About M / F
Was just wondering about maybe putting on the posts of avatar and info of every post a Male or Female checkbox with the option to check one or notor change at any time. ((((Female's can even check MALE if want to be unknown)))). The reason is some of us say he this and he that and then we get corrected by the poster saying they are a she, then we apologize for that, how are we suposed to know this. now optional, so if they don't want to check one or the other that is up to them. just wondering thoughts on this? and can it be done?

I tend to say, they said, rather than, he said, even if it breaks grammar rules.
Not all of our posters are comfortable disclosing gender - some are, some aren't - so that's how I've approached it.
Unfortunately, too many days I deal with reports where someone just has to act like they've never met a girl/woman before.
I'm not saying you're wrong, and I get this is made as a helpful suggestion and definitely out of respect for all concerned - and I am always all for that.
Just putting out this other tidbit as food for thought, no more nor less.

that is why i said the boxes could be there and is optional to check one or just leave them blank, thats the idea of it. maybe right under the avatar.

yes that is for sure, and again that is why it sould be check boxes that are "optional", they do it on surveys and everything and is optional. if you don't want then don't. but if people correct you then they might just want to check a box.

Would you want check boxes under your avatar that says Male/Female. With the option OF NOT HAVING TO CHECK IF DON"T WANT OR CAN UNCHECK AT ANY TIME . Sometimes we say he this and he that and then get corrected by the poster saying they are a she. Now if you post a name that suggests you are female ok, but if had check boxes to check one or the other or none, what are your thoughts on this?
I've seen it on other sites, didn't seem to be a problem. Ladies who don't want the extra attention can always say they're a man. Doesn't really matter to me one way or the other, I have made the mistake before, but you can usually tell anyway.

I think a small male or female graphic right next to the Online/Offline graphic would look much cleaner with the current forum layout. If they choose nothing, then it's simply no graphic at all.

For me personally (I won't speak for all women), it's a huge huge pet peeve of mine to be referred to as male (which happens all the time on forums and in Wow). I'm a bit more geeky, tech savvy, and to the point than most women so I've often been mistaken for a guy. It's annoying to say the least... so any chance I get to show that I'm not a guy in my forum info I'll jump at the opportunity.

As a male I see your point, but correct them on your sex ( female ) & move on or send them a PM to let them know, but doing what the OP is sugguesting in this overly sensitive society in which we currently live in is just not a good idea IMHO.

I'm a member of more forums than I care to admit (having several different hobbies other than modding my phone)... it's not a problem on those.
People like options. I want the option to show my gender somewhere under my Av.

If I could edit my title, it would read what I add on most other forums, "Psychotic Female". It's always been a sure indicator for me (plus it shows my fun side lol).

If you were a Premium Member you could add a custom user title & put it there as well. This is totally up to you of course.
Example :

C'mon Treb! You're not fooling anyone with that "You could change your title if you went premium" stuff... We all know you're just trying to get more 2 pointers for the next (if there is one) TOW.

Thanks for making this thread, Cwhatever.
As stated above, I too have seen this option on other sites and have never seen it being a problem. If someone is worried about sexual harassment then they have the OPTION not to give out the information. Simple. I think it would be a good option to add for those of us who don't mind sharing what gender we are.
I can't count the times I've seen where a female has had to make it known that she was a SHE, not a HE. I have a feeling that there are quite a few of the ladies in here that would love to see the option added.
As for people who want to act childish and don't know how to treat a woman, do we really need them or want them on this site anyways?? I'm a MOD on another site and I have absolutely no tolerance for such actions. Any sexual attack on another member = a ban. Period.
I totally see both sides of this argument, but I just don't see why it is needed on a site that offers what this site does. Just saying.....
When you interact with the same people on a regular basis, it's kind of nice to have at least a little idea about who you're "talking" to. Plus it helps build the sense of community. Anybody coming to Android Forums looking for a girlfriend, um, there are probably places with better odds lol.
I guess I don't see the issue, although I'm not against having the option.
Anything posted here that would be offensive to anyone based on their gender would be against the rules and should be reported anyway. Anytime I have referred to a member by the incorrect shorthand and they let me know, a quick "oops, sorry" in a subsequent post has been more than enough to smooth any ruffled feathers.
Why not put it in the signature (if wanted)? Everyone over 25 posts gets one to put almost anything they want in....
IMO, it doesn't make sense to add another option to slow the site down for something like this... granted, I don't pay the bills so it's not my call....

I'm alright assuming Pinky-girl is female and Tech-guy is male. If the name doesn't lend itself to gender, I'll apologies if it's wrong but at the end of the day, they didn't make any effort to make it known so shouldn't be hurt if we get it wrong.

Sometimes a cool name that you want doesn't specify or show that your male and female. You might say sorry to that person but after that post gets buried new people don't know and they make the same mistake. You can even put it in your profile not the posting profile. This way if you're unsure you could just check their profile and it'll State weather there male female or if they decide not to check any that's up to them.

Amen to that.
It's nice to know whether or not I'm addressing a male or female when answering a members questions and trying to point them in the right direction. I tend to take a little extra time and be a little more formal when talking to a woman. It's just the way I was raised.

This stemmed off of my post early in the week lol.. I didn't mean no harm by it.. I mistakenly get passed off as a male in other reasons (y'all probably figure that one out easily why..) but I do think it's a good idea to have an optional M/F thingy.. Just my 2 cent's tho . .
Personally I'm not really convinced how much demand there would be for this, although I'm not against the idea.
But, for those of you who would have concerns over this being brought in - would it help if gender was not asked for (even optionally) during registration for the forum? I feel that if you had to dig into your UserCP to find it, it would be much clearer that it was opt-in, rater than required info.

After time to mull it over more...
I highly doubt males would be moved enough to make it known that they are indeed a male, as that is already what is typically assumed on a technology website.
Furthermore, like I mentioned before the females who want it to be known already do a fine job of letting people know via username, avatar, sig, bio, ect.
In the end, the problem is the assumption people are making. Stop using he/she if you don't know the person. Earlys comment is dead on.
If female members really feel like this is needed, I'm Ok with it.
I just doubt there's that big of a need for it when the problem can easily be corrected by not making assumptions.

I would of called you a male...lol. random numbers and letters always makes me think its a he.
Hey just today a well known member with a very masculine user name was mistaken for a woman, so I put that with Petra's comments and I am seeing the benefits.
Definitely a post registration option though, yeah.
I don't know if this is doable or not, I'm not the guy that would know, it depends on our forum software and dev support priorities. I can say that we'll make sure that this gets admin attention, but please be patient on this, there's most likely a list of needs in front of this one.

Since the first time I saw you say you're female, you've been female.
Sure, irregulars might not know but those who simply recognise your name and have seen you post that you're female, just know.
Many screen names on tech forums, albeit inadvertently - appear male. So when one of those names turns round and says "Well actually, I'm female", it tends to stick.
I dont think it should be mandatory, but if there's something that helps go for it. But if it means that much, I think signature is a great place to put it. Thats making an effort. Its a shame you only get one per page.
On a more facetious note, anyone remember "ASL"? We could append that to our sn's.

LMBO!!!! See.... this is exactly what I mean. PERFECT EXAMPLE.
Here something even funnier..... before I changed my avatar to something more masculine, people used to see my name and think Wetbiker was female. Imagine that. LOL
