Random Reboot causes
I want to start a thread (so I did, as you can obviously see at this point) so we can log possible and confirmed causes for random reboots. I think there are multiple issues at hand, it happens in all LG stock base Rom builds, and obviously is caused by multiple problems, some of which have "solutions" found. Since a lot of people are having this issue (on this forum at least, by "a lot" I am referring to the percentage of people posting saying they have random reboots vs. the percentage of people not saying they have random reboots).
I'll slap a poll on here so we can try to get a better sense of the issue. I will also reserve the second post in the thread for listing causes and any possible solutions for them.

So far the following issues have been reported as causing random reboots:
1. any issue - fixed by reflashing the Rom
2. any issue - fixed by not using Titanium Backup to restore App Data
3. any issue - fixed by not using Rom Toolbox to restore App Data
4. ADW Launcher - fixed by uninstalling
5. installing more than 7 apps at a time - don't do this, some people have problems, some don't (think of it like drinking and driving, it sounds like a good idea at the time...)
6. over heating - fixed by keeping it cool (yes I have put my LG Spectrum in the Freezer)
7. putting phone on metal desk - fixed by uninstalling (freezing too?) carhome.apk

i cant really vote because none of the options apply to me. But My reboots have gone away. Ever since I started reflashing the rom after I get everything setup my reboots cease. I always use TB pro to restore apps with data and I use RTB pro to restore misc. data. For me the reflash works.
I've been on BO 3 for over a week with 0 reboots. And I'm a heavy user. I even have been doing some gaming lately.
Have not resolved mine. Today it was rebooting with damn near opening any app, then it was working fine, it even did a full freeze and I had to pull battery. I still have to try to re-wipe and flash and set it all up again from scratch to see if that resolved it. Been to lazy to do so though. The thing I have noticed though is maps and nav make it reboot very very frequently, also loading anything too fast after a reboot wants to make it reboot again.

dont wipe data yet. Just try flashing the rom again. You'll keep all your apps and settings and it may fix your issue. Always does the trick for me
Tried that a few times, didn't work. Wiped, erased data, dav, ect ect. Gonna start from bare rom and ONLY install and no restores. Will tell ya how it goes.

I got non-stop reboots when I would put my computer on my desk at work. The desk is metal and I am assssssoooooooooming it was because of some magnetism causing the internal magnetic "receptors" to get confused. I got a block of wood (2x4!!!) as a desk cradle. haha, cradle. The bootloop went away.
One day while perusing this forum someone mentioned the carhome.apk. I thought to myself, "self, delete that file."
Oh yeah, I am a dork. Anyway...
I deleted that file and now my phone can be safely placed on my metal desk at work and it no longer bootloops.
Now, I have gotten random reboots also. I have gone for at least 2 weeks now without one until today. The temperature outside is easily 93° and I was on a bicycle ride. I was using 'my tracks' and getting multiple texts. Have you ever texted while riding a bike? WAY harder than driving and texting. hahaha. I got back home and rolled into my garage. It was easily 105° in there. I got a text while standing in the garage. I took my phone out of the handlebar holder and it rebooted.
I would say with my most uneducated brain that I had a heat related reboot.

I am in the same boat kind of. Since i bought my phone in January i have had 2 reboots i think. Both while using the messaging app.
Something else i was thinking was where everybody got their phone from. If there is any pattern there. I personally got mine from the local verizon store. I know there are a few people who got theirs online from costco and such for next to nothing. Just curious if there is something to it, defect devices or something to that nature.
I have mentioned before, but I get a reboot everytime I shut down Wifi tether. I've changed settings and it doesn't help. I have un installed and reinstalled. I'm on 3.0.

