Unhappy Problem rebooting with ROM Manager

Hi all, I've joined the forum in the hope that someone might be able to help me. Today I bought my first Android phone - the San Francisco Orange. Before I bought it, I read several reviews, and the only downside was that this particular phone comes bogged down with several unnecessary Orange applications, and that the old 2.1 version of Android is a bit slow.

However, I bought the phone on the strength that it can easily be upgraded to the latest version of Android.

I've found several websites with instructions on how to upgrade, and various methods on how to do it, and I've followed them all to the letter. The problem is with ROM Manager, I spent 7 hours yesterday, tearing out what little hair I have left with this application. First of all, I managed to get as far as rebooting the phone into recovery mode. Powering up the phone and holding the volume 'down' button doesn't work, so from within ROM Manager, I tried to select the "Reboot into Recovery" option, but every time I did so, it said "An error occurred while attempting to run privileged commands!"

I tried to uninstall and reinstall the application - several times! but I got the same thing every time. I even tried another application called Quick Boot, but that also gave me an error message that I can no longer recall.

Well, eventually, I did get ROM Manager to work. I rooted the phone again, and this time everything worked as it should, except when I rebooted the phone, it didn't reboot into recovery, it just rebooted as normal.

In my frustration, I've already tried all the other methods that bypass the use of ROM Manager, and none of them seem to work. It almost feels as if the phone manufacturers have made a few small modifications themselves in order to prevent the phone being upgraded, I can't understand why this isn't a standard option on the phone anyway, I'd willingly pay to upgrade if there was.

I've read that I can reboot by pressing the power on button together with the volume down button, but I've tried and tried again, and this doesn't work for me.

Can anybody help please?

Chris

You can get AnReboot from the market, which lets you boot into recovery!

You're definitely Rooted? Is there an app on your phone called SuperUser?

Yes I'm definitely rooted, and SuperUser is there. However, when I open it up, there's nothing in there!

Yes, and I tried it more than once. I downloaded it from different locations in case it was corrupt the first time.

Wiping? I don't understand. You mean reinstall it? I tried that about 4 times.

I know I attempted the TPT. Can't remember exactly what I had to do now, but I know I stopped because either something wasn't working, or it was getting too complicated. Altogether, I spent 7 hours on it yesterday, and It's all a bit of a blur now, but I did try just about every method out there. I'm usually good at this kind of thing, but yesterday, nothing would go right for me.

Gen1 to Gen2 TPT upgrade - Android @ MoDaCo

Probably the best thing to do.

Hi Chris....just a couple of suggestions.

1) for rooting Blade permanently, try Z4Root, modified by kallt_kaffe, Hero from Modaco: Android @ MoDaCo will need to become a member, but that is a good thing!!!

2) are you using appropriate version of Recovery, the latest versions are just for GEN2 Blades/OSF.....and you have a GEN1 for sure......

When you Launch RM, what Recovery version does it display at the top??
Where Flash ClockworkMod Recovery shows the current Recovery??

anything over 3.0.1.4 will not work on GEN1 Blade/OSF's.

If your version is wrong for the phone you have, you can flash an appropriate version by going to the bottom in ROM Manager, tap "All ClockworkMod Recoveries"....you should get a list there, which includes 3.0.1.4.

Select that and tap OK, and the 3.0.1.4 should be flashed to your phone.

Hope this helps.....

I know I have a GEN1, I downloaded an app to find that out.

My ROMManager is version 4.3.2.3

I'm trying your other suggestions right now, so I'll be back later to let you know how I get on - thanks!

Ok, I've managed to install the modified Z4Root, but when I try your other suggestion in MODManager, I select version 3.1.0.4, but when I tap 'Ok' I get a message: "An error occurred while attempting to run privileged commands!"

Is it possible to uninstall MODManager and download an older version from anywhere? Would that have the same effect?

Basically you can't seem to get root :L
So odd

You'd probably be best to just do the TPT but we can try diagnose the problem if you want

The Z4Root actually installed and said that it had rooted my phone successfully, it didn't say anything about being rooted already?

shadow, that whole volume up and power button thing doesn't work for me at all, I don't know why

Having said all of that, I think I'm actually getting somewhere. I'm currently trying the method used on this page: OneClickRecovery - version 2.0 (now also works in CM7) - Android @ MoDaCo

I've managed to boot into recovery, and I'm now backing the data up, fingers crossed. Now I'm just looking for the most suitable rom to upgrade to, there's so many out there, any recommendations?

