I'm fully stock with none of the known culprit applications and have had 2 random reboots in the last week.

I think lookout mobile may cause them also, but have not been able to prove it. I get maybe 2 reboots a week right now, after my first 48 hours with my modified BO 3.0

Another one to look into would be tapatalk, several people, me included, have mentioned reboots while using it.

I've had tapatalk throw a fatal error that led to a soft reboot, but never random, because I don't have it auto updating.

What's most confusing are the soft reboots from using rom toolbox... Never had a phone get overwhelmed by that app like this phone is.

unfortunately poweramp is another culprit I suspect. not sure if it's already been mentioned. I've had 3 or 4 reboots while using it and putting my phone in pocket or during it down. it makes me wonder though is the problem really specific apps or is it something flawed with our spectrums?

That's weird. I used poweramp and had no issues.

The argument and debate really is if it's the apps or the phone. I've used all these apps on other phones and never had random reboots so is it the apps not working with the phone or is the lg os flawed? I personally think it's the lg version of android, but I guess we'll see when we get an aosp or cm9 and if the reboots continue.

I find it hard to believe ts all the fault of the apps since the apps, phones, users and configuration are all different. If there was one app that didn't work, all users of that app would experience the issue. Logically, we have to conclude the lg version of android is the issue.

So I guess shut down different functions of lg if possible. I did freeze the mlt app and I'm having less errors in logcat. Right after I refresh NO I can get antirust to work but about an hour into running the phone I'll get a reboot everyone I run the CPU and memory test. I don't get reboots on any other tests. Curious.

It's got to be something to do with out of memory or memory allocation.

I don't know that it's ram allocation. It's more likely all the various lg apps, interfering with the java engine. All the reboots I get are java.lang.RuntimeException and calls for dead processes. I suspect all those lg monitoring and junk apps are to blame.

I don't get any reboots on stock so I wonder if some of those junk apps from lg work together to deal with memory management? Either kill a bunch of them or add one/enough back in tk gwt them to stop the problems. I noticed while on stock v4 I could freez the "apps" program. If i did the same with v6 I would get all sorts of FCs.

I think that's what they're *supposed* to do, but I don't think they do as effectively as designed.

I had a random power off this morning, took 10 minutes of trying various amounts of time holding in the power button before it powered back on. When it came back on the battery was reporting 92% (should be correct I had just charged it to full an hour or so before it died)

had a reboot yesterday. Text notification was sounding and i was unlocking the phone to check the message. Was kind of like a soft reboot, was a quick reboot back to home. When it got back to the home screen my notification bar was empty. A full power off fixed that though.

I know there were a few posts about undervolting and the settings etc, but I dont recall what thread they were in. Can you post a link to the thread or anymore info about the "best" settings for this?

No reboots so far with Popcorn Kernel...I have no clue if the Blitz kernel could be contributing to reboots...will post more info after running this setup longer as its only been a day and change.

Froze mine a few days ago, nothing new to report, stock having wacky data issues (Google voice won't send messages, but received them fine, both markets occasionally tell me I have no internet connection), and I had a random reboot about an hour ago and one yesterday also.

Thumbs up Thx to "all" who have contributed on this thread!!!

FIRST...THX TO "ALL" WHO HAVE CONTRIBUTED ON THIS THREAD!!!

I'm a UPS driver & have an ear bud in my left ear all day during work listening to my music. I was using Winamp, which I f'ing loved, and had 6-12 reboots daily. I noticed a significant drop in battery levels after the device rebooted. I have, for the last 2 work days, frozen via TB Winamp and I'm trying out Google music and Amazon mp3 Cloud player. I have had 1 reboot during this time and it happened while I was getting directions on Google Maps. Without fail I experience multiple reboots, and sometimes brief bootloops, when I run all GPS, data, wifi and Google Maps to get directions. All hell breaks loose when I'm getting directions! As much as I love Winamp it won't be easy but I'm gonna stay the course, get some more time on both Gm and ACloud and report back then.

Hey ups, for a thought for you.
1. Make sure LTE is off
2. The the phone out of any case it might be in
3. Hold the phone up to your AC vent while it is getting directions, and but after also
4. Report back of it still reboots while getting directions

(If you are on LTE or if it is searching for it, while using GPS, it might be an overheating issue, especially if you have it in a case to protect it while you are working).

