Question Suggestion Box: Carrier on our profile?

Just a suggestion... As I poke around looking for all kinds of things I noticed that there isn't a 'carrier' spot located on our profiles. I myself find it helpful to know who has what carrier because as we all know, not all carriers have the same service. (As you see, I added my carrier to my profile "illegally" LOL ) I feel it would be a plus to give & get advice while knowing who has what carrier instead of guessing. Yes, I could ask but I'm long winded enough, and do you really want to sift through all my ramblings AND some?

There is actually a suggestion box forum, here's a link:

Suggestion Box & Feedback - Android Forums

You might want to post there if this doesn't get moved there first, the people in charge do keep a close eye on that section and are good about considering suggestions. Doesn't seem like a bad idea IMO. Good luck!

I think this is a fantastic idea as it would help with support questions for those devices across multiple carriers. Only problem I see is for those users who use more than one carrier (and there are many).

Didn't really think about that BUT it wouldn't be much different than how we add our devices. The good ole comma seems to be doing a fine job with that so far.

Yeah, considering how many international networks there are, there's no way we could have pre-set options to for users to pick from, so people would have to type it out themselves anyway. So people could add commas if they wanted.

The one unfortunate risk to providing a free-form field for members to note their carriers is that some may choose to take liberties with the name of the carrier (in ways I really don't want to imagine! )!

Tis true. I think some folks may be biased (or have some hatred) towards certain carriers.
Why not just have a drop down of the carriers we have forums for on the site? Yes, there are some with others out there, but they represent a much smaller fraction of the forum.

Haha, yeah probably need to go with Dread's idea... However, I am sure there would be some very amusing tweaks by the most creative amongst us.

But if you provide a static list, what do you do about people who have multiple phones... on multiple carriers?

I suspect however one slices this, there are going to be challenges in implementing it such that it would be both complete and practical.

If people want to be "creative" with their carrier name, there's nothing stopping them from putting it in their profile now. We trust people to put what they want in their device section and their signature, I don't see any reason to be a nanny about this. If someone puts something inappropriate that can be dealt with the same as an inappropriate signature.

I never think about the 'bad apples' when I have an idea or add to someones ideas... I guess I just figure we're all mature enough around here to NOT add some ignorant name or bash the carrier we have or have had. Gmash is right though. I say If someone doesn't know how to act by not putting a "proper" carrier in the space, clunk em on the head or rip their finger nails off with pliers.

When I was using the Ascend, it was available on two carriers, Metro pcs, and Cricket. One of the things we asked everybody to do in the "welcome to the forum" post was put which carrier they had in their profile so it would be easier to help them. (Eliminated the step of asking "which carrier" every time.) Worst I saw was a few "Metro POS" lol. Not exactly scandalous.

Thank you MP - I don't think I am the initial person to have come up with the idea though... I believe it's been mentioned before. I just don't know when or where or if it really was mentioned before (I'm rambling again aren't I?)
