Today i picked up a second hand g1 still in mint condition and have popped my t-mobile contract sim card in, even thought the phone looked unused i still performed a factory reset. Normally when i've done this on all phones previously i have had to do a lot of software updates however the G1 didn't do any. Will these come later or do i have to do them myself? I would really like to get the software V1.5 on there but it seems stuck at 1.1. Any advice would be greatly appreciated thanks.
*sorry if this question has been answered a million times just found the forums a bit confusing as don't know what i should expect from the phone itself*
Thanks I did try the system update button but it kept saying I'm up to date even though it's only v1.1 which I thought was odd. Just going to have to wait amd hope I guess.

they say that roughly 48 hours after you've purchased a G1 it should update with cupcake (1.5). However if it doesn't, search the forum, there are links to download the factory version and install it on your phone. Or you can call 611 and ask them to "push" it to your phone.
Depending how good you are with a computer and the phone, you could look at "rooting". That way you can get the updates and even better "ROM'S" software.
Well worth reading up on if you think you could do it. Here's a couple links for the info.
It's been several days now and still no update to 1.5 starting to think i need to do it myself, is it possible to do this without rooting the phone? And if so is there a link where i can download the update for a UK T-mobile g1.

dont quote me on this, but i think i remember reading that T-mobile are no longer hosting the old updates.
On a side not, if your looking at rooting your phone, have a look at "Recovery Flasher" in the market.

You dont even need to root your phone if your scared. just download the cupcake OTA and install it on your phone, very simple to do and no wiping required!!
1. How do you get the notification sound for e-mail (only) to turn off. I don't want to keep hearing that when a new message comes in. I want to be notified about calls though and Appt if that will still work.
2. If I turn on WiFi when I am home to get my e-mail etc do I need to turn it off when I leave the house or will 3G service turn on when I am out of Wifi Range? (I ask because when I turned it on I no longer see 3G signal in the upper part of the screen)
When you are in e-mail click the menu button and select notification, then select silent. It will only be silent for e-mail when you do it this way. It worked for me.

If you have both WiFi and mobile data turned on, and you are connected to a WiFi point, it will use WiFi only.
If you have both WiFi and mobile data turned on, and you are NOT connected to a WiFi point, it will use data, but will check for any WiFi hotspots.
As long as mobile data connection is turned on when u leave the house, it will automatically switch to using that once you go out of range of the WiFi.
