LG hasn't really offered a superphone for sprint yet. The viper is the closest, but that is more a mid range.

Verizon had the spectrum last year, which was basically the optimus hd and it got decent reviews.

But I agree about support. Support is very important for me, both non-rooted and rooted. Samsung's non-rooted support was awful, prior to the success of the sgs 2, but they seem to be on track after all the success last year with the sgs 2 and note.

It looks very tempting.

Sigh, I've planned to get the LTEvo this Saturday and I already got a case and a screen protector on its way from Amazon. But... Gah!!!

Well, I still think that I'll be happy with the LTEvo, even if it's eclipsed! Lol!

Looks-wise, I actually like that better than LTEvo and the SGS 3. Only question now is if Sprint's version, that already passed through the FCC, will come with all the rumored specs that the Optimus G will have.

One thing that's a 'bit discouraging about LG is their car dock offerings, as they don't really hold up compared to HTC and Motorola. With so much time spent in my car, this is a big factor for me.

Hahaha...just saw this. Remember, it wasn't for me. It was for my family member (and more importantly, to get them away from the iPhone 4S...which they ended up hating compared to Android via the original Epic). They love it and love having a physical keyboard again, so that was pretty much a no brainer to get this one for them, even though the specs aren't quite that "spectacular," it's still worth it to have them on a phone that'll last them for a good amount of time.

LG Eclipse (LS970)
130.9 X 71.6 X ???

Bigger (as in tall and wide) Superphones
SGS 3 - 136.6 X 70.6 X 8.6
LTEvo - 134.8 X 68.9 X 8.9
LG Optimus 4X - 132.4 X 68.1 X 8.9

Phablets
LG Optimus Vu - 139.6 X 90.4 X 8.5
SG Note - 147 X 83 X 10

By comparison, with the dimensions that were listed on the FCC leak, the height and width are closer to superphone size than phablet size. That said, it's extremely short at 130.9 compared to 136.6 and 134.8 (on the SGS 3 and LTEvo respectively), but is closer to the height of the Optimus 4X HD (132.4). The width is wider than the SGS 3 by 1mm.

My thinking, based purely on the dimensions listed on the FCC, is that it will end up being thinner than the LG Optimus Vu, which is extremely thin at 8.5mm. So, if you combine that with the shorter height, but slightly wider...it actually might be very easy to hold that phone as compared to the other superphones. We'll see. I'm excited to see how it stacks up with all the specs and feel. From that older leaked video, from back in May, it might be very nice. The other thing, about the weird dimensions is, with the shorter height, I'm assuming no capacitive buttons because there's no way a 4.67 inch screen would fit that height if there were capacitive buttons.

-EDIT- It's actually very close in size to the Razr Maxx, as far as height, but the Razr Maxx has capacitive buttons and only a 4.3 inch screen.
Here are the official specs of the Optimus G

Quote:
Key Specifications:
Chipset: Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro Processor with 1.5GHz Quad-Core CPU, Adreno 320 GPU with 4G LTE
Operating System: Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich
Network: 2G / 3G / 4G LTE
Display: 4.7-inch WXGA True HD IPS+ (1280x768 pixels) / 15:9 ratio
Memory: 32GB
RAM: 2GB DDR
Cameras: 13.0MP rear / 1.3MP front
Battery: 2,100 mAh
Size: 131.9 x 68.9 x 8.45mm
Weight: 145g
Other: Bluetooth 4.0, Wi-Fi, USB2.0 HS, A-GPS, MHL, DLNA, NFC
I'm a little worried that Sprint rushed to get a "dumbed down" version of the Optimus G. By the dimensions of the Optimus G, Sprint's version is a little shorter, but also a little 'bit wider. Did Sprint make another awful decision and mess with the designs to cater to things that might not have any importance at all to their customers? I sure hope not and really hope that all the specs on the Eclipse match up with the Optimus G.

I don't think it'll be a mistake, considering your circumstances. Are you a Silver Rewards member at Best Buy or just regular? For Silver members, there's a 45 day return/exchange policy for mobile phones (60 days for other products). The 14 day Sprint upgrade window still applies, regardless of that return/exchange policy from Best Buy, but they may still allow you to exchange if the LG Eclipse releases within that window.

I agree, regarding HTC's history of support vs. LG's. All of the OEM's are capable of making changes for the better, which was evidenced with Samsung's success last year...but HTC will still carry a great reputation from past years.

