It may be obvious but....
Turn WiFi on on the phone while standing near the WiFi router. then, if your router is in the list of WiFi SSIDs found by the phone, select yours and enter your WPA2 PSK password (You *DO* have a password, right?) then, barring an update from Sony which breaks WiFi on the phone, or an actual fault on the phone, you should be good to go.
Another thought: Can you connect to your WiFi with another phone/tablet and/or can your Xperia U connect to another WiFi SSID OK?
A good tool for assessing WiFi signal strength and which channels are in use id InSSIDer, it's a well-respected wireless admin tool. And free!
