I need some help with loading my custom kboard.....I've followed the guides for installing the files, but when I run Linda Manager to install the kboard, I get a message asking if I want to replace the original file. I press OK and then install, and it goes through the motions, but when its finished a message pops up which says that "HTC_IME mod could not be installed on this phone".
Does anyone have any idea what I might be doing wrong?

I've gotten that too. Something when the GUI tries to the bat file fails.
Workaround: Drop 1 file you want to load (and only 1) into the payload folder in AC-SWM files. Double click on loader.bat. As long as your X10 is recognized, it loads the file same as the GUI would do.
To do the other, replace the file in the payload folder & run the Loader.bat again.
After the 2 apk files are on the X10, you should be able to get the tutorial going at step 9 again.
New keyboard is loads better than the stock one.

In 2.1 there is no "locale & Text".
Any suggestions how to activate???

go into settings, then "Language and keyboard", you'll find a checkbox to enable your HTC keyboard

Before you start, make sure your phone is set to allow apps from unknown sources. To enable this, go to Settings > Applications and make sure Unknown Sources is checked
2. Open the zip archive and copy the files to your desktop
AT&T users will not be able to install this keyboard using steps 3-8 as they cannot side load apps. If you are an AT&T user, scroll down to see the instructions at the bottom of this guide explaining how to install the HTC keyboard. When you have done that, go to step 9

AT&T users cannot sideload apps so steps 3-8 will not work for you. Just follow the instructions below to install the keyboard to your phone, then go back to step 9 above and continue from there For this to work you must make sure you've installed the Windows USB driver for your phone and make sure that .NET 4 is installed on your computer
1. Make sure USB debugging is enabled on your phone. If it is not, go to Settings, tap 'Applications' then 'Development' and make sure 'USB debugging' is checked
2. Download the Android Sideload Wonder Maching here. Extract the 'AC-SWM' folder to a folder on your computer that you will easily remember.
3. Connect your USB cable to your phone and the computer.
4. Open the 'AC-SWM' folder and double click 'AndroidCentral-SWM.exe' to run the program
5. Click 'Choose a file' and browse the files you saved for the HTC Keyboard. Load one at a time, and click 'Go'. Repeat for each of the 2 Keyboard files
6. Follow any instructions in the command window then your Keyboard will be successfully installed
This software can also be used to sideload other apps to your AT&T android phone
Now go back up to the top to step 9 and continue from there

I just followed this tutorial to the T, 3 times, FAIL
I have an AT&T X10a, not rooted, not debranded, usb debugging enabled, wasn't sure if I needed to mount the sd card or not so I didn't (but I tried it after mounting it as well since it didn't work the first time around). The first problem is trying to enable apps from unknown sources. It says go to settings/applications and make sure allow apps from unknown sources is checked....problem is I don't have that option when I go to settings/applications, the only options it gives me are
Manage applications
Development
Selecting the first option just shows a list of applications on my phone, the second option brings up
USB debugging
Stay Awake
Allow Mock locations
USB debugging is checked, I tried this again after checking allow mock locations and still my device isn't recognized by the sideload program.
I have .net 4 installed, usb driver is installed, I don't know what else to do. Any ideas/suggestions?
I have heard that SWLM can be a bit quirky. I think I remember something about needing to turn off the phone and pc, connect them and restart the PC and it will find the phone, but that is dragging info up from the depths so I would check it out first. The search function on the website isn't great so I'd have a google for Sideload and maybe include AT&T in it. May well bring you back to the forum anyway but I find when I search on here that you get sooooo many hits most of which aren't relevant.

As rosered mentioned, the only way my laptop will recognize my X10 is if I connect it before powering the laptop. I do have the full set of SDK tools installed on my laptop as well but but I am not sure that is necessary.

I'm done! Didn't work, it's not really that serious to go any further to try to get it to work. Thanks guys

I'm not a quitter, so immediately after I posted the above update I began my mission to get this thing to work. I downloaded and installed SDK Tools, downloaded and installed the Google API's, attempted to update my ADB driver but it wouldn't let me, said I already have the latest driver installed. Bummed out, I decided to give SWM one last shot. First I went to My computer to see if I could see my phone, I did! Right then I had hope, so I opened SWM and attempted to install the HTC keyboard and low and behold my device was recognized!! I am now rocking the HTC keyboard on my X10a and am loving the much wider spacebar. Thanks alot guys, couldn't have done it without you.

I have gone to Gesture settings and allowed them and then set my swipe U/D/L/R preferences but when I try them on the keyboard nothing happens, just does the same as before ie. input text using the letter I stop my swipe on.
Please help me!

