Default Change Phone Number

I would like to change my phone number to a different area code. I believe that is easily done via sprint.com. My question is: is there a "grace period" when calls to my old phone number will receive a message stating what my number number is? If so, how long will this period last?

I don't think they receive a message at all. Once the number is changed, that's it.
