I got a reply regarding flickering screen from sony uk support.
Thank you for contacting the Sony Ericsson support centre.
We are sorry to hear of the issues you are experiencing with the diplay flickering on your Sony Ericsson Xperia mini pro.
We can confirm that this issue is not a know inherent problem with the Sony Ericsson Xperia mini pro.
We would first suggest that you try to perform a repair of the software using PC Companion. If the issue is related to a problem with your software this will be repaired and your handset will work as intended. To do this, you will need to install PC Companion from the Sony Ericsson website. Please follow the steps below to do this:
1. Go to Sony Ericsson - Sony Ericsson
2. Select your region
3. Go to Support
4. Click on the ‘Downloads’ tab
5. Select ‘Read more and download’ below PC Companion
6. Download now
To then perform a repair on your handsets software, please follow the steps below:
1. Open PC Companion
2. Start 'Support Zone'
3. Select Software Updates
4. Click on Repair
Please ensure your handset is not connected to your PC when performing the above as you will be instructed to connect your handset once you have followed the above steps. Your handset must also remain powered off at all times.
Please note it may be the case that user data is lost during this upgrade. We therefore recommend backing up any data to your SIM card, Memory Stick, or PC before upgrading.
In the event that the Software Update fails to resolve the problem then you will need to send your Sony Ericsson handset to our service location to be examined by our authorised service engineers. The turnaround time for this process is currently on average 5-7 working days, from when the repair centre receives the handset. We offer apologies for any inconvenience this may cause.
Please click the provided link below to book your Sony Ericsson handset in for repair. This link will be valid until 12pm the following day, after the allotted time period we will need to provide you with a new link.
Once the booking process has been complete you will be sent an email confirming all details and provided with a freepost address to our service location. Please ensure that the correct IMEI is taken down to allow us to provide accurate updates. The IMEI number can be located on the underside of the handset where the battery is inserted; this will begin with 35 or 01 and be 15 digits in length.
Place your handset in a Jiffy bag and send it via your Post Office obtaining a Proof of Postage receipt. Please ensure you do not send your SIM card and battery cover in with your Sony Ericsson handset. We would suggest you only send in accessories such as your memory stick, charger and battery if they could be related to the fault.
Please send a copy of your proof of purchase along with the handset in the Jiffy bag, if you do not have a copy of your proof of purchase we will endeavour to validate the handset warranty. Should we not be able to do this we will contact you to supply further information regarding the Proof of Purchase.
Please note that if the damage is not covered by the Sony Ericsson Limited Warranty, there is a fee of £10.00 to have your product returned should you not accept the estimated costs for repair.

Seems strange that two new phones would have the same problem
