All you had to do was look at post #4 in this thread for a good place to start. If you have questions after looking at the instructions, then go ahead and ask.

The way you phrased it, it sounded like you didn't even look at the link, and I think that's what Kenny was talking about when he said "look around".

Just wanted to say thank you to the original reply with the tut link. Worked fantastic. Figured it out in under 10 minutes. Finishing my Nandroid backup now.

You posted you're "I don't know where to start" post in a thread which was less then one page long, which had a walk through posted on the 4th post! Did you seriously even read the thread or did you just click and post? Top of this sub forum has a sticky stating the "Sprint Hero has been Rooted!!". Probably lots of links to steps and guides in that thread.

The above makes me wonder if you are capable of finding information on your own, digesting and comprehending the information in front of you. If it's difficult for you to know where to start when it's right in front of you, how difficult will it be for you to fix something when it goes wrong. Things will go wrong, clearly that's evident in this thread is it not?

Your defensive posturing to my first post shows me that you can't take constructive criticism. I offered some sound advice and you chose to ignore it and assume that I was telling you that "you were not allowed to ask questions". You asked a question and I gave you an answer. My apology that it wasn't the coddling you desired.

I am sure this all seems very harsh to you. It is harsh - don't take it personally - because it needs to be. It's not going to be very fun for you when you trash your phone. It's not going to be very fun for you when something goes wrong and your forum post is not answered for days.

Pretend you are my client - you bring me your laptop to me to be repaired. I take the laptop back to my work bench and stare at it for a few moments. I've never worked on this brand before - I don't know how to disassemble it. I bring it back to you and say "I don't know how to disassemble this laptop, I don't even know where to start." As a client how much faith would that give you in me?

I'm just going to say that was the most well thought out rant on that subject. +1 to kennyidaho for telling it like it is. Read before you post, friends.

BTW, walkthrough in the 4th post had me a Fresh ROM, working device in under 30 minutes.

I did this all last night (from the Geek for 4 walkthru). Had a couple of stumbles but this thread helped me figure it out. Thanks! Phone seems less laggy in the 5 minutes I've used it so far. I thought I'd mention a couple of area that confused me, might help some others.

1. I did not have the USB-drivers folder in my C:\android-sdk-windows folder. When i did step 5 and 6, I couldn't find it and went on a bit of a wild goose chase since it was giving me the https error. I went into options on the SDK and enable the first option (something about forcing-sorry I'm not on my xp machine). Then it reloads the list of software available and drivers is one of them. Installed that. Then recopied the asroot2.zip to the tools. Don't know if that was necessary.

2. Previously when I had gotten to the second line of commands to enter on the command prompt it had said that there was an error about not finding the device. I thought it had something to do with never having synced my hero with my pc so I downloaded the app from htc.com onto my pc. Strangely, it wasn't on my sd card like the manual said it should. Did a trial sync and then the rest of the install worked great from there. Not sure if that was fixed due to the usb-driver folder being installed or syncing the phone once.

Thanks to everyone for the responses/help.

I had never synced my hero up to my pc

Reading through this, it doesn't seem too difficult, but I don't understand what is gained by doing this.

I can't find any youtubes about how the rom looks or acts. Is it that much faster? I don't really have much lag on my phone as it is so I am not sure what I would gain by rooting or loading someone elses rom.

What am I missing?

Just rooted mine on Friday. Only 2 things I like are the increased speed and WiFi tethering. Other thank that not sure what the other benefits are.