You'll need a Gen1 ROM, so Swedish Spring i guess

For the TPT, you need to extract the zip to the SD!

Ok, now I'm really in trouble. I've downloaded the ROM, copied the image file to the SD card, both zipped AND unzipped as a precaution. I now have the phone in recovery, just backed it up. I selected "apply sdcard:update.zip", and that didn't work, so I tried "Install zip from sdcard" and that doesn't work either!! It says ""Can't open /sdcard/update.zip (No such file or directory) Installation aborted" - I've no idea what to do next

Ok, panic over, I thought I had bricked my phone for a minute, then I realized that all my data was still intact when I rebooted.

I found a website with instructions on how to upgrade, and I've picked up at the stage where I'm at right now. Unfortunately, I'm still having problems

I've rebooted into recovery, I've downloaded my ROM, and I've got as far as this:

Quote:
Use the Volume buttons on the side of the phone to highlight mounts and storage.
Press the Home button to select.
Highlight mount USB storage and press the Home button.
A new storage device should be recognised on your computer. On your computer, copy the ROM (the zip file) you downloaded during Step 2 and paste it straight to the root of the storage device. Do not paste it into any folders, just the root of the device. Do NOT unzip or extract the file.
The problem is, when I highlight "Mount USB Storage", I get this message: "Unable to write to ums(?) lunfile (No such file or directory)"

I'm way out of my depth on this now, so I'm open to any suggestions. I've run into problems every step of the way, so I'm thinking this just isn't meant to be

Ok, I simply took the SD card out and copied the ROM over manually using an SD card reader. I've placed the SD card back in the phone with the zipped ROM on it, and it appears to be installing - at last!

After all of that, I took my SF back to the store for a refund today! After only a week, I'm quite disappointed with the phone. My emails and text messages were extremely delayed, some numbers in my contacts wouldn't connect. So I restored the phone back to the original software, took it back and exchanged it for an HTC Wildfire, which in my opinion is much better, except that I can only connect to the internet with Wi-Fi, so I might need some help with that later on. I'll see if I can find a solution elsewhere in the forum first.

Ouch. You exchanged an OSF for a Wildfire? I could never switch my lovely 3.5" 480x800 screen for the much lower resolution (and smaller) screen on the Wildfire. Still each to their own. Hope it works out for you.

I admit, I did prefer the display on the OSF, but that's no good if the phone isn't doing it's job. Email is one of my priorities, and I was receiving them up to 10 hours later on the SF, even with third party apps like MailDroid.

I think the last straw was when I dialled a number, and it wouldn't connect, so I dialled the same number from my old Nokia E72 .... no problem. I need a phone I can rely on, and unfortunately, the OSF fails. It's a pity, because it's a nice phone, and I can usually live with a minor niggle or two, but the email and text problem was a big issue for me.

HTC Wildfire S or just Wildfire....???

Definitely a step back in terms of screen resolution???

Can't understand your probs with email & text coz my Gmail is perfect.

I have also used K-9, but went back to Gmail.

Also, SMS/MMS with GoSMS no probs whatsoever, who is your provider?

Some/most providers need to be set up manually, creating the APN's from known lists out there, but it is no biggie.

There are also a number of diallers, like AOSP and ZTE, but they are easy once you decide which one to use.

Mine works fine, also using CSipSimple on SS5, no probs with VOIP. (soon to be ditched, regretfully, for GSF)

Regretfully coz SS5/GEN2 has simply been sooo stable and good on this phone, I am loathe to change, but I must, or SN will have my guts for garters!!! almost no problems with FC's or freezes, or anything.

But, I will move on, with a full back-up of my existing set-up, just in case......

Sorry to go on, but it is a pity you didn't give it just another week, but obviously you need a day-to-day stable phone.......now what's this about no Mobile Date on your Wildfire????

All the best, and let us know how you get on

Well, I am quite new to all of this, so creating APN's and all that is way out of my depth. I'm sure it's a simple process once you know what you are doing, but I did look into it, and it just looked too complicated for me. The easier option for me was just to exchange the phone for something else.