If this helps, you might want to look into a vent phone holder for using it for GPS. But take it down in the winter! :-)

It is a slim chance this will help, as it is more likely to be asoftware issue, but you never know.

Fyi Google music runs entirely through the web and if it is a heat issue, this will make it worse.

Not exactly. Gmusic caches songs to your phone, so it only uses data to pre cache a song; once you play it, future plays are off the cache on the sd card. If you exempt that folder from a cache cleaner, you can really reduce your data usage with that app.

It sounds like winamp was messing up his phone... I haven't installed it on my Spec because it doesn't feel right to me o a phone.... Love it on my laptop though.

But with the issues he is having now, if it is heat related, Google music would wreak havoc on him when he starts using it the first couple of times (depending on how many songs he has, my Google music account has about 7000 songs, and would always have to download as they won't all fit on my SD)

Same here. Maybe the overheating, combined with other apps is causing his reboots.

It reboots mine at times heat or not, more so with heat. Nothing works for me well but stock, reboots are very rare, but they do happen. I'm begging to think its just the phones android system.

Default update...

I hear ya guys...

I have around 1200 songs. The little I have used Google Play music I simply start the app and it gives me a list of my songs and I select my different particular play options and start listening. It sounds as though you can stream music but I keep data disabled all day and turn it on when needed but not for music during work. I do all my down loading at home and off the road.

Now I can tell you I via TB have frozen everything possible and then some so my apps are at a bare minimum and I try different combinations of apps occasionally to see if the reboots stop. As of right now I have, for the last week, used Opera browser (instead of Dolphin), Holo launcher, (instead of Go launcher EX), stock MMS (instead of Go MMS pro), Google Play music (instead of Winamp pro), and No-frills CPU Control @ 1.242/192 and gallimaufry gov and I have had 1 reboot which we have already discussed.

I'm guessing over heating has been my issue. I'm in San Antonio and we have had temps of 107. I also keep it in a closed leather case so I will buy an open one asap...thx for the tip finndo77.

Anybody else have any reboots then when back to the home screen have app updates? Happened twice in the past week and half. Also after the reboot I had to power off and on to get the time, battery, etc to show back up in the notification bar.

now that i think about it... the 4 or 5 rebbots have i had since i got got the phone have been the same way. No notifications bar when home screen come back, power off then back on and there is a new app update, Doesnt do it everytime there are updates available though. I dont think there is any pattern to the apps either.

Any of you guys/ girls having constant reboot issues noticing anything like this? Especially you guys/ girls who have 100's upon 100's of apps.

No one seems to know. Near as I can tell, it's a resource management app dor the LG version of android. I froze it and haven't had any problems.

I've found that I don't see any benefit to freezing apps. I have actually noticed more problems if I do freeze some. I always experiment with it and try to see how many I can get frozen but no matter how many I freeze I notice absolutely no performance increase.

Same here, but I tend to freeze things I don't need/use (system apps) and if there's a reaction, I unfreeze it. It's a bit unnerving to see a manufacturer load all kinds of apps and system processes into Android, but NO ONE seem to know what they are or do. IMO, there's a reason why AOSP is so simple; there's no need to muck it up with manufacturer junk that may or may not improve performance.

I opened the DEX file inside and found this chunk of clear text. Definitely monitoring something, but not sure where the info goes. There's a few SQL commands in there so it is interacting with a database somewhere.

Here is the decompiled classes.dex from the MLT apk.

http://www.filedropper.com/mlt

If anyone knows java, maybe they could figure out more about it.

Edit: This thing looks like it's monitoring your phone calls, gps location, and whether or not your phone is rooted.

Default spoke w/VZW tech...

First my wife is throwing a 'mommy's' only pool party here today and I have my 3 daughters so I was doing several things at the same time I was on the phone with VZW so the info I give is probably "off" but I'm gonna try to share what I can.

