Ok, are you using PC Companion or the Update Service to perform this function?

Try doing it again.

Usually when it sticks on step 2, I think it is still downloading the update from Sony. But I am not sure.

For me, I tried 3 times to update using PC Companion and the first 2 times it just timed out.

I have no idea what you are looking at.

What is step two. Take me through it.

You have PC Companion open. It asks you to turn off your phone and hold the back button and plug the USB cable in at the same time during PC Companion (use a different USB port if you haven't tried so far) Is that right so far?

Then what happens? What does it say on the screen?

Does it show what version of PC Companion you have installed? I do not have PC Companion. I have another app from Sony called SEUS (which Sony no longer has for download on their website) And the last 3 times I have updated my phone I have used the x10 Flashtool.

Ok, the basic explanation is : Unplug the phone > power the phone off (do not power it back on) > press and hold the back key > then connect the cable (ensure you have the button held down BEFORE you connect the cable or the handset will power on and the program will not run.

Or the tip I give to people have problems following those steps is:

Turn off phone and remove battery.
Plug in USB cable.
Open PC Companion and when it tells you to turn on the phone holding the back button...then.....
Hold the back button on the phone and then while holding the back button, insert the phone battery. Then release the back button.