Hmmm...I'm figuring the Eclipse will have similar accessories as the Spectrum 2, but I can't tell if the vehicle dock will have a built in micro-usb or if it'll still require the micro-usb to be plugged into the device when mounted:

I'm gonna seriously have to consider the Note 2 also:

Samsung officially announces the Samsung Galaxy Note 2

From the few videos I've watched on youtube, it looks like multi-tasking is so easy on that device. Even though the size of the phone really still seems so enormous to me, that device might prevent me from needing a separate tablet at work, especially for meetings when taking notes. Right now, the Note 2 and LG Eclipse seem to be my leading candidates for my last upgrade w/ LTEvo and SGS 3 right behind.

The next couple months are going to be excruciatingly long.

Hmmm...Although, I doubt this device makes it to Sprint, part of me wonders if it'll be available across the different providers:

Motorola and Intel sending out invites for September 18 event in London

Although, I'm not completely convinced the single-core Medfield processor will really hold up performance-wise, under higher use of apps and multiple apps loaded:

If the LG Eclipse that went through the FCC already is just another mid-range device like the L9, it'll be a "Fail" for me and it'll drop off my list of contenders:

Now that the iphone is sold, I have money set to be used for the next upgrade. I'm starting to sip on the galaxy note 2 koolaid, even though I still think it's pretty humongous. Still considering the lg eclipse also. Part of me just feels like the note 2 will hold down the fort until I decide which tablet I'll be getting. I'm seriously considering Samsung's windows 8 slate tablets cuz they come with the s-pen and it has keyboard attachment. Also seems poignant cuz the release date for those is my birthday. So, if I go that route, that means I'll likely go with the eclipse, assuming it's the same as the optimus g. Man, I just wish it were the end of october already.

Use it. I believe major carriers are under contract with apple barring them from releasing any new phones until a year has passed since the release of a new I phone.

Don't take my word as 100% truth, though.

Saw that last night, but didn't get a chance to watch the whole video. Part of the reason I mentioned the Note 2 being a stronger contender than I originally thought it would be.

Ugh...really wish Sprint would offer a true succesor to the Photon:

New Motorola Phone Is Said to Have Edge-to-Edge Screen - Bloomberg

Razr HD will have edge-to-edge screen?...If that does happen, Motorola is definitely moving in the right steps. I seriously don't understand, after ICS was developed, why there was a need for surrounding bezel...just doesn't make logical sense w/ exception to where the speaker and sensors are at the top and bottom edges of the phones.

I read a little piece a while back that brought up some good points and was overall interesting and sort of against the grain. They don't really speak towards the physical vs. software button issue - which seems like a little different issue.
They aren't against the idea of less bezel (neither am I), they are just looking at it in a different perspective to see what problems will need to be overcome. While the writing is not great, I like when people try different angles and think through things like this.

Smartphone displays need a bezel. Here's why

Interesting. I also read somewhere that the next Nexus is rumored to have and edge to edge screen.

I really hope the only reason Motorola isn't given more love on Sprint is because of Verizon exclusivity:

Is Motorola Planning To Debut A New Phone With Edge-to-Edge Display on Sept 5th? [Rumors]

That rendering looks awesome and would not mind a device like that. Here's to hoping there's a Moto Nexus device in the pipeline, otherwise I'll giving LG or Samsung a spin.

I don't think I want a small tablet for a phone

Either one of those built as solidly as Moto phones tend to be?

I really haven't had either as my primary phone before, so I couldn't even say from personal experience, but all the oem's have stepped up enough for me to give them a fair chance.

That's reasonable, I suppose, so I took a look...

I left out an important bit: I require a world (aka: international) phone. It turns out the Photon Q is currently Sprint's only Android world phone, and that phone is definitely not acceptable.

For the life of me I cannot imagine what they're thinking. For what little good it's likely to do, I'm currently formulating a polite "what the hell?" email to Dan Hesse. (Which, of course, probably won't actually be seen or read by him, but...)

I don't know for sure that I'm going to move to a smartphone and data plan, soon, but, if I do, it looks like I'll have to change carriers. That would be a shame.

Totally understandable, Jim. I totally agree. Even with the photon q as the only world phone, Sprint locked the SIM on the q, instead if keeping it unlocked like on the original Photon. There's no reason people wouldn't just buy a prepaid phone and minutes while traveling internationally vs. using their sprint phone. Businesses might encourage the use internationally, for purposes of tax shelter (due to high cost international use), but to the general consumer, it's not a great selling point.