I just ended an hour long conversation w/VZW tech and he said that my phone, early on, developed a problem being recognized by the network. Now this could be a wrong remembrance of what he said but I can tell you he said that he was seeing things that were big problems with the device. He said this was causing the hardware to work harder than it should increasing the temp on the phone and causing it to cycle. He asked if my touch screen was unresponsive at times causing me to think I had not touched it in the right spot or had not pressed hard enough and "yes" I had been experiencing that exactly. He, at another point in the conversation, suggested using a different battery which I do daily I have 3 of them. He had me pull the SIM card and leave the phone powered down for 1 minute, put the SIM card back in, restart, and dial #832. I did and a voice told me that the call was successful. He called me back and told me that, after pulling the SIM, dialing #832, and restarting that the things he was seeing earlier were all corrected and gone. He stated that the reboots should not happen anymore!

In conclusion he is sending me an email listing additional things to do/reset which I will post a copy of here once I receive it. He said that the heavy wear and tear my device has been having will 'likely' cause problems down the road so he is sending me a warranty replacement on Monday.

I haven't given up on my persuit of trying to figure out the causes for my rebooted but this is helpful. I've tried what you've suggested above and still get the reboots so perhaps I also have a defective device.

So when my unit seems to get bogged down and stalls one of two thing will happen. 1. reboot. 2. the screen "Download mode" pops up and just sits there. I have to do a battery pull. Does anybody else get this? Just wondering if my drivers need to be updated or something.

I get no reboots with stock but the system can get VERY laggy. Also it burns through a battery like crazy on stock so I prefer BO and deal with the rebooting issues.

I get no reboots with stock but the system can get VERY laggy. Also it Burns through a battery like crazy on stock so I prefer BO and deal with the rebooting issues.
Sounds defective to me

Had 2 reboots today, screen stayed black, played the Verizon LTE song and a few minutes later was at the lock screen scanning for media. This was after I pulled the battery and sim for one minute.

Once you replaced the SIM did you power up, dial #832 and hear an automated voice informing you that the call was successful?

First read my response directly above this one (#93) and if you have done that then I would encourage you to call 611, ask to be transferred to tech support, explain to the tech what I have experienced in my conversation with tech support and let them know you are experiencing the same things and see what they find...

Yesterday i had an issue where my phone froze for about 30 seconds, like it commonly does before a reboot. It then went to the black screen that said download mode, and i had to do a battery pull to reset. Haven't been able to reproduce the issue though. I'm running BO3 , and was surfing the internet on 4g using dolphin at the time.

I get that a lot. The cardock icon launches and causes my data to reload, apps to lock up, eventual reboot. I've deleted cardock.apk and it still pops up. Noticed it heating up while playing poker or watching netflix. I just switched to Eclipse this morning. Not sure if I like it or not, but I haven't had that issue yet.

I definitely haven't had any reboot issues with Eclipse (maybe related to the Popcorn kernel?), but I found the battery life wasn't as good as BO.

One of the trends I found with my random reboots was the 'status bar' (SystemUI.apk) doesn't load when the phone soft reboots. Sometimes, it will reload on it's own, but often it doesn't. Now, since this is an LG app or an LG variation (none of my Droids have this app running persistently) I wonder if it has a hand in the rebooting. In any event, the more I experience, the more I see it's the LG crap causing the problems, not the aftermarket (except ADW) or Android framework/apps.

On day 3 w/warranty repaced device rooted stock w/all the same apps/setup and no reboots...I also have a Platinum hard case for my Bionic, I left off the part of the case that encloses the device and I'm using the part w/the belt clip. This keeps the Spec in a completly open setup hopefully this will help keep the temp down. Will keep ya'll updated...

So, I was over on the "other forum" and replied to an overheating thread, and got to thinking and came up with what I think is a reasonable explanation that maybe someone here could add some factual information to it

The random reboots are caused by a specific chip on the board that is overheating.

Now, it could be the CPU, the GPU, or the LTE chipset, does anyone know if our phone is capable of, or does, utilize the GPU to offload heavy CPU tasks?

It makes sense to me, as heat can be caused by anything, even the chip next to the one causing the reboot, as if the heat builds up near the problem, the heat from the chip that causes the reboot will not be able to dissipate properly. Cases could increase the problem, depending how it is constructed., This would cover maps, heavy LTE usage, java code issue, all the random things that prior are doing when the phone reboots, and would not necessarily require the exterior of the phone to be hot.
