is the link for the non-rooted update file available somewhere? i mean the official cupcake update for non-rooted G1's and not the JF build or whatever. i remember when previous OTA updates where coming out people were downloading the update file and updating manually (just like the first post in this thread states).

The official OTA update hasn't been released yet. So once it is I'm sure you'll find it yelled about around here somewhere.

Only Dev or rooted phones have 1.5.

So are you saying that people aren't getting the update through an OTA update? I thought that T-Mobile released it a couple of days ago and some people were getting it in the US and the UK.

I'm not sure if people are. It usually only takes a day after the update is loose for someone to release the update.zip online, so unless only people that don't know how are getting it then I guess it can be.

Well I couldn't wait for the update any longer, I went ahead and installed it my self on the phone. The phone is a lot faster, smoother and not as laggy as before. When of the things I hated about the G1, its not as smooth as the iphone.

Well that all changed, its not super fast and not laggy. Its a little laggy in the text department (I have 400 texts at least), I haven't tested it much yet but so far its a good update. Doesn't hurt.

I have been following the cupcake 1.5 update for a month now.

Last week or so the OTA download was made available to people with developer G1s. Also, Google employees got the update.

T-Mobile (who I am with) is rolling out the update starting this month (May) in "waves" to us with the consumer G1. Speculation is that this is to avoid overloading servers with a mass OTA update.

So we just have to be patient.

By the way, you will get notice on your G1 when the update is available for your phone, OTA. So don't bother with going to your phone's "settings" menu and clicking "about phone" and then "system updates" which is where one would check to see if there are updates for the Android OS.

If you do that you will simply get the message "your system is currently up to date."

You can do that if you want, but after 100 or so of the above messages I assume you will get dismayed and stop doing it.

Can the update be downloaded from T-mobile, OTA, using Wi-Fi? I ask because I am in honduras and tmobile doesn't have a data roaming partner down here, so all my internet access for tmobile is through Wi-Fi. Any GPRS or 3G, and I need to use Tigo 3G(honduran company, my G1 is unlocked).

OK, I got impatient and just spent about three hours manually installing Cupcake via some great videos on YouTube. It was a little hairy at times because I did not follow directions to the letter, but now I have it and IT IS FANTASTIC.

So you know, there are different versions of Cupcake floating around out there. The one you want is in the link below. I am in the U. S. and I did not want the European Magic cupcake version that is out there.

Basically, if you want to do this manually, because you can't get it from T-Mo where you are or whatever:

1. You have to jailbreak your G1. What this means is that you have to wipe your phone (reformat in a sense) and install the original OS that came on the phone in Sept. 2008. It was RC29

You have to do this because the Sept. 2008 OS had a security hole (that has since been plugged by Android). It is this hole that allows one to mod the G1.

2. After you jail break or "root" the phone, you then install RC33 which was the update to RC29, the original OS.

3. After that you install Cupcake 1.5

It's all fairly easy, but it's time consuming to make sure you do everything correctly.

There is this one YouTube member who has the best tutorials (for both rooting and jail breaking the G1 AND also installing cupcake). Also he has links for every file you need to do everything.

Here are his jail breaking videos:

Part 2:

Here is his cupcake install video.

WARNING: AnthonyMoreno24 has two cupcake videos, the first was for the initial cupcake.

He later determined the JFv1.5 (Jesus Freke version 1.5) cupcake version was better, so he made a tutorial for that one. Which is linked above.

You only need to follow the instructions for the one video and install, not the earlier one.

Note: The hardest part is entering the key commands correctly. Make sure to read each videos comment sections as there are some tips in there too. For example, he says to rename certain files "update" That did not work for me. I had to name them "update.zip" Not sure why that is, but you can see that variation in naming in the comments section.

Bonus: In the cupcake video he also tells you to update the "radio" part of the OS. The radio update will improve the cell phone portion of the G1. So make sure to do that.

Yeah i'm in the same predicament as the user above. Any chance whether HTC or the android dev ppl will post the 1.5 firmware on their website so that non-rooted phones can download and install them.

Coz i'm really tempted to root my phone and install the JF1.5 cupcake. Just can't wait any longer.

If you click TWICE the YouTube links I have provided that will take you to YouTube and that member's posts.

On his YouTube postings he has links so you can download ALL the files you need to root your phone AND to install the Cupcake version he recommends.

His is a one-stop-installation place, so to speak. You don't need to look on the net for anything, he has everything that you need in his posts.

Default A Problem Some Of You May Having

OK, I'm no expert, but here is a problem some of you may be having and the solution.

The Problem

There's some people on the Net saying to rename the downloaded update file "update" without including the ".zip" extension.

Others say to rename the file "update.zip"

The correct name is "update.zip"

I suspect a problem arises for some of you because you have your Windows [file] Explorer "View" settings set to not display known file extensions (that includes the "zip" extension).

If you are hiding known extension types "update.zip" will appear as "update" without the "zip" extension.

Where the update has not installed properly for some people, the problem may be that he or she has 1) accidentally misnamed the update file as "update.zip.zip" or 2) misnamed it as "update" without any extension. More specifically:

1. Some people rename the Cupcake update to "update" WITHOUT the zip extension, exactly as people are telling them to do.

When they try to do the <alt> <s> command to perform the update the G1 reports back that it cannot find the "update.zip file" which is accurate since the file has been misnamed "update" and not "update.zip" The "zip" extension is missing. These people have Windows Explorer to show known file extensions.

