Default Bluetooth security

I was trying to send a file to a colleague today using Bluetooth with frightening results! I wasnt able to send it was the first problem but he was able to browse my complete file directory from his phone and take off what he wanted!!!!! I could get my phone to "Pair" with his but not "Connect". What was I doing wrong?
