Default Johnny Manziel wins Heisman

Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel became the first freshman to win the Heisman Trophy. Well deserving, congratulations to Johnny Football!

There is absolutely NO reason to give that award to a Freshman. The "Johnny Football" hype took over like a snowball rolling downhill.

Do you want to know why Manziel won? Not because of the "Johnny Football" hype but because he earned the Heisman. Every player in each class is eligible for the Heisman trophy and he happened to be the best of the best, as a Freshman. Which is one heckuva accomplishment from a Freshman athlete. I've seen many people bashing Manziel here recently and I believe he deserves more respect than he has been given. Can you elaborate more and tell me why a Freshman doesn't deserve the Heisman. You probably could argue that a Senior athlete is more deserving. Can I take a wild guess on who you wanted to win Heisman? Does he play for Notre Dame?

Sure i would have liked to see Te'o win the Heisman, but no Defensive player has ever won it. I figured that it would be a long shot, at best. A freshman hasn't paid enough dues to get that trophy, no matter what school he goes to. What does he shoot for next year? What happens if he breaks his leg, and never plays again? I believe that it's more about the "Johnny Football" hype. The Aggies spent a lot of money promoting that guy, and it paid off, that's all. That award is usually given to a Quarterback, or a Running Back because they are the flashiest players on the team.

Keep in mind that I wasn't trying to attack you in anyway, just was wondering why you didn't like the fact that a Freshman won the Heisman. I respect Manziel to the fullest and a Freshman deserves the award just as well as a Senior does. Every player is equal, no matter the class. If some type of injury should occur next season or after that would be devastating, but it wouldn't change his stats of this season or how he won the Heisman. Look at it this way, he is the 2102 Heisman Trophy winner. There's nothing else more to say...

I watched the Alabama - TA&M game, and he is for real. The Heisman is a single season award there is no reason a freshman can't win it, if he did what is necessary to win it.

O.K. I do respect everyone's opinion on this subject, but just ask yourself this question. Why hasn't any other Freshman ever won the Heisman? There have been great players who have won it as a Junior or Senior, and they had outstanding credentials as a Freshman. I believe that it should be a compellation of their "body of work", as a football player. You do a great job in your Freshman year, and you are noticed and talked about going into your Sophomore year. If you continue the great playing, then the sports writers realize that you are not a fluke, and your name goes in for consideration. If this rule is not applied, then someone could "steal" the trophy, with constant pressure from that person's school. A good example, although he wasn't a freshman, is Doug Flutie. A "Hail Mary" pass completion, a Heisman Trophy for him, and his coach gets a job in the NFL. The "fighting Irish school" wasn't Notre Dame, it was Boston College. That's my opinion, and i'm sticking with it.

And you're entitled to your own opinion.

Below (click the link) is a look back at 10 Freshmen before Manziel who were most deserving of the stiff-arm statue as a Freshman.

That just proves my point. If any of those ten where deserving of getting the statue, why didn't they? Answer...Because they were FRESHMEN. The old unwritten rule was broken this year, because of HYPE. The term "Johnny Football" got inside lots of peoples heads.

Exactly, I understood what point you were trying to prove. You have got to understand that a Freshman QB threw over 3,419 yards this 2102 season. Doesn't that fact itself deserve all the "hype" . He earned his name "Johnny Football" as well as the Heisman trophy.

Sorry, not to me. He could be called Johnny Anything, and as a Freshman, he should not have gotten it.

Next year will be a down year for him. Don't look for anywhere close to the numbers he put up this year next season. Ta&m s losing a lot of key players. Also other teams have a full year of film on him and will come up with schemes to shut him down. He won the Heisman for one reason, they beat bama. It's funny that LSU beat a&m in college station yet a&m gets the cotton bowl and LSU gets stuck with the Capital One bowl. :what:

I'm waiting for Friday, when the Aggies play Okla. in the Cotton Bowl. Let's see if "Johnny Football" can beat the Sooners like Notre Dame did.
