Exclamation HTC Hero Touch Screen problems

Hi, just starting last night, I am having issues with the touch screen. I touch the notification bar, and it does not come down. I can select the button at the button, and then touch notifications and it will come down. Then while I am doing something, a few minutes later, the notification bar finally comes down. Sometimes when I click on the clock - the notification bar opens.... and my "p" will not work unless I tilt the phone sideways.

Also, it seems I have to press harder (not too hard of course) to bring up applications.

Whats going on? I hope someone can help me. I have already tried to reboot several times. I took the battery out for a few minutes even.

Sounds like you need to re-calibrate or reset calibration on your screen.

Settings > Locale & Text > Touch Input > Text Input
you'll find both things i'm talking about in there

If this does not help you are possibly having a problem with your screen. Just in case you didn't know these screens are only responsive to your skin or something that can pass a current. The screen is not pressure sensitive at all as far as I understand.

Yea, I know it's just touch sensitive, which is why I was wondering why it seemed me to want to keep my finger on it for so long before it opened. I am trying to do the calibration, but it won't let me hit the keys. The red box just sits around it.

Something must be wrong with your device...

I would take in to sprint or best buy wherever you got it from and see if they will exchange it.

Even if you touch it though the drag bar appears so that you can pull it down the rest of the way... But you are right, it won't pull down just by touching it. You have to make a downward sweep from the top to pull it down.

Yep, and I'm dragging and dragging. The weird thing is... it will finally drop down like a few minutes later. It's like there is a lag or something. Sometimes I can delete notifications by touching the x, other times I can't. Sometimes that letter p will work, other times no. Sometimes I can open my twitter box, the other times no.

On a side note does anyone have any issues with the screen not being as responsive when it's cold?

You should make sure that you have a process management app installed like 'advanced task killer' to quit background processes. The fact that HTC doesn't include a similar utility or even inform the user about this is a major usability problem. People like my parents would never figure out why their phone's performance is horrible.

I've had issues with my Hero's touch screen also. The screen occasionally will register every touch as a click, but when I am holding firmly and trying to drag. Restarting seems to fix, but is extremely annoying and is happening somewhat regularly. Another of many bugs...

Or not. Someone needs to check out the sticky at the top of the forum as well as the numerous other threads regarding this topic.

I just returned from Sprint-Nextel where they replaced my touch screen for exactly this problem. Apparently the screen loses its elasticity (it sags) enough to make it insensitive around the edges. Took about 20 minutes and it is faster than new!

No, not in my case. This weekend I had it with me on two bike rides in my back jersey pocket in a BodyGlove cell phone pouch. The temp was in the lower 20s both days and one ride was 1 1/2 hours long in that temp.
I was running the sportstrack app to track my ride. When I finished, pulled the Hero out of my jersey pocket, then out of of the pouch and was able to bring up the app and click 'finish' no problem (except my fingers were freezing cold!)
Came right inside and watched my tracked ride on google maps, selecting different things and the Hero didn't miss a beat. Long term or repeated exposure over time may have an affect perhaps.

I had a similar problem -- ended up getting it swapped out for a new one at HTC's suggestion.

Default Screen Issues

Having similar issues.

Phone not responding. So laggy. Seems like I need to press hard or hold long.

I did the reset and all touch screen functions ceased to work.

PDF viewer was zooming in and out by itself. Can't zoom in on documents.

The next day screen started to intermittently work.

Later this evening. Started working better.

Now works...

Feels like a lemon... and cautious about it continuing to work...

@Mariio - that's normal - that's what it means to reset it back to factory defaults.

I'm posting brining this thread back from the dead because I'm having the exact same issue and am looking for some assistance from those who have gotten their phones fixed.

I'm rooted and have a custom ROM flashed.

I just got home from the local Sprint store and they gave me a line of BS about how they can't work on the screen because the phone software has been altered.

I find this incredibly annoying considering there is absolutely no link between A) the dust under the screen B) the touch screen going dead in parts and the software. If the entire screen would go dead, I could get it, but it still registers touch, but like others here, I have to press very firm and/or do a complete reboot in order to get it to work properly.

So my question is this: who has managed to get their phones fixed by Sprint? Did they state that it's a known issue? What exactly did they state as the known issue? Does anyone know about any documentation out there in the interwebz anywhere that might talk about this 'known issue'?

With cars, if you were to...say...put an exhaust on a car, then end up with electrical problems a year down the road, there are laws in place that prevent dealerships from claiming that they won't touch the car due to a voided warranty from the exhaust. Is there no such consumer protection in place in this instance?

Default Superglue can interfere with screen

Hi,

I found this thread through a google search because I was trying to troubleshoot screen problems on my hero. I noticed the comment that the screen is sensitive to electrical charges on your fingertips and remembered that I had been using superglue this afternoon and got some on my fingertip. Went back to the phone -- the screen worked just fine with my little finger, but not my index finger (the one that had glue on it).

Thanks for your info!!!

