Default Reading your hotmail on the G1's email app

I have managed to get the G1 to download emails from my Hotmail account (something that a lot of people are having trouble doing I understand). I have been informed that these settings will work in the UK and most of Europe but I cant verify if it works elsewhere. Maybe you will have to set your locale on the hotmail webpage to UK to get it working.

Anyway here are the POP3 and SMTP settings for hotmail using the email app supplied on the device. I have tried and been able to read from my hotmail account.

POP server: pop3.live.com
Authentication type: SSL
User name: Your Windows Live ID, for example yourname@hotmail.com
Password: The password you usually use to sign in to Hotmail or Windows Live

SMTP server: smtp.live.com
Autentication type: use TLS

edit: These settings now work when forwarding email to gmail

Hmmm as much as my Hotmail is just my spam account I may just set this up as it could be useful on the handset. Cheers Mr Stranger

Have you enabled SSL? Mine did that until I enabled SSL which is required. You might need to set your locale in hotmail to be UK if you live in the States. All I know is, the directions I posted work perfectly in the UK

Just to add also make sure your username is the full email address. I just made that mistake and just put the first part and got the same message

setting my account to UK didn't work either... not sure if it is our physical location or not... can you set up a dummy account that I can test here?

(EDIT) I TAKE IT ALL BACK!!! upgraded to K9-0.98 and set my email to the UK and I can now receive hotmail on the phone your assumption is confirmed!

I'm in the US. I did the following in hotmail:
  1. Login to Hotmail.
  2. Mouse over Options, and then click on More Options.
  3. Click on View and edit your personal information link under “Manger your account” section.
  4. Click on Registered Information link.
  5. For both Home Location and Work Location, change the following details to specified values: Postal Code: WC1B 3DG
    Constituent Country: England
Time zone: London, United Kingdom - GMT
  6. Click on Save when done.
  7. Go back to Hotmail, and ensure that the display language of Hotmail is set to English by mouse over the Options.
  8. Configure your email client or other webmail service (Gmail configuration to access Hotmail via POP3) to access and download Hotmail Inbox via POP3 protocol, using the Hotmail POP3 and SMTP configuration settings.
  9. The email client or another mail service provider should be able to access, login and download or send through Hotmail without error.
  10. Once Hotmail POP3 and SMTP support is enable on the account, it’s possible to change and revert back to your original web interface language, home and work location.
Then on my phone:

POP server: pop3.live.com
Authentication type: SSL
User name: Your Windows Live ID, for example yourname@hotmail.com
Password: The password you usually use to sign in to Hotmail or Windows Live

SMTP server: smtp.live.com
Autentication type: use TLS

credit goes to ageless stranger and danielbb

I tried to use the standard email app for hotmail when i first got my g1, just entering my address and password and it didn't work. When i saw this thread i thought i woul give it a try. Weirdly i just put in address and password again and it worked without changing any settings.

hmm...mine still doesn't work....even with all the settings changed in hotmail and im using k9 mail client on my phone...
but i found something interesting in the article which provides pop3 & smtp settings for hotmail...this might explain why mine doesn't work and others if they think they are doing everything right and just can't connect to the smtp server.

"Windows Live blog announced that Hotmail users in the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, France, Japan, Spain, Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands are the first to enjoy the free POP3 and SMTP service as part of Hotmail wave 3 roll out. Good news is, all Hotmail users should have POP3 and SMTP enabled and turned on in their account by end of 2009."

Bloody phone, mine now only works the first time I add the account, on subsequent inbox requests I get a connection error. If I delete the account and add it again it works, lol

Mr. Bloppy can you confirm whether the above solves your problem or not, most people who can't use hotmail say the above fixes the problem for them. A few people still have issues though.

it may not be the problem anymore... according to them it is no longer limited to certain countries....

"We are happy to announce that POP3 technology is now available to Hotmail users in the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, France, Japan, Spain, Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands. If you don’t see your country or region in this list, never fear, we’ll be rolling POP3 out to more parts of the world later this year.

UPDATE: As of March 12, 2009, POP3 access is now available to Hotmail users WORLDWIDE."

Nothing quite as satisfying as a redundant thread, the authors of chomp and steel will be thinking the same thing about their tasty virtual keyboards when (if) the next update includes one.

I realise this isn't the point of the thread but you can set your gmail account to check and download your hotmail.

Your hotmail will then be synced to the phone at the same time (and will be marked as coming from your hotmail account if you check the option).