this past weekend I did a reinstall of my EvenLess super bloated 3.0 Rom (EvenLess version of BO 3.0 plus all my apps! comes in at 875MB right now, zipped!) I had my normal "random" reboot (1) about 2 minutes after the first bootup, another random reboot (2) after I added my Google account, another random reboot (3) while the play market was updating 21 apps, another random reboot (4) while amazon was updating 7 apps (I swear I added the newest versions backed up by rom toolbox before flashing...), which started while there were still a couple left in the play market to update. Then I had another random reboot (5) while the play market was finishing, but after amazon finished. I had yet another random reboot (6) a few minutes after all the updates had finished, I was already in bed and had the phone laying next to me. Then I started logging in to things, I got my Google voice account added, opened Titanium backup to trigger the Pro version, same with Fancy Widgets, then I imported my fancy widgets settings (from within the app) and got a random reboot (7). I think I had one more random reboot (8) while I was setting up some other things. Then I went to sleep.
I finished setting things up the next morning and had another random reboot (9) almost as soon as I turned the screen on, this one locked up the screen about 10 seconds before restarting. Then I did not have another one until this afternoon.almost 3 full days good (I did not restore anything with titanium or rom toolbox).
This after noon I had three all within 20 minutes or so, I was on the phone with verizon for 47 minutes dealing with a disappearing account credit on my old verizon account, within 2 seconds of pressing "end" to hang up at the end of the call, the phone rebooted (10), it was at about 39% battery. When it came back up I unlocked it to send a text via google voice to my wife (I don't have messaging on my plan, saves $30, or $10 for 1k), I noticed Lookout mobile started an app scan on my phone, and it rebooted as soon as the google voice inbox screen came up, well almost came up... it looked like a 3D image from a comic book in the 80's, everything was shifted about 3-5 pixels down and to the right and I swear I saw one set was red and the other green...then 10 seconds later, was random reboot (11). After that I just gave up and put my phone on my desk and went back to work for about 5 minutes and I decided I wanted to run aLogcat and take a look. I clicked download on aLogCat in the play market and the phone instantly rebooted (12)... not happy I was... hmmm?
When it came back up I got aLogCat installed and opened it, I exported the file and then cleared it. I took a look and I can see somethings but really have no idea what any of it was, I was very disappointed that there were no time stamps.
anyone that is interested can view it from here: http:joelperryproductions.com/spectrum/logcats/
there is also a 2nd log, but the first was exported, then I cleared the log almost immediately after I installed aLogCat (I don't know if the logs evaporate if some logcat proggy is not installed, so I don't know if there is anything useful in it.) I saw a couple of SQlite disk IO errors, but not much else of use to me.

any ideas on how to edit the poll options? I'd be happy to change the options to first person, and add #5 "I've had random reboots, but not in a long time"
also, I ordered mine (this one anyway) from NewEgg the second week in march.

finndo77, maybe it's your slimmed down versions that are causing your reboots. or you have a defective phone. Run stock for a few days and see if you get all them reboots. If you are then you have a defective phone. Get a replacement. Obviously there are tons of us that are not having these issues so something isnt right.

I tried not modifying with stock, eclipse, broken out 1-1.3, had similar issues with all of them. It seems that the longer I use the phone without reflashing, the less I have reboots. As I said, it is mostly the first 24 hours or less then no reboots for days. On Broken Out 2 I went almost two weeks without any restarts, random or intentional. The v6 stock rooted was far far worse, it rebooted almost twice an hour all day. For the two days before I went back to Broken Out.
It could be the phone, this is my third LG Spectrum...
I uninstalled ADW EX and that reduced my seemingly random reboots by about 95%.
I still get the occasional reboot, but it is usually when my phone is trying to do too many things at once. As an example: this morning I opened Pulse news reader and while I had it reloading all of my feeds I tried opening an old article. After a few seconds of a black screen, the phone rebooted. My fault.
By and large, the reboots are gone now that I'm no longer running ADW EX. I'm disappointed I purchased it. And once I'm using ICS, I'll probably never use it again because I'll most likely end up on Apex or Nova. Bummer.

How did you go about deleting cardock? I used ROM toolbox earlier today and thought I had killed it, UNTIL I opened tapatalk just now (5 mins ago). The icon piped up again, causing my keyboard to close and eventually tapatalk to fc. Boo. Do I need to get root browser again and delete it that way? If so where is it located?

I use Root Explorer. In the settings, you have to check the 'Up to Root' box. This allows you to get to the top level folder (root folder). Inside the /system/app/ folder you will see the CarHome.apk

Mmmyep. Deleting adw isn't necessary but keeping it from running will stop reboots.
Well to throw another data point in the mix, I tried a couple of things I've read in the other threads.
First I reflashed BO 3.0, then I moved the CPU to 1.8 and conservative. So far after flogging the phone with maps and games, no reboots, and battery life has improved.

Delete!
Went to the folder, it's gone. I must have deleted it with ROM toolbox. Strange that it continues to pop up. I've only noticed it when I use a keyboard on dolphin browser, sms, and tapatalk. Probably others as well because I've randomly had the screen flicker and the flash of a keyboard while playing games. I'll just flash it again like everybody else.
It will generate a new one when the phone reboots so its easy to fell what caused the problem. Finndo77;4526303 I'll check out your logs and see if anything pops out.
Custom launchers seem to be the theme for me. Removing them has made a difference, but there are still occasional reboots occurring.
Also, I notice custom keyboards may be a culprit as well. Swype with the error tolerance increased and split keyboard with some customizations seem to bog the phone down occasionally and I'll get a reboot. I noticed it with the stock ROM, Broken Out, and Nitro's version 0.2.
Nitro did mention something vague about removing GoLauncher from 0.2 due to some reboot issue. Has anyone seen more detail on that?
its not the apps or rom thats making it reboot its the kernel. cus i was on stock with root with stock kernel, i didnt get any reboots what so ever. then i flash blitz kernel, then couple days later it started to reboot, so i flash the popcorn kernel, same thing it reboots

Try FTL or Zeam. I use SwiftKey on all my phones, so that's not going to change, but since I stopped using ADW and went to FTL, I had zero random reboots. I had reboots from apps throwing errors, but not the random ones. FTL tossed a random the other night, so I switched to Zeam and haven't had one since. It's not as customizable (using icons/themse from ADW packs), but it's a small RAM footprint.

