Are you shutting your phone off before doing this step? You need to push and hold the home key then push the power key while still holding the home key down.

I'm having the same trouble as Sgior13: I've tried renaming the downloaded file update and update.zip - with the same results shown above.

I thought it might be a problem regarding the "mode" of the microSD card - with just a couple of days working with the platform, I haven't quite yet figured out the nuances of this. I tried the upgrade process with the SD both selected, and de-selected, with regards to the:

"Use for USB storage" option under Settings-> SD card

As I said, I'm totally new to the Android platform and the G1 device - but as a seasoned UNIX guy, the following error looks problematic:

Quote:
E: Can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p1 (No such file or directory)
Followed by, a not-surprising, since it couldn't mount the device:

Quote:
E: Can't mount SDCARD:update.zip
Installation aborted
Any ideas / suggestions / clarification on how the microSD card should be 'configured', options-wise? I'm just using Windows explorer to copy the file in place and rename, while the device is configured to "Use [SD card] for USB storage".

Thanks to all who have collected and shared this information,
Billy

BTW: The update file I'm using was downloaded from:

https://android.clients.google.com/updates/signed-kila-ota-115247-prereq.TC4-RC19+RC28.zip

I've seen a lot of people saying that you can't do it with the SD card that came with the phone, which is odd because I used the one that came with the phone, and I had no problems. I'm thinking some cards had issues and some didn't? Here's a picture of the card that came with my phone (taken with my phone, with a different microSD card):

Default The phone is a lot smoother after the update!!

Well I couldn't wait for the update any longer, I went ahead and installed it my self on the phone. The phone is a lot faster, smoother and not as laggy as before. When of the things I hated about the G1, its not as smooth as the iphone.

Well that all changed, its not super fast and not laggy. Its a little laggy in the text department (I have 400 texts at least), I haven't tested it much yet but so far its a good update. Doesn't hurt.

Yes you will get it eventually. But who is to say how long you will have to wait? I know some of us in this thread are used to tweaking the os in our blackberrys and such so we dont have a lot of patients when it comes to waiting for a new upgrade to come out. Lol. So we jump right on one when it becomes available to us. So yes you will get one, but unless you want to do it your self, you wil be waiting on tmo.

I would hav to agree - after droiding my update from the microSD, things seem quicker, smoother - scrolling seems smoother. Although, the GPS still stinks. Never did work correctly for me more than once or twice. Can never find my location closer than 2 miles. Terrible.

Hopefully this can be fixed with future RC's.

Make sure you go to Security & Location > make sure Enable GPS satellites & Use wireless networks are both checked, and that you have a clear view of the sky.

That's quite odd, and certainly confusing. I could see how different micro SD cards could have different performance characteristics (e.g. Class 2 vs. Class 4 cards) - but I'm having trouble grasping what would allow a functional SD card (I can see the card, and files/folders, using the File Manager app on the G1) to not work with regards to the upgrade?

As confusing as it may seem: My card is, in fact, different than the one Manacit shows above:

Instead of a SanDisk, my G1 came with a Transcend micro SD card:

Again, it seems quite strange that this would prevent the upgrade from occurring.

Just for clarity sake: I did NOT unzip the file prior to attempting - rather, I just renamed it to update.zip. The path, as seen in the Android File Manager application, is:

/sdcard/update.zip

Finally: Could anyone who has successfully completed the process please advise as to the setting of your:

Menu -> Settings -> SD card & phone storage -> Use for USB storage

option? Of course, this option needs to be enabled in order to "see" the device when connected to a computer, in order to copy the update.zip file into place. I subsequently tried the upgrade with this setting in either state - with similar results.

Just a thought: Are there md5 sums I can check for the download, to make sure it made it intact?

When did you get your phone? I know t-mobile had G1s out of stock for a while (the whole Nov 10 thing), and I got mine in the second batch (ordered in late October, after all the people who were told Nov 10, so I'm assuming that I got the second batch of phones), so they might have used a different card for the second batch. Try taking the card out, copying all of the data to on it to your computer then formatting it to FAT or FAT32, then trying again.

