Default possible to root without losing internal memory?

Had the SFII for a while and now getting annoyed with the constant low space messages.

It is still fully loaded with all of the original orange bloat ware, and just wondered if i could root and get rid of it without losing internal memory?

If not, what is the best way to back up (not needing to be rooted already)

Not really looking to unlock but if that is a by-product then that's ok.

Also what is the best Android version for this phone as it is currently running 2.3.5

Battery is a poor 14-16 hours with little use.