Sorry, that's just not true. Some of us have been using this phone and modded roms since day 1, used the 2 kernels other than stock and still encountered reboots. The root-cause analysis so far points to apps not working well will the phone's version of Android and/or the data the app saves when backed up. Restoring app data through Titanium or Rom Toolbox will almost certainly cause reboots, for whatever reason.

Just a thought, could it be caused by the system files having different names than every other phone?
And this causing app issues on developers who have hard coded system file names and or locations of the files. Which may be something that a root required app would do (explaining the issues with rtb and titanium)

well i have been on stock root every since i bought the phone and i have not had any reboots
Good for you. That hardly is a definite affirmation that the kernel is to blame, since you haven't even tried other roms/configurations.
Yes I have not tried the other rooms but when I flashed the blitz kernel and popcorn kernel I started to get the reboots. This never happened to me with stock kernel

I actually found less issues and reboots with the Blitzkrieg kernel. I think it's more about the configuration... Popcorn didn't work well with BrokenOut for me, but did with eclipse.
Most of the random reboots I have experienced are caused when carrying my phone in my hand along with my iPad. I finally thought about it and assumed that the magnets in the smart cover where somehow causing the issue. I tested this and confirmed the cause. When the phone is asleep, putting it next to the iPad magnets will cause a reboot. If it's awake the car mode will activate. After reading this thread I have frozen carhome.apk with TB Pro. I will do some testing over the next few days and report back if my issue has been resolved. I also believe WiFi Tether is occasionally causing some of the reboots.

So finally got some time to go back to BO and have installed kyrologcat on the device. I think I've got a text file with a reboot but not sure where to go from here. Still getting reboots but only when I the processing on this thing. Any help?

Sim sync error. So it should save those logs in the folder on your sd card... Check to see if it's there. That screenshot doesn't quite say what triggered the call for the sim card.

Wow, I went over that logcat you sent me. Your phone is CONSTANTLY working/running, which is weird and there are a ton of database errors.
You have a reoccurring database error "android.database.sqlite.SQLiteException" and the LG MLT app seems to be throwing some errors. What's concerning is NO ONE on the interwebs seems to know what this damn app does. It appears to be a system monitor app, so it *could* be frozen. But please note, I don't know if freezing that app will lead to other issues (like when you freeze 'messaging', you can't send mms); if you start to see adverse reactions, unfreeze it.

Yeah I was thinking there was something screwy going on. Thanks for the help. The sqlite data error seem to be the biggest one sending errors. Not sure how to deal with that...ill try to freeze that app though. To fix ALL of this I'm thinking I may need to go back to v4 update to v6 and then try BO. I think one of the problems is all that working is causing my phone to overheat and then reboot. Im sitting over here wih a bag of ice kn thia thing to bea able to write this without a reboot. Lol. Quite the mess.
When v6 first came out I wasn't getting thy download so I called Verizon and they pushed a sim card update to my phone but I still couldn't update. I finally had to go through lgs download onmy computer to update my phone to v6. A lot of work on this little Guy.
Started I from a re flash and fresh BO and still getting the same errors as before. I guess it's off to flashing back to v4 to v6 and trying again. Otherwise I can think it must be the Sim card.

Have either of you tried to go to stock v4,wipe data, cache and dalvik and then flash BO3?
I'm on BO3 and haven't encountered those issues, but I came from v4. Actually, I think I came from Eclipse, but that doesn't matter since I wipe data and cache before flashing.
Haven't Mr B.That was my next steps though. No other options left. Reflashed BO so many times I can't count. I'll need to pit aside some time to so that though. Limping by on this for now. I'll let I know what I find out. If that doesn't work it's the Sim or the phone hardware.

Ditto on the SQlite errors, and the log cat goes bonkers non stop never pausing.
Several of my log cats can be found here:
Joelperryproductions.com/spectrum/logcats
If I catch the reboot, I save a logcat as soon as the phone is back up, so the cause should be near the end of each file, with the build up to the issue coming before it.
I would not be surprised if my messaging with the Rom caused most of the reboots.