For the record, I got the md5 sum of the update.zip that I used to update my phone (it's still on the SD card):
nick@nick-desktop:/media/disk$ md5sum update.zip
b1d8201ca431352a68cb15157aed998f update.zip

Hopefully this will help since I had problems also at first.

TURN OFF YOUR PHONE!!!!!!!!! Then follow the instructions.

Also I made a folder on my desktop and "saved" the update folder. I named the update.....ready????........."Update".

I then copy and pasted this to the microsd card without unzipping it then TURNED OFF MY PHONE and did the rest.

Phone is MUCH faster but after playing with it for 4-5 hours the battery drained down to "0" but so did my wifes that was not updated BUT after recharging it seems to hold much better now.

Satillete seems good and my tracking of my location has always been right on to the foot I think.......

Hi Larry-

I gave this a shot - naming the zip file "Update" (no extension) - I'd already tried "update.zip" and "update" - but not the mixed case "Update". No change in results.

Also, I checked the md5 sum of my download - and got the same value that Manacit provided above.

As unlikely as it seems that formatting could be the issue, since the G1 seems to be successfully accessing the card for other functions (photos, media, etc) - I figure I'll give it a shot. Seems the card was formatted "FAT", out of the box - so I backed up the contents, re-formatted FAT32, restored the files - and gave it another shot.

Nada. Same error. Tried it again with each of the variants of filename:

update, update.zip, Update.zip, Update

Could it really be the specific card? Doesn't make much sense, but...

Also - could someone (who's been able to successfully complete the process) please advise on the setting of:

"Use for USB storage" (under Settings-> SD card & phone storage)

Also - the status of the SD card "mount"? I just tried "Unmount SD card" (which made the available space and other stats go away) - and tried the process, again:

Same results. "E: Can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p1 (No such file or directory)"

One more thought: Any chance that it might depend on the amount of INTERNAL memory available on the G1? I've installed quite a few apps already - and, looking at this same settings page, I see:

Internal phone storage
Available Space: 38MB

Just wondering, since the update D/L is 45 MB - if there might be trouble if there's not enough available internal memory on the device?

I had my box checked - Though I don't think it matters.
I had something like 42MB of space left, so I don't think that's the problem either.

Maybe you could go out to staples or walmart or something, buy a small minisd card, use it to upgrade, then return it saying it wasn't the right card or something like that? It would work

Well, I've got an 8GB class 4 micro SD card on the way - so I guess I'll be abke to test that theory once it arrives. Still just doesn't make sense: is there anyone out there who personally experienced the failure with the stock micro SD, but had it work with another? If so - coukd you provide details on both cards?

Thanks again,
Billy

I downloaded from HaTaX's link from a couple days ago but I had to follow the directions on this threads page in order to get it to work. Haven't had any problems as of yet.

I had the boxes checked. I also got the same error when the phone was turn on. I got the E storage thing. I think it could be the link you might be using. After I take the kids to school will look up the link I used. It's on the forum just have to find it.

After doing update there was no ready of the card of memory or what I had left. This bothered me, but it came right back after an hour or two. I just used the FAT not FAT 32.

After doing this I have like 12 mg left but I have downloaded lots of applications to play with and will start to delete ones I don't really need.

I also plain on putting in at least a 4 g card (but some decent pricing on 8g at tiger direct.....) and maybe will have the update by then through tmobile.

Hmph - well, this is just plain annoying. I really can't believe that the difference in (functioning) SD cards could prohibit the update. I clicked through to the link provided by Scottdroid above - and while it was the same download file, there WAS one unique difference in the set of instructions - and I thought I might be on to something.

Those instructions called for 'making sure the G1 wasn't connected to a USB cable'. While I wasn't trying the upgrade with the device attached to a computer (understanding that might be problematic) - I was attempting the upgrade with the device plugged into the AC charger 'USB cable'. This is my defacto state while at home, given the current battery performance.

At any rate, I unplugged it, tried again, and:

Quote:
E: Can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p1 (No such file or directory)
As a long-time UNIX guy, I'm confident this is at the root of the problem - but I've no idea how to further diagnose, or resolve it.

