Default Will The G1 Get Another Update ???

I have a G1 and am waiting for another update. The 1.6 is ok but want a better build. If T-Mobile /Google does not give us one I would expect the hackers to "Fix" the 2.0 or 2.1 to fit on a G1. Do not think I am alone here.

I think the point is that the G1 specs are a little low for the feature set of 2.0+, i currently have a G1 and am getting the G2 tomorrow

I do not agree. I paid $400 usd for my phone and I do not axpect updates for only one year. I expect the next update to have the option to keep/run all or many programs on the SD Card and updates for at least another year. If they can't do it I hope the hackers will.

You can disagree all you like but it wont change anything.

Besides you pay for the phone and what is on it, if they give us updates that is a bonus in my eyes. And they cannot change if a phone cannot fit nor handle the next iteration.

I am hoping for just one more update that gives me the ability to run apps from off an SD card. If they don't do it, I will just root the phone soon.

I find it very frustrating, that I was an early adopter. I was one of those that took a chance on a Google OS, and am being left in the cold. If ANYTHING, we are the ones that they should be supporting the most.

I am finding this VERY frustrating. No more updates after a year? How many smart phone companies get away with that? I am a Google fan, but I am feeling pretty screwed, all in all. I am seeing apps that say you need the 2.0 OS to get features to work... Thanks Google. Thanks for screwing over your most devoted.

It's not Google who would be "screwing us", it is HTC for not publishing a release of 2.0/2.1 to fit on the G1 and run flawlessly. An update is coming though, T-Mobile has confirmed that they have prepared the 2.0 and 2.1 update for the Magic and Dream but have yet to push it over the air.

HTC/Tmobile did move us to version 1.6 with the awesome navigation feature. This really improved the value of my G1 to me! I'm still about 5 months away from the end of my 2 year contract so an upgrade to version 2.0 would be nice. Though there are rumors of Tmobile working to push out a version of 2.0 for the G1, the more time that passes the less likely we are to see another update.

Other past rumors indicated work being done to allow apps to be moved to the SD card (A2SD) and this would be an important step to allow a version of 2.0 to work on the G1 (and generally allow us to install more than a handful of apps).

Because of the large number of G1s out there, I think it's a good idea for HTC and TMobile to release another update. With each passing day my hope fades... HTC wants to sell new phones after all...

It would be nice if the G1 gets 2.1...or even 2.0...or even a custom update specifically optimized for the G1 that contains some of the newer features...

But I'm not getting my hopes up any time soon...

2.0/2.1 has been out for quite some time now, so I'm sure it could have been pushed to the G1 by now...

On a side note...isn't the Magic/MyTouch 3G in the same position as the G1??

If your phone is rooted, you can flash openEclair.

Not really, The Magic has much more memory. The main issue with the G1 is that it doesn't have enough memory for 2.x. If you want to flash a custom 2.x rom for the G1, you must have apps2sd because the memory isn't big enough for Eclair.

I meant isn't it the same position as not getting a 2.1 update any time soon...

Depends on your carrier. Its hardware should be enough for 2.1. Rogers here said they'll push 2.1 by mid-year. I have a Magic now, but I can't root it. It has a real perfect SPL. If I were able to, it would have gotten good openEclair some time ago and kept it. If your Dream is rooted, you can try Eclair. It looks so good. It'll be so laggy though you'll switch back.

EDIT: Credits to the Nandroid devs. They made life so much easier

The answer is yes.
I read the news. T-mobile G1 has started the update from 2/25/2010.
This update only improves the call quality and nothing related to other system stuff.
But I'm still waiting for it.

News/rumor was posted again today that Google is requesting that all devices be upgraded to version 2.1 2nd quarter. Some devices will need to be slicked. This doesn't surprise me given that the G1 would need to support some form of AppsToSD. I don't see that as a big problem since it's easy to mount the phone, and copy data from the SD card to a PC to back it up. Calendar and email data already lives in the cloud and the apps (even paid ones) can easily be downloaded from the Market after the upgrade.

The source of the news/rumor was the Android and Me blog.

Yeah I read that too...
I'm just waiting to see if it actually happens or it ends up just a big fat rumour...

I just got this update, I haven't tried the phone yet too much to notice a difference. I'm in Illinois.

After playing with it a little, it seems a bit faster to me, calls sound the same but I never had a beef with that anyways.

Cool

Yep, I just got the 1.6 update. I got really excited...thought it was Eclair...but it's just Donut with sprinkles.

I would LOVE to be able to run apps from the SD.

I got the notice of the update was available but told it told it to install later.

Any other opinions on whether I should permit the update to install?

I found out from a guy that I know that works at T-Mobile that they are planning on rolling out 2.0 (maybe 2.1, Don't know for sure) in late 2Q or early 3Q for G1's (maybe Touch too, again I don't know).

Sounds like June or later. I was hoping for sooner, but as they say: better late than never! I'm okay with 1.6 with one exception. I can only fit 16 - 20 extra apps on my G1. Bring on Apps2SD!

I got update last Thursday.
But now I hate this update!!!

After I got it, my phone turn on and off by itself. I didn't know what happen so turn it off. Before the update, the battery was 100% and I didn't see any reason why it went down to 0% after the update. When I got home after work, I turned it on and found the battery is 90%. It was so weird!!!

From that day on, every time when I talk on the phone for about 20 minutes, the battery drops from 100% to 0% sharply and turns off by itself. After 20 minutes, I turn the phone on and found the battery is still 80%.

What's wrong with the update, my phone, or my battery???

The update shouldn't affect how the battery is read. Drop in battery level immediately after update is normal. Contact tech support, the problem is probably in the hardware.