I still love my original photon, which is why I'm keeping it as my dedicated music player/backup phone/international phone, but I'm not exactly sure sprint is making all the right decisions in order to garner new customers. I'm starting to wonder if it really is a goal to get close to att/verizon or remain where they are and be content with that.

That annoys the bejesus out of me. They're essentially saying "You're bound to us, no matter where you go, until the end of time, even after you've met your subsidization commitment."

Yeah, but now they need to carry two phones around: One they can actually use, and the other containing, essentially, their digital lives.

Sprint continues to give me fewer and fewer reasons to stay with them.

Garner new customers? I wonder if they're making the right decisions to keep the ones they have. They're certainly on the verge of blowing it with this one.

Interesting that this article mentions a source at IFA saying that the Note 2 will be announced by a few carriers including Sprint in October.

May the Great and Powerful Odin make this come true.

Per the "How a Sprint Phone is Born" slides, it showed a 5.5 phablet 1H 2013. Sprint knew about this Note 2 a while ago, huh? I'm hoping they will release it this December 2012 and not make me wait longer.

Dont be mislead...the q is not a world phone. It has international roaming capability.
The moto admiral is one of only a few options I am aware of on sprint for world use with removable sim

The original MoPho has a removable SIM. Pretty sure the Touch Pro 2 had a removable SIM also.

Thanks for the clarification. It wasn't even remotely under consideration, anyway.

All things considered, at this point, I'm pretty much reluctantly coming to the conclusion I'll be switching carriers. If that happens: When my wife's contract is up: She'll be switched, too. Unlikely we'll be back, unless VZ (it'll probably be VZ) really annoys me. Being as the vast majority of my friends, colleagues and business acquaintances are on VZ, and find them acceptable, odds are we will, too.

I honestly do not understand Sprint's "thinking."

You have to pick which carrier meets your specific needs. That being said, do plenty of research. Your best world capable phones are going to come from gsm carriers...and its still not as easy as just popping in a sim from local carrier while abroad.

Angry? No, not angry, per se. More baffled and a mite annoyed, I think.

How does explaining I was happy with Sprint, until they had no phone for me, and asking what's hard about using a pre-paid SIM reflect anger?

I'm honestly curious about the SIM thing.

I was just wondering. It just comes off that way off how you write. Your words don't exactly look the most positive, so they come off as if you have a big gripe towards Sprint, which you have every rite to feel, but just wanted to make sure that you're not angry with any of us for some of the things we've said because even your answers or quotes for some of us are a little negatively charged...at least, that's how your words come off.

I never thought he was angry.

I am curious of whst you have seen thst you like Jim for phone offerings on other carriers. Currently the offerings from lg samsung and htc are identicsl on 3 of the 4 majors.

Ok so as for sim....all carrier phones are sim locked...or locked specific to thst carrier.

Verizon and sprint do this via esn database
Tmo and att through programming and sim card.

For example. I buy blah blah blah on att..go to england....i cant just buy a pre paid sim and throw it in the phone. A sim unlock code is required. That unlock code is tied to the imie of the device.

Att refuses to give out unlock codes for typically up to 6 months. Most likely to prevent fraud. This gives users only two options...pay an online company to obtain the unlock code or in some cases root or jailbreak the device.

Little known fact...the sprint iphone can be used on almost any carrier and overseas. It just has to be jailbroken

Hope that helps some at least.

I agree, as a carrier they are great but they are EXTREMELY lacking when it comes to offering good phones.

Hmmm... I guess just the Motorola brand. I guess it seems that Sprint's lacking, to me, because they don't have what I'm looking for, whereas VZ does.

Ah. Okay. Thanks for the info. Now that you mention it, I think I saw a complaint about this in another forum, related to either VZ or "AT&T."

I suppose it makes sense. Prevents a user from getting a subsidized phone, then taking it to Europe or some other GSM area, bailing on the contract and stiffing the provider that subsidized the purchase.

Does Sprint eventually, after some time, unlock the SIM? If not: I see no point in a world phone. A sticky or FAQ entry here might be handy.

Some Moto phones are built a bit more robustly than many other phones. VZ' 'Droids, for example, have the Kevlar shells, Gorilla Glass fronts and, IIRC, titanium or high-strength aluminium internal frames. ISTR the Photon was built similarly?
