do you have and upgrade with sprint? I am talking about the upgrade privilege...

if you do... then you can purchase any sprint phone .. from any retailer you wish.. sprint will honor the service and upgrade price.
Note: a lot of those online great deals.. come with a bonus restriction that might bite you in the ass when you cancel! read all small prints!!!

purchasing directly from sprint is normally the most expensive way. but the $479.99 is NOT the upgrade price.. you are looking at the full retail price of the phone.

make sure you have an upgrade discount from sprint available to you!

Only if you are gold premier can you upgrade yearly, and that's about to end soon. If you're silver premier then renewing your contract 2-years only takes $75 off the price, not worth resigning a contract. If you call customer service though, they can offer you the $75 discount and also give you a credit for a free months service (what they offered me)

Wow I just found out that I'm no longer eligible for my free upgrade I was told when I signed my last contract. I'm quite pissed right now. Almost 10 years and I'm going to be shopping around soon.

You probably got hit by the changes to the Premier program that happened back in the spring, when a lot of people who used to qualify for Gold were dropped to Silver instead. As of now, you should be on the "New for You" program, which means you'll be eligible for a discount in April or so of 2012 (20 months after you got your Evo).

So you can either eat the early termination fee and switch, call Sprint and try to finagle some sort of deal, or wait until your 20 month anniversary and get your upgrade.

Were I you, I'd call and talk to someone. Calmly and rationally, though let them know you're not pleased and that you're considering finding service elsewhere.

Yeah that's exactly what happened. They offered an additional $75 credit. I said no thanks I'd rather buy the phone outright and not get locked into another 2 year contract that they could just change in the middle like they did this one. I said after 9 years you have lost my trust in you.

I don't really need a new phone but I got it in my head that I was getting the Epic touch and giving my Epic to my son who could use another phone.

I just think it's crap to make changes to you in mid contract.

If you're a Premier member or what have you, I don't believe they violated the contract, which sucks for the customer.

If you're just a regular old customer, then it's possible that they have violated the contract and you can probably tell 'em to kick rocks.

I'd call again and try talking to someone else. Sometimes it takes a few tries before you get a decent rep.

Default Researching right phone to upgrade to

I have a AT&T Samsung SGH-I997 running Honeycomb. I have been waiting for phones to come out that will be able to fully exploit the power of Ice Cream Sandwich and be 4G LTE. What I read earlier this year is that such phones will become available in the 3rd quarter of the year. I am happy with AT&T and wish to stay with it. I am also happy with the Samsung phone, though if HTC or someone else turned out to offer the best Android 4.0 4G LTE phone I would be willing to switch. I have not found any specific information on models I should start looking out for, and am hoping that someone here can point me in the right direction.Thanks.

If you're looking @ a prepaid option, VIRGIN MOBILE & BOOST are getting some of SPRINT'S re-tooled phones.

VM is releasing the EVO V (aka EVO 3-D) today, which comes w/ANDROID 4.0 ICS right out of the box.
If you're in a good 4G WIMAX coverage area, this may be a decent option, especially if 4G LTE coverage on any/all of the networks is weak or non-existent & not coming to your area any time soon.

However if you're happy w/your service w/ AT&T, I'd hesitate on switching, as phones come & go all the time. Plus, you have the option of rooting any ANDROID that AT&T has & installing a custom ICS ROM.

Before switching service, I'd do a little research on all the networks 4G LTE rollout schedule for your area.

As DAN330 stated, the SAMSUNG SGS3 is due to roll out soon enough. It's definitely a great option, but, get it on the network that serves your area best.
