I've been reading the rumours about the Sony Hayabusa in June/July. I'm think I'm still going to get the Xperia S.

The problem with phones is that there's always a new one on the horizon. If I waited for that I'm sure between now and then another phone will be announced as coming soon so by the time the Hayabusa is released I'd be waiting for the next big thing. You end up constantly changing your mind, waiting, changing your mind, waiting, etc. You'll never actually get a new phone!

I was in two minds thinking about waiting for the Mint, but I just like everything about the Xperia S, and also I am too impatient to wait.

I was ready to get annoyed when I saw the title of this article but it's only about what we're all well aware of - that the Xperia didn't come out on Monday.

Just had the white and black dummy phones in my hand, I know they are the same size but the white just looks bigger in the hand, also it was grubby as hell, does anyone know if the dummies are made from the same materials or just cheap plastic ? I honestly don't know which colour to go for now

It won't be sim free from 3. It will be locked into their network.

It's about 15 to unlock and I bet when you buy you need to pay 10 topup on purchase.

So for sim free credentials you need to add 25 to the price.

Still a good deal however, still cheaper than sim free from handtec for instance.

Does anyone know if I buy the phone on a 3 contract through buymobiles, will it be locked and if so unlockable? My only memory of 3 is when you couldn't unlock their handsets years ago.

Cheers

Edit: You can

Edit: You can
Any phone on 3 can be unlocked for a charge, but they will require you to pay the full terms of the contract (24 months) before they do. It would be cheaper just buying sim free. If you bought it from 3 as a payg then I believe they simply charge 15 for unlocking.

I maybe wrong but I think that's the terms.

On the 3 contract it says soon, on the others I think it says the 13/14 can't remember exactly which date.

Jeez it didn't say that you had to pay all the contract up front on 3's site!

If you have a contract then you need to abide by that contract and pay its full term, you maybe able to get it unlocked but you would still need to continue paying the monthly fee. If its 24 months then you have to pay for 24 months or pay it all in one lump sum.

I see no point in buying on contract then having it unlocked? On payg yes, but not contract.

Well I tend to get bored after a year or so, what I tend to do is sell on the mobile unlocked and buy the latest smartphone sim free/payg model for the remainder of the contract, I guess a few people do it this way to avoid the initial large outlay just for the phone itself.

Oh I may have found a few aftermarket sites that will unlock a 3 mobile without having to payout the full contract first.

Yup,

I done that once, you end up paying more still but you don't really notice as its spread out.

I now stick with 3 and buy sim free every year now and just swap the sim to the new phone. Been with 3, 3 years now.

This sounds a stupid question, but how easy is it to get your PAC? I realise the operator will try to get you to stay with them, but is it usually fairly straight forward and they accept you're leaving and give you the code?

Got it! In black, from initial playing, the capacitive buttons are absolutely fine to use, no problems at all and the screen, my word..it's makes my ip4 look ordinary.

Just went into my local 02 store, had a look at the black dummy version. Said they didn't have a demo model to show me. Have to say having seen both black and while dummy phones I am pleased with my choice of white.

Went in to my Local 3 store at lunch time, and they said they cant release the phone until the 15th, had a look at the dummy phone, and looked decent, whether the real thing looks any different is another thing. It’s a decent size, handtec better get the finger out.

So here's what I got in my box:

Phone
USB Plug
USB to phone adaptor
HDMI cable
Spare screen protector (there is already a factory fitted one on my S)
Earbud earphones with inline remote
Voucher for NFC Tags when they are released in the UK (which when I registered the Xperia S isn't a option? So I just chose other)

Not bad at all, I'm very impressed, whether you choose black or white the phone is amazing. As I've said the buttons are easy to press, the typing is as easy if not easier than my IP4 (once my hands adjusted to the different dimensions) Oh when signing up for the contract, the Xperia S isn't on O2's system, had to be registered as a Arc S but then amended manually on my contract paper copy.

I won't bother putting up pics as all the main sites ie Gsmarena, Phonearena, Xperiablog all have plenty, also I'm going to be too busy playing and installing, on that note the free space on the phone memory is showing as 1.7gb ish! A bit different from my HTC Desire which I had to root to stop showing the full memory warning!

If anyone has any q's about the handset, just pop them on here and I'll do my best to answer them asap.

Cheers

There is the slightest hint of lag when navigating and I mean slightest but to be honest it's been a while since I've been on Android, it's certainly faster and smoother than my old IP4 (I know they are not direct comparisons but with Apple's super optimised ios it should be silky smooth on my older 4), especially on browsing, it's so nice to have flash back. As for crashing, hell no I just keep on opening programs but no crashing at all, has someone experienced this Zafonic, if so let me know what they're opening and I'll try and duplicate.

Awesome, ios used to lag really bad especially while web browsing but the XS just doesn't, I also prefer the Android market so much more than Apple's App store. Also been playing with the camera from the lock screen, it's great to have a camera that works that fast.

For those of you noticing some lagging, often when doing background syncs, this is not really down to the processor - but the OS.

Every Android device I've reviewed has lagged or stuttered at times, with the exception of the Galaxy Nexus - running ICS. It seems Android OS may have finally fixed a number of issues, so when the Xperia S gets ICS - any UI issues should disappear. ICS, for example, supports hardware acceleration.

So, it's probably fair to say that the Xperia S will get even better when it gets ICS - not just a new look.

I'm struggling to imagine why I'd need a quad-core processor, as the Galaxy Nexus was awesome and I loved it, except the camera. The Xperia S has a great camera, and the dedicated camera button (plus the quick start mode) so it ticks all the boxes. I really don't care about the next device to be announced for the summer.

For a tablet/laptop, I can see where quad-core may work - especially if it's bigger and gets a bigger battery too.
