Default best notepad application for the droid

Hi everyone. I was hoping to get some feed back on the best notepad application out there. I've seen posts on a bunch of best apps for many different things but I haven't been able to find one about the best notepad application. If anybody has a suggestion ro recommendation, I would love to hear it. Thanks.

The one I use is free and is just called notepad.\

The icon is a green crayon. I like it because it syncs with Helipad for free.

For a simple notepad app: AK Notepad

For a sync-to-the-web notepad: Evernote (Evernote is currently not in the market, but you can get their latest beta, now at a ready-to-release RC1 level, here: Evernote User Forum • View topic - Evernote for Android 1.1RC1 )

I've been using "Note Everything", which I really like. It also lets you Import/Export, do VoiceNotes / PaintNotes.

Not too bad for free!

I had been using AK Notepad and liked it just fine until I came across Mobisle Notes Free. I love it because it lets you type notes in plain text and also lets you create checklists for shopping, etc.

Default how do you define best?

The question really is, what are you looking for in notepad app? Gdocs is great because of its ability to synch with google docs, but there is no search capability and no ability to set up categories, both of which are must haves for me as I imported 600 memos from my Palm.

The only one I found that does both of those things is Note Everything. The paid version also has a few other great features like creating checklists. Like I said, though, it depends on what you need.

I just wanted a very basic notepad app. Let me type out different notes, like "Holiday shopping list" "To do list" "grocery list" "Droid apps I want to try" etc. I had AK notepad but switched to try OI notepad because it let me do the Droid copy and paste function. It's nice to be able to paste stuff in there and copy and paste stuff out of there. AK let's you send your information out by text or email if you want to though, I just couldn't find an easy way to get stuff into my notepad without just typing it in there.

I'm actually just looking for a simple notepad for shopping list and to do lists type of things. Nothing fancy. I don't know if I care about some of the exporting functions because I haven't tried them but basically, I just want a notepad where I can quickly and easily type/write on a notepad.

WOuld you say that AK Notepad does this and you only tried OI notepad because you wanted the copy and paste function? If so, i might give ak a try. Thanks for all the input everybody.

AK notepad does this. I only tried OI because the copy and paste. They are similar in my opinion and both are nice little programs. If you decide you don't like it both are easy to uninstall.

Good luck!

LOL, so many opinions, yet they are all valid. I use AK notepad for general note taking but use OurGroceries for shopping lists (it's really useful).

@lemodular - sadly I have discovered (as have many others) that for some really dumb and inconceivable reason, the Evernote Devs created this app such that you can NOT view your notes when you phone is offline! Raher than saving to your SD card, they exist in limbo somewhere inaccessible on your internal memory until you connect and sync, then you can see them "online". Once you turn off WiFi and APNs "poof" you can't see them. It is sucky.

that's too bad. I dl'd but did not want to sign up yet until I read up on it some more. Now, with what you said above, I may not use it at all. Too bad, that could have replaced a few apps. What's wrong with keeping it local with an option to sync like so many of the other apps?

I've been a long time user of Evernote and I can sy it is decidedly NOT "sucky". Evernote isn't intended as a pure note taking utility, it's more of a cloud based life organizer. The mobile app is an extension of the service meant to make it a bit easier to use as opposed to the mobile web site. Local caching might be a useful addition, but it would be a problem for users like me who have thousands of notes including many large web clips, photos and graphics. Saying Evernote is a "sucky" Android note app is like saying Word is "sucky " as a photo organizer. Anything can be "sucky" if your not using it correctly. If you want to see what it's really about, I suggest signing up (free) and trying it out via your pc. I highly suggest using the the extension available for most popular browsers. If you "get" Evernote that way, the mobile app will make total sense to you!

@pastafarian: 1. They could have included the option for a notebook that resides on the SD card, and which doesn't update unless you ask it to update with a corresponding notebook online.

2. iPhone users can see local note using the "favourites" function they decided not to give us.

I hae been using Evernote for about 2 years now, but I don't sync _any_ of my notes online, I like to keep them on my PC. I wanted to be able to use Evernot on my Android phone to be able to sync notes to the desktop app via my online account, but not being able to see them on my phone makes it close to useless.

Far and away the best note/list app is "Note Everything". I personally purchased the pro version and it is entirely worth it. I've tried almost all the others and this is the best. Especially the folder organizing and the recurring lists (with the pro version).

I use astrid for my "todo" list and Note Everything for everything else.

Overall I like the app, but my main gripe is they do things in a non-Android way. For instance, when you are adding a new note, there is no "Save" button at the bottom, so in most Android apps, or in a settings panel, you would hit the back button. Do that here and you get a "Do you want to discard?" message. To save you have to hit the menu button. It just doesn't flow.

As this is their first effort, I'll give them a pass and hope it gets smoothed out in version 2.

Can anyone offer some advice for a certain situation i just came across?

I was out of the country with my phone that had no internet service either cellular or via the hotel. I had an email on my phone that contained a long document I wanted to edit. This document was not an attachment, but rather embedded as text in the email. I had my laptop and a usb cable.

What I couldn't figure out was a way to get that data into a file on the phone that I could access via the computer. I have astro file manager. I have k9 email. I wanted to select the text in the email, copy it to a file, save that file on the sd card, and then I would be able to copy it over to my laptop, and edit it in word.

Which of the above notepads (or maybe memopads, not sure of the difference between these) would be ideal for this? thanks.

You can select all, and then copy and paste.

I'm not sure if there is a limit to Note Everything note length, but it would allow you to export to the SD card as a text file you could then get on tou your computer.

You can also get Documents2Go: Documents To Go 2.0 Main App v2.003 Application for Android | Productivity

The free app will only let you VIEW docs, but you can purchase an unlock key directly from DataViz to get the full version which allows editing of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files.

Well, as far as I know, it is the only option for editing Office docs on Android. DataViz are a pretty good software company. They've been selling Docs2Go for years, I remember it was out for the Palm OS for a long time.

I haven't used it much yet, but I like having it just in case.

There is also gDocs which lets you edit Google Docs, of course you would need internet access for syncing them. I'm pretty sure it does not export.

well i am a lurker on this thread. i'm trying out Note Everything and will buy the pro version if I find I need the extended feature. Evernote looks promising but I also don't like the idea of needing access to the web to get to my stuff. Seems like the app would be slower in areas where the signal isn't great. I would use this for sure at the grocery store and my service there is usually pretty questionable. thanks for sharing.

I have to admit my disappointment with Note Everything. I came from Palm land where the memo was a cool thing, easy to use. This NE isn't. It's sort of clunky, hard to even see the cursor when you go to add something, harder still to select where you want to enter things...and right, I haven't found an easy way to move things around either. Time for something else.

Exactly! And way cool is a choice of font size...you could actually use this during a public talk.......and you could color code your notes if you're inclined.

I don't know if you're still looking, but I downloaded the free version of one called MyDay -- it more of a journal or a diary than just a notepad, but thought you might want to see if it was what you were looking for.
