If your talking about the Modaco kitchen i made one from myself but thanks bud. What do you think of it. Madaco to me is better. Also fyi you can theme the bottom bar and lockscreen.
I get :
$ adb push 2.0-update-heroc-modacocustomcustomrom-signed.img /sdcard
adb push 2.0-update-heroc-modacocustomcustomrom-signed.img /sdcard
adb: permission denied
what am i doing wrong?
Make sure you have administrative privilege on the command module. on vista you click start then on the search box write cmd then wait for it to appear dont press enter. when it appears right click it and click run as administrator. Also make for sure your rooted by going to the market and type root in the search. Find a app that needs root and if you can run it your rooted. This is just to test. If you can't you did not root properly.

Has anyone found a way to mount the Micro SD card automatically when connected to USB? You could on the G1 and I hate the fact that google took this away.

Installed custom boot screen, lock screen and removed/installed Stock Apps. Thanks to everyone who has contributed information on rooting and developing all this wonderful stuff for our Hero

Well I'm still a bit jealous of all you rooted people who obviously know how to do it. I am just gonna have to wait for the update, if it comes. Not a big deal though as I truly adore my device. I do have one question though. Would it be wise to try and root if your device hangs on the htc logo when trying to go to the boot screen? Does this only make a difference if your trying to root using the Flash method? Is this necessary if trying to root the long way?
I am curious, when you say it can not find the specified path, what step you are on.
The guide that I posted worked for me, and I had the same firmware you said you are running, it is not patched. If you tried the one that I listed, can you tell me where exactly you get stuck? I might have an idea of what is going wrong.

Well, I have pretty much given up on trying to root. I have tried so many of the mentioned methods. I am trying to be content with what I have I just wanted to uninstall some unnecessary apps. It seems after reading so much on this that if I do this in order to get the latest promised update I may have to reinstall those apps. If that's so than never mind. I was just wondering about the boot screen being needed to root since mine hangs on the htc logo. But thank you any way for your offered help.
So I have my HTC Hero and have been thinking about it all week and now I am ready to root my phone, Still not sure it will all turn out rite but am hoping for more space (remove pointless app) and gain a little speed.
But can not find a the HTC Sync folder on my SD card when I mount my phone?
Any ideas would be nice, And if you know of a better way to root the Hero I would like any input.
I also have a few questions.
1.When the Hero gets the 2.1 update will I be able to update with out a problem if I install a custom rom?
2.If I install a custom rom will I have to reinstall all the programs I have on there now? (Will I lose everything on the phone {app/text/email/login info})
Well again thanks, Sorry that I am asking question that I know must have been asked before, I am still very new to android. (Moved from having Palm for years Treo,600,650,700p,centro) So still getting use the the new OS.
When I tried to download the recovery image it prompted me to burn it to a disk. Please help? Is the recovery image necessary? I did not finish rooting my phone yesterday because I was worried about this.
Hi, I'm very new at this and I don't understand how to use pre kitchen. Do I download the file and than transfer the files to my hero? How does it work?
If you are using the pre-kitchen, it is simple. Download it, get the fix for auto root, then run the program on your computer. Make sure your phone is attached via the usb cable. I suggest hitting help and allowing it to run a diagnostic to see if all is capable.
Make sure you have the correct drivers installed for your phone, either by installing HTC Sync or pdaNet. Both have drivers that will work.
After running the diagnostic on pre-kitchen, then hit the auto root button. You will get messages telling you what to do/what will happen next. Read everything and do as it says.
I tried the pre-kitchen, but it didn't work for me (I am running Windows 7 64 bit). It worked up to a point, but after it pushed the image, I got the out of memory error. Therefore, I just picked up where it left off following the instructions posted on the xda forums. All went well
As for the person who asked about burning the image, no offense, but you need to read more on what is involved in rooting (you do not need to burn the recovery image). Also trying using the search function. Many people have taken the time to write up detailed instructions on what to do, all you have to do is take the time to research and read them.
If you would like links, I would say look above in the post I made, as it has all the necessary information on what you need to do to root your phone.
Thanks for replying I have searched through several threads and could not find anything about the issue I was having with the recovery image. Those links would be much appreciated
I have little to no exp with rooting or android... I went to the unlocker.com and searched Root sprint hero. followed the video and written directions, and viola!! I'm rooted. the entire process took about 15minutes (I took my time dbl chking every step). I'm inspired to learn some developing now!! I got the tehter app up and running. If you have not rooted your phone and you own a laptop this is a MUST HAVE!! If for no other reason this is why you should Root your Android!!
If anyone has any beginner developer info I'm all ears!!
it works wth the 1.56. you have to go to the link for rooting the sprint htc hero. watch the video and then read the directions. i watched the video twice then read the directions a couple of times, followed them to the letter dbl checking the whole way and VIOLA!! Root!!
ok now does it matter if is not a brand new sd card ? or do i have to erase everything in it. oh also how about the phone itself did you wiped it to factory reset? pleas tell me as much as you can because i'm plunging in. one more thing this only gives you root access i have to find how to do apps to sd and find a rom?
sorry it took solong to reply. you will need to format your sd card. you don't have to wipe your phone bc you will be building a flash image of it (but I wiped mine to start from scratch). It was cool getting rid of all those useless apps that i downloaded anyway. also there is a link for a suggested ROM called MoDaCo. I have this one. It seems faster. I'll be looking for more later though. Good luck! Let me know how you end up.

anyhow, i removed it. Ever since removing a bunch of useless apps from my phone, my hero been responding better, no lags and what so ever.
Another thing I want to know is, when rooting your phone and sprint gives you a new update for the OS. Wouldn't that update all the apps again or the update wouldn't go through all the way?
I ditched Sprint TV, my wife couldn't live without it, and yes I "think" I will need it, but let's cut the crap. I'm not watching tv on my 2 inch screen when I am never more than a day away from my 55" 120 htz LCD.

In addition to what DFresh said, if you're running kitchen on your PC, you can download an apk file for anything and put it into any folder.
For example, I found "Clear widgetS" from an outside source, downloaded and then created my own "theme" folder in kitchen for items I found outside the standard download. Then I run kitchen, click "install a theme" and locate the apk, click install. I have installed apps this was too, but it could cause trouble depending on the app.
It would appear I have rooted the phone, went out to the app store and down loaded terminal emulator, entered in su was returned with the # prompt.
Going through the steps, I receive the following:
/data/local/asroot2 /system/bin/sh
[+] Using newer pipe_inode_info layout
Opening: /proc/857/fd/3
SUCCESS: Enjoy the shell.

When following the steps to copy the *.img to my sdcard on my phone, I also get the "Permission Denied."
adb push recovery-RA-heroc-v1.2.3.img /sdcard/failed to copy 'recovery-RA-heroc-v1.2.3.img' to '/sdcard/recovery-RA-heroc-v1.2
.3.img': Permission denied
I amusing Windows XP and DID verify the cmd window is being run by the local administrator.
I have even tried using pre-kitchen .02b no luck. Any ideas?
1.Is there anything like phone settings, that I should have set a certain way before attempting to root my phone?
2. Also, I'm using windows vista, will this affect anything I dowload on my laptop to root my phone? Or does that not even matter?
3. What exactly is the auto-rooter? Do I download one program and it does all the work for me?
4. Do I need more than one download to root my phone? It seems there are a few downloads to complete the root, but then again I am totally new to all of this.
5. When I root my phone, can I still get sprint updates?