Hi All,

Looks like, I am not the only one facing this problem though quite new to it. It just started 3 days back and very annoying since then, phone works and not works. It doesnt recognize the touch location e.g. I touch in the middle of the screen and screen bottom buttons 'Applications-Phone' are clicked. I cant type properly. I had to press hard. Turning screen off and turning on sometimes helps but thats not valid all the times. Surely, it is the most annoying thing I am facing on it even worst than waiting for 2.1 upgrade..So far all the searches resulted in no solution :-( really looking forward to hear from you all.

Returning the phone is not an option. I didnt buy from Canada. I had it from mid-east and carrying it since last year so need to find a fix.

Thanks for helping. off course, there will be a solution. I trust so many genious brains out here ;-)

Do you have a SPRINT HTC Hero (CDMA)? Does your phone say Sprint on the front? You mention having bought the phone in the mid east, and not Canada...

We can get you the best help if we know exactly what phone you have.

My mistake, I have Hero GSM and not CDMA. I didn't realize I have posted question in the Sprint CDMA thread. But will be glad to know if something works out for anyone of you to test if GSM has similar solution.

Thanks.

You can try : Main menu>Settings >Touch Input>Text Input>Calibration tool then follow directiions.
If doesn't help try: Main menu>Language & keyboard >Touch input>Text input >Reset Calibration (reset).
If that Main menu> Settings >Sound & Display>G sensor calibration then put on a level flat surface and reset.
If those things don't work then I don't know,maybe a hard reset,but I doubt that will help.

my htc is refurbished and i bought it online from the sprint store.. but i dont know if that has anything to do with this problem? also i noticed that theres a small plastic under the screen... and at first i thought that was causing the problem until i read this article

How long have you had it? Is the warranty still in effect? Sounds like you need to contact Sprint and get a replacement phone.

I can't turn off the hepatic feedback. I hate the vibrating when I touch the keypad. I just updated to 2.1 last week. I think I may have made a mistake.

hmm maybe you need a new touch screen, once I had an iphone and the bottom portion of the touchscreen didn't respond, I swapped the screen and it works great. The other thing that could be wrong with it, is that the flex cable some how got disconnected (maybe just a portion of it) try reconnecting it and then it might work. You can get a touch screen at durapowerglobal they have good prices and products.

Hi PiaNqa!

Have you tried resetting the handset a.k.a. a factory reset? You will lose any data such as contacts, emails, SMS etc and will have to reconfigure the handset and reinstall apps afterwards, but this has fixed similar problems for several members in the GSM HTC Hero section.

Default Screen non-resoposnive

Simply go to - Setting - Language & Keyboard - Touch Input - Text input - go to the bottom of screen and do a factory rest calibration than do new calibration. This is for HTC Hero. It should fix the problem. This way you don't loose any of your data either. It worked for me.

Cry HTC Hero glitches

Got the same problem, about a week ago the touch screen started to glitch sometimes. For example, I'm browsing a web page in the Dolphin HD browser. I try to scroll the page down, but instead it zooms in and out. Or the bottom of the screen becomes absolutely unresponsive, so I can't type text or open the Phone menu. Then this could be solved for some time by simply turning the screen off for 5 seconds. I've done the factory reset and for a couple of days it just worked perfectly. But now it's an absolute mess! Not only does the touch screen produce touch events on its own, but the phone completely glitches: hardware buttons don't do what they should do, the launcher starts to zoom in and out on its own, and so on and so on. Now this doesn't seem like a touch screen issue.. Anyone with same troubles?

Not only does the touch screen produce touch events on its own, but the phone completely glitches: hardware buttons don't do what they should do, the launcher starts to zoom in and out on its own, and so on and so on. Now this doesn't seem like a touch screen issue.. Anyone with same troubles?
Sounds like hardware issues to me. Are you able to take it to a Sprint store and have them check it out?

If anything, you may be able to get a refurbished replacement, though I am not sure how many Sprint HTC Hero handsets are left in their stock at this point. It is worth a try though.

I believe that this is a problem with HTC hero, few other users have reported this as well. My Hero now doesnt work at ALL, unless I squeeze the bottom third with one hand and then use the touchscreen with other.

Finally got Cyanogen to work and now this screen failure !! Had the fone since March 2010, dont have warranty or insurance, not sure how much will they charge me to repair or give me a used one for free ?

Otherwise, headed to ebay to get another set. LBP, if I buy a EVo from ebay / Caraigslist, will they make me pay the extra $ 10 'premium data" or 4G ( whatever they call it ) charge or will I be able to keep my current 3G
plan ?

If you get ANY other handset, whether it is 3G or 4G, and switch over to that ESN, you will incur the $10.00 extra per month. They call it a "premium data" fee.

It does not matter if the handset is new or old either. The minute you switch to that handset's ESN from your current Sprint HTC Hero one, the charge will be added to your monthly bill.

and that is true even if
1. I get a replacement phone because my current phone could not be repaired by Sprint store ?
2. I use y old flip phone ( not 3G )
Thanks for your response.

You might be able to get Sprint to let you keep your bill the same without the $10.00 premium data charge being added if you get a replacement handset from them if the old one can not be repaired. I cannot guarantee that will definitely happen though.

I think that the $10.00 premium data charge only applies to smartphones. I would call a Sprint customer service representative and verify that though.
