Default Notification sound issues?

I just recently got my gs3 and it's still stock and uprooted, love the phone and my only issue is when it receive text messages the notification sound cuts out and it's been doing this on and off.. Not sure what to think.

Turn off the option to automatically delete text messages after a certain limit, that's what's causing the notification to cut short

really? that's weird. any idea why?
i don't know how i feel about storing all those messages on my phone. automatic deleting is nice.