Interestingly - using the File Manager application, I can at least navigate down into the filesystem, and confirm that, while I do have:

/dev/block

There's no mmcblk0p1

but rather, just mmcblk0

Very strange - and frustrating! Are there any Android developers on these forums - or am I better off looking for this help somewhere else?

Was your unit unplugged and completely powered down before you hit Home+Power?

That's really the main hurdle I encountered was that a few people's directions didn't inform me to power down after I renamed update.zip and unplugged.

So has anyone been able to access the SD card through the phone after the update? I can see the Removable Disk in My Computer, but if I try to access the card it tells me to please insert the disk.

???

Absolutely. Powered down (not just 'sleeping' - but OFF) and then hold Home and press End (power). It comes up with the alert triangle and device graphic - and then I'm able to hit ALT-L to view the logs, and then ALT-S to "apply sdcard:update.zip".

Interesting observation, though: I just noticed, for the first time, at the very top of the page - another error:

Quote:
Android system recovery utility
E:Can't open /cache/recovery/command
Then it goes into the description of the different key functions.

So - perhaps something is failing, even earlier, and preventing it from reading the SD card?

Very strange - and STILL frustrating.

Thanks for all the suggestions and clarifying questions.

Was having same issue as SnoWake and tried 3 different cards, third time was a charm. Think issue lies in the sd card itself. Don't know how/where or why, but it does. Seems some cards work and others just don't. Tried 1gig that came with phone, a 128mb sandisk and then the one that worked was a 512mb sandisk.

Worked great for me. For the others with the "Transcend" brand mincro sd cards, try buying a sandisk brand micro sd and see if it works. That should let us know if the card is the culprit.

Sorry for the double post. When you plug the phone in to your computer via USB you will see a USB icon in the notification bar (Where new texts, emails, downloads, etc.. show up). You must pull down the notification bar and press on the "USB Connectd" button and then press the "Mount" button.

UPDATE! After updating I noticed that my GPS is very slow and inaccurate. Before, it seemed to find my location pretty quick and was accurate with feet. Now it takes forever and is off by like 300 yards. Anyone else experience this.

Default the 2 different brands of cards

It is true, the sandisk works and the transcend doesn't work. Mine worked fine with sandisk, my wives wouldn't update with a transcend card, I switched the cards and I got hers to update just fine with the sandisk card

Very strange - I sure would like to hear from an engineer, or someone more in the know, who could explain why, exactly, the update works with one micro SD card, and not another.

As I mentioned, I've got an 8GB, Class 4 SanDisk card on its way - but what a bummer to have to wait until it arrives to try the update. I've got a couple of Garmin GPSrs that use microSD cards - but they're both out on loan. Time to call 'em in...

Thanks to all for the feedback - and (now, side-by-side) confirmation that there have been noted problems with the Transcend microSD cards. Weird...

Wow - I sure will be disappointed if this "upgrade" degrades the already marginal GPSr performance. But - I'd take my chances, if I could get my hands on it!

Too funny: Just as soon as I resign myself to not worrying about this upgrade until my new SD card arrives...

I get home from driving a friend to pick up his car, pull the phone out of my pocket, and mash some buttons to wake it up. It's then that I get the:

"An update is available for your device" message.

A few minutes and a couple of reboots later, I was sportin' RC29 - even WITH the Transcend SD card.

Now, to see how that GPSr behaves... and most importantly, battery life!

Thanks again to all who assisted,
Billy

I also have a sandisk card that came with and no problem updating. Battery still drains but just not as quickly but still evaluating this.

YES! That worked like a champ. Thanks a lot.

Hey this worked for me it took a while but it worked.. I guess (for me) renaming the file without the ".zip" is better than with it.. Thanks again man.. =)

Default Ota rc-30

Not sure how many of you in the community have received this update or if it has been announced in the forums already, but I just got pushed up to RC-30.

I did the manual update for RC-29 on Sunday and have just received this one tonight.

[Attempts to snap a pic have failed, really wish there was a way to take a screen shot]

Manually update your G1 to the new RC30:

My understanding is that Rc-30 was suppose to be between Nov 11-17th or something like that. So I assume if you did not get 29 this will be pushed instead.
