Popping noise when connected to auxillery

I often connect my phone to a portable radio to play music, via a double ended headphone cord.

When playback ceases, and the phone is still connected, it begins to make a faint popping noise. It's very annoying and i'm not sure what the cause of it is.

what have ppl done to eliminate this issue?
