info on evo vs hero and rooted?
Im wondering about getting an evo. I currently have an htc hero cdma and its rooted and running gingerbread. Its laggy a lot with force closes. Im thinking about getting an evo but im wondering if its much better? And also if i do get a hero is it worth it to install gingerbread or is it already up to date with the newest android version.
To any evo owners how is it overall? Like battery length, phone durrability, speed and laggyness?
What nightly version of AOSP Android 2.3 are you running? The latest builds are astoundingly fast and snappy to use. AOSP has done a great job in stripping it down to a nearly vanilla Android 2.3 experience. The benefit, as stated above, is speed, efficiency, and a clean slate to add your own launcher and customizations.
I am no Sprint HTC EVO 4G owner, so I cannot comment on its battery life, but I assume the durability is good as my Sprint HTC Hero has been very durable. Honestly, if I were you, I would wait for the newer handsets coming out, like the Sprint HTC EVO 3D and the Google Nexus S 4G.

Im running aospCMod-20110310 and adw launcher is always going blank and fc. Im always needing to take out my battery and reboot. Is this better in the nightlies? If so where do i find the newest up to date nightlies at?
And when does the new evo come out and in what ways is it better than the first?

I believe the Sprint HTC EVO 3D will be out in the Summer time. There is no exact date set yet.

You should be able to get away with just wiping cache, then going into Advanced and wiping Dalvik cache, and finally going into Mounts and Storage (or Partitions) and formatting cache. After you do that, just flash the new ROM over top of the old one followed by the new GApps.
Follow the above instructions and you should retain all of your data. If you run into issues you will likely have to do a full wipe and flash the ROM and GApps again. Oh, and make sure you do a Nandroid backup before you attempt any of this. Cheers.

Download the latest aosp and run LauncherPro which seems to work much better and is a lot faster IMO instead of ADW.
As for the EVO, I was going to get that for my wife but when we saw the EVO and the EPIC 4G side by side, me and my wife felt that the EPIC was way better. The display was soo crisp and bright! Plus it just performed better with some of the games that we were able to play on both sets. My sister has the EVO and her husband has the EPIC. I got the EPIC for her and she loves it. Now I got her Hero and have been toying around with it.
evo3d will not only have more under the hood 1.2ghz Snapdragon Dual core - Put will also have the BEST screen to date....I am holding out for that....
I hope you are right about the screen!! I really wanted to pick up the EVO for myself but was very disappointing with the display quality when compared to the EPIC. So I just got my wife a new phone because she hated (and that's being nice) the Hero!!

this is a link to a one version download of honeycomb. first off is the hero capable of running honeycomb at a stable rate. or should i stick with gingerbread. and second where are the nightlies if this isnt the right place, or does this page update daily?

Haha. Who said that this had anything to do with Honeycomb? The 'HC' in the file stands for "HeroC" as in Sprint HTC Hero. You know, the CDMA one.
That thread is updated by DonB whenever a new update is released. The AOSP Android 2.3 "nightlies" are not always nightly per se. There may be a few days in between releases. I hope this helps.

not to hate on aosp but i would use his rom aswell and would always get bootloops and forcecloses and got tired of it and started using the nightlies from cyanogenmod 7 and it stopped, im currently running the CM7 RC4 and its working great for me, no problems what so ever, you should give it a try and if you don't like it then you can always just nandroid back

Weird. I never get boot loops or force closes. The AOSP ROMs have been quite reliable thus far. I guess it is different for everyone.
Did you fully wipe your handset before flashing the ROM and GApps? That can have a huge effect on how well it performs and how reliable it is in the long run.

yup did the whole nine yards before flashing roms and still got the FC's and BL's....i guess its true when they say everyone's device responds differently to roms....all is well tho, im happy with CM7 RC4

Yeah. As long as something works out for you and it does not kill your love for rooting and customizing.
I might give CyanogenMod 7 RC4 a try this weekend. We shall see.

my love for rooting and customization will never end lol.....I've been due for an upgraded phone from sprint since November but haven't done it since im still happy with my hero since i learned about rooting and Roms

Well im very confused with what ones are aosp and what ones are cm. Like where they come from and what ones are different.
And also is the newest one out from the link above still 03/26? Because i keep going back and thats still the one its showing but someone had said update soon

The ones is the huge thread that is updated by DonB are AOSP Android 2.3 ROMs. CyanogenMod 7 ROMs have an official thread on these forums, but hardly anyone ever looks at it.
That is not to say that people do not use the CyanogenMod 7 ROM. Quite a few people do and most seem to like it for the extra settings.
Who cares if it's stable or not, nandroid, flash it, nandroid back if there's an issue
Is it just me, or are you only replying to some of my posts to jeer at me about my cautiousness these days? To be honest, it is getting kind of old.
I do not see the harm in asking someone their opinion about something mentioned in the thread. I am fully aware that I can Nandroid back, but sometimes I like getting the opinion of someone else who has already tried it before I waste my time on it, especially if they have gleaned a couple of useful nuggets of information that could potentially aid me as I try it out.

Truer words have never been spoken and I agree with your sentiment. I have been a bit cautious lately, but it is mostly due to a hectic work schedule and a dearth of time to monkey around with my handset.
In time, things will slow down again and I will be back to taking the plunge quickly. Either way, more knowledge is always good whether one plans on trying it out themselves or if they want to hear someone's experiences beforehand.