But once again, I find myself in the same situation as I did last week. I've spent all morning trying to root my Wildfire. It all looks so simple in print, but it just won't work for me I can only access internet using Wi-Fi, so I thought perhaps a software upgrade might resolve the issue. I've visited countless websites, followed instructions to the letter, yet the phone won't respond. The furthest I got was an error message telling me the firmware was 'too new'

But you need APN for mobile internet and mms.

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Access_Point_Name

either you get them from your provider... or DIY with a little help from your friends :-)

If you have issues with two separate devices you need that help.

Maybe that's the problem, I've synchronized the phone with my Hotmail account and seem to have a delay on the Wildfire as well I never had this problem with the Nokia E72, I received emails instantly all of the time.

Since my last post, I've unlocked the phone and managed to get on the internet with my Orange simcard. I've found out that the Wildfire can't be rooted, but that's not a big deal, my Android software does everything I want it to, so why change it? It's just the delayed email that's the problem now, you think changing to Gmail might fix it?

Is the hotmail account configured for POP3 or IMAP?

I know there were issues with hotmail, POP3 on certain handsets. Switching to IMAP sorted the issue.

I've now configured it with Exchange ActiveSync. Not exactly sure what that is, but I read that it's now in sync with my Windows Live, which means I 'should' get my emails instantly on the phone now .... just verified this by sending myself an email. The only downside is that there's no audible warning, but I can live with that. Pity I didn't know all of this before I took the SFO back, but like dannymur said, maybe I should have given it another week. Still, I'm happy with the Wildfire.

Just curious, do you get an audible warning when you receive an email with the default Android email app? I'm still wondering if it would pay me to change over to Gmail?

Default bricked zte blade

hi to all..

i am new to develope a smartphone,so i guess i messed it up... :P

i have a zte blade with a default rom android 2.1..ive made a succesful update to android froyo 2.2 and then i had the brilliant idea of rooting my device installing custom roms, busybox etc...well..i rooted my phone temporarily cause the permanent root doesnt work temporary root says that after phone reboot the device is not longer rooted)...i used the z4 apk to do that...superuser was installed as well as busy box...i downloaded the cyanogenmod 7.0.3 stable without the google apps and then flashed it...clockworkmod recovery was running and installing the new rom...

everything seem ok..and then my phone reboot the green android little man was there and then the image of the blue android little man skating...i thought i made it but instead of booting normally the blue android skating little man keeps appearing on the screen and it doesnt boot at all...i think i brick my zte...

i found a solution in a forum that says push the volume down button plus the poweron button together to start the clockwork recovery mod...i did it but there are only the basic options there and nothing more...no secondary oprin like usb mass storage...i guess tht is because my phone its not rooted yet since reboot after cyanogenmod installation....

so....here i am...what should i do now in order to fix this bootloop???any suggestion????plsssss???? )
thx!!!

If you don't mind losing data and want to use CyanogenMod I'd say use TPT to re-install the OS, recovery etc

Sorry for jumping in, here are wbaw's instructions for TPT to restore phone and install recovery, you can choose to either run custom TPT, with no ROM included, and then flash ROM of choice, or use combined TPT wit Cyanogen or GSF.

Quote:
Instructions
Copy a Gen2 rom zip file to your sd card ready to install. Check the md5sum of that against the source (you can use AFV for this). (or a combined tpt+rom)

Unzip this Gen2 TPT zip file to your sd card, it should create an image directory.

Check the nandroid.md5 file in the image directory on your sd card using AFV on your phone (long press on nandroid.md5 file, then Verify Nandroid Backup)

Power off, wait a few seconds, then power on with menu & vol+ held.

It should take a few seconds to flash the new Gen2 firmware (you should see some green text), then it should reboot into ClockworkMod recovery, use that to wipe data & then install your Gen2 rom.

Once installed, remove the image directory from your sd card, to prevent accidentally reinstalling. Once you have installed this just vol+ & power on will send you back into tpt mode if there is an image directory, even if you needed menu & vol+ before.
Note, you may need to use card reader connected to PC, with your SD card, if you cannot connect phone by USB, so amend above instructions accordingly.
