Who knows, we may see some new manufacturers become big names in the next few years.