2. The other error made is people who unknowingly have their Windows View settings set to "hide extensions for known file types"

Because these people cannot see the "zip" file extension, when they rename the update file to "update.zip" (again, as some experts tell them to do) they are misnaming the file "update.zip.zip.

They will then see the name as either being "update" or "update.zip" To the naked eye this appears correct, but it's incorrectly named and when the G1 looks for the file it won't find it because it has been misnamed.

So what to do?

The Solution:

First, change your Windows Explorer <View> settings to show all extension types:

To change the settings so that all and full extensions are shown:

Open <Explorer> (note that this is not your Internet browser, but your computer's "file" explorer),

Click <View>,

Scroll down to where is says <Hide extensions for known file types>

Uncheck the box.

After this change an entire file name, with extension, will show.

Correctly Renaming The Cupcake Update:

After changing your View settings you can make sure your downloaded Cupcake update is properly renamed to "update.zip" so that when you transfer it to your MicroSD card and enter the G1 Android update command, your G1 can find it.

So make sure the Cupcake update is properly named <update.zip>, transfer it to the G1's MicroSD card and go through the update procedures others have mentioned.

Hope this makes sense and helps. This was not an easy post to make clear without using a whole page and looking nuts.

Easier way...:

Name the file Update (on your pc desktop) ...
Right mouse the file and check its Properties...
Check the File Type ... it should be ZIP ... if not rename to update.zip

AND you are done .... Copy to the SDcard (which needs to be FAT32)...

1) Where did you get the download and 2) you need to rename the downloads to "update.zip" in Linux and rename to just "Update" in Windows... if it still doesn't work then post back and someone will walk you through the process...

Please help. I initially updated the phone then after about 2 days my g1 would not connect to the network through edge only wifi at work.

I've wiped several times, converted to fat32 and tried to flash back to rc29 and it was still not working properly.

This is what I'm getting on the android system recovery utility since I can't even get to the OS to mount the phone I've used a minisd reader to transfer the files.

E: can't open/cache/recovery/command

And when I tried to load the new radio

ota-radio-2_22_19_26I

after the 1.5 update

signed-kila-ota-148830.de6a94ca (are these two not compatible?)

and it says not verified (5 files)

What should I do?

Just a question, I've got a HTC Dream on Optus (in Australia). Will updating void my warranty?

Also, when Optus does push through 1.5, will I still be able to download and install that version?

Actually, one more thing, if I do install, will all my apps and data be erased?

To the question about Optus update push .... No OTA should ever erase your data or apps ... but some apps may not work the same as before ... but that then becomes the app's developer issue ....

Re the Warranty it shouldn't /// US T-Mobile says no ... but your quetions may be better answered by Optus ...

Default New Development phone

Greetings!

I'm fairly new, but I've found your posts incredibly helpful.

MY friend gave me an htc dream with android development code on it. Apparently her brother works for google in Taiwan. Anyways, I was wondering if there are any special step I need to take before upgrading it, since the code is a build I haven't read anything about. Most of what I've read typically suggests starting with RC29 (especially if I want to root it). But given its a weird build I don't want to accidentally brick it and any suggestions would be immensely appreciated.

I plan to run the phone with my old AT&T sim w/o data plan. I have wifi at home and work so don't really see the value in paying for G1 + AT&T slow data speeds.

Default Help!

okay so everyone i know that has the G1 has gotten this update except me! i've tried all the links... 2 of them says the link doesn't exist anymore. i've tried the google download link multiple times. when i save the file to my computer i change the file name to update but the update never works... i have a few questions...

1. when i restart my phone should i still have it connected to my computer?

2. when saving the file am i saving it right by just changing the name to 'update' because when i restart my phone and i get the yellow text after pressing alt+l it still says 'update.zip'

3. when saving the file to my computer and transferring the file to my 'removable disk' folder should i open the folder, copy and paste the 'update' folder just under the name file instead of opening the 'removable disk' folder?....

i'm just confused! someone please help!?

thank u.

Thanks for the link!

However, I find that when I'm trying to do the adb push for the radio firmware I get the following problem:

>adb push ota-radio-2_22_19_26I.zip /sdcard/update.zip
failed to copy 'ota-radio-2_22_19_26I.zip' to '/sdcard/update.zip': Permission denied

I've tried reformatting the sdcard w/fat32 and a few other things with no luck as of yet. Any ideas??

Here is what worked for me .. place the ota-radio-2_22_19_26I.zip into the tools dirctory.

then CD sdk.......\tools then issue the push command ...

adb devices (to make sure you see the SN of the phone device)
adb push ota-radio-2_22_19_26I.zip /sdcard/update.zip

I have Cupcake 1.5 and i'm getting funny "No Service" issues. Can I reinstall my cupcake update manually? The phone is unlocked using a Three UK Sim card. I have heard that rooting the phone will re-lock it. Therefore, if I have to root the phone to reinstall 1.5 I cannot do it as I don't want to have to get the phone re-unlocked again.

I was having the same problem. I had to down grade to RC29 using the dreaming.nhb file and then just updated to RC30 to RC33 then cupcake. Its takes 30 minutes or so but works like a charm. makes sure you format your micro SD car to Fat32. good luck.

This has been my experience with the myTouch as well. I suspect the improvements are due to updating the landscape<->portrait code and changes necessary for the gestures api.

I got the update a few days ago and I am now really pleased with the phone.