Reason: Fixed - seems to work now.
If I understand correctly, multiple personalized keyboards can be installed and changing between them is possible via input method without having to install each one from the SD card each time you want to change it. If this is correct, please continue on as I am having difficulties!
I installed the HTC keyboard no problem. And then I got to making my own with Gimpsta and has the same problem as another poster as installing a new one would disallow me to use the previously installed HTC keyboard. I used the Linda file manager, changed the names of the files, but nonetheless when I install it, the new one replaces the previous HTC keyboard. I noticed that even after I change the file names, the selection still says "HTC_IME mod" if you know what I mean. I have tried unzipping the renamed file on my PC and then transferring, or copying the zip file to the sd card first and then extract. Both to no avail! Anyone experience this?

I have a file on my SD card called HTC and it has the original Jonasl plus four Gimpsta ones in different colours. Being a fickle girl I change them to suit my wallpaper.
No you can't use input method to change them as they are a skin over the top of the original Jonasl one. You have to go to the file on the sd card via Linda, select and use the installer. It says it will overwrite the existing one but it doesn't get rid of it from your sd card, so for example if I go from my red wallpaper to my pink then I just reinstall the pink over the red.... until I get bored again and go back to my red (said I was fickle).

Is anyone else having problems with installing custom keyboards made through the gimpsta website.
I can make the keyboard I want, and get the apk file onto my phone. But when I go to Open the App manager to try to Install the apk, I just get a "could not open /sdcard/HTC_IME_themed_by_gIMpSTa.apk as APK file" error everytime.

Just having problems loading custom backgrounds.
It asks for a PNG file that is exactly 480x342.
I supply it a PNG file that is 480x342. Yet it gives an error message "Invalid file type or larger than 1000K!". The file is 393K!?!
Any ideas on this one? Your help is much appreciated.
I had exactly the same thing, I was convinced everything was ok with the files I uploaded but it kept coming back with that error message.
After some help from Mr Womble, I tried uploading on a different computer and everything was fine. Do you have access to an alternative computer?

.NET 4 is installed on your computer.. what is .NET 4.. i didint understand..
one more thing.. after i download AC-SWM-v1.0 and extract the file after that i open it the file name is should be AndroidCentral-SWM.exe... but in my folder is AndroidCentral-SWM.. where the exe? and than when i double click that file, a warning show To run this application, you first must install one of the following versions of the .NET Framework :v4.0.30319.. what that mean?
I installed that, and got the Loader.dat error, fixed that by moving the files into the same folder as the Loader.dat & AndroidCentral-SWM files exist.
It goes through the motions, but I never see my phone ID as it says I should, and I don't get keyboards on my phone.
I figure my issue might be the USB device drivers, under device manager, it shows:
Sony Ericsson sa0101
_____Sony Ericsson sa0101 ADB Interface Driver
I have un-installed it and when I first attach the phone it shows it as a X10a but can't find the driver and then sets it back as above.

Ugh, I'm right there with you. Have been trying for hours (I have a ATT phone). I found forums for the SWM, but couldn't find the answers there. I'm not a techie person, but it shouldn't be this hard! I downloaded the sdk program, but just not savvy in what I am supposed to be doing with it.
There was a post somewhere about turning the phone and pc off, connecting them and then booting the PC up and it should recognise the phone. SLWM is very tricky by what I have seen on here.

You are not kidding! I rebooted and did this over and over yesterday. Left my computer on last night and just worked through today. Here I am at 12:45 am and just thought...let's see if it will work, for the hell of it. I did NOTHING different from when I wrote my last post...in fact, I don't even think I rebooted. For whatever reason, it worked tonight. I couldn't even tell you why. I spent hours on this last night, and nothing!
Not complaining...love the keyboard...it is so much better than the stock one. I was going to buy a keyboard today (swipe) but am glad I waited!

Just a quick question though, is there a way to remove the settings button shortcut embedded on the keyboard? I've lost track of how many times I've accidentally pressed that thing when all I wanna do is liven up a text with a smiley.

The best keyboard I found was ThickButtons which also had a great dictionary and I was able to read the font without squinting - my age I'm afraid.
I would rate the HTC second to ThickButtons as I tend to catch the letter either side of the one I am pressing. Can the keys be enlarged?

You could try using it in Compact Qwerty set up which gives you a bigger target as such to aim at! You can set the keyboard to cycle between qwerty/compact qwerty and T9 numeric keypad in the HTC_IME settings then Gestures. Mine is set to swipe right and swipe left to change them.

I tried that a few months back, but it was frustrating because you can't feel the keys being pressed, with it being a touchscreen lol
