Thanks to the great people over at XDA we have the 2.3 update early. Flash this signed tmobile pc10img.zip (rename the file PC10IMG.zip after download). it is the 2.3 update. Put the pc10img.zip on the root of your sdcard, MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A FULL BATTERY BEFORE DOING THIS if your phone shuts down in the middle you will own a fully bricked G2. boot your phone by pressing vol. Down and pwr at the same time, it will ask of you want to apply the update, press yes. Let it do its thing and follow what it says.
If you are rooted DO NOT USE THIS it WILL UNROOT your device and you will go S-on.
Also, root has not been found for this yet, so if you want to root don't update.
Netflix may not work at this time with this update
EDIT:
Took down the links till I can find the new build. It will be 2.3.4.
Edit#2
Its here! The OTA to 2.3.4! If you installed the older 2.3.3 you have to wait for the OTA to be pushed or downgrade.

The Following 8 Users Say Thank You to Joe Dirt For This Useful Post:
This did not work for me, but I'm not sure I used the correct steps on my G2 (not rooted!).
What I did was;
- downloaded the file
- renamed the file to PC10IMG.zip
- copied the file on the root of the SD card
- Reboot with volume down + touchpad + Power button
Nothing happened, the phone just boots up as normal.
Thank you!

Sorry, why do I need to check the file size and checksum??
To ensure you have a good download. If you try to flash a bad/corrupted download it could mean brick.

Make sure you rename it PC10IMG.zip and make sure its just on the sdcard not in any folders. you bootloader will scan the sdcard for that file name and ask you to " press vol up to apply the update."
Hmmm I must be an idiot, I can see PC10IMG.zip at the bottom of the list when I go into androzip, I reboot with volume + down, takes me to the bootloader, I hit power on hboot, it scans but then goes back to bootloader after that. Am I missing a step?
No, the bootloader should scan the sd for the pc10img. and ask you to press vol up to update down to decline. So the file isn't named correctly or isn't on the root of your sdcard.
Download astro file manager free from the market. Find the file, I would guess its under the download folder. Long press the file, hit edit, move. Press the file up button, paste it under /mnt/sdcard
alright so i had finally gotten it to scan the file, even saw a tiny progress bar on the top right of the screen, but for whatever reason it did not ask me if i wanted to apply the zip. i think im giving up.
also, i just tried it again and noticed it said the first 2 files were incorrect the .diag . nbh i believe? i just dont know what i could have done wrong.
i also just noticed that the md5 didnt match the one on that link you just posted so redownloading now, seems to me a bigger file downloading this time. and joe dirt once again THANKYOU VERY VERY VERY MUCH for dealing with me on this. would have been booted and hung by xda a long time ago!
Updated yesterday no issues so far. I love the new darker layout with green icons. I can tell whether im on 3 or 4G now. Has most of the new features of Gingerbread except for the keyboard. Although it does have the new copy/selection tabs. It was a bit faster but went ahead and downloaded Spareparts+ and WOW! what a difference. No longer get a lag when switching from landscape to normal layout.
If I flash this update manually... will I be able to receive the OTA from TMO once they release it? Or will I have to do something like go back to the stock ROM to be able to get OTA's?
I am getting pretty impatient waiting for TMO to drop the Gingerbread update.
This file is said to be the OTA gingerbread, it is "stock" so when tmo pushes the OTA they will see your phone has the update so you wouldn't get it. when/if other updates push you will still get those.
a few things...first a mod should move this as it does not require any type of rooting to perform the update since its just a leaked official. Second, has anyone had issues with netflix after doing this update? And third, if I install this will I not get the tmobile ota which may have additional features?

Netflix doesn't work at this time, they need to update the app.
It wasn't in the root section, the mods moved it here.
What OTA are you talking about? This is the final, tmo should have it but are waiting to push it for some unknown reason.
Is anyone else having problems with the Facebook app after installing this update? My notifications are all mixed up and it has problems retrieving them. I also have been randomly losing data coverage. A soft reboot fixes it, but I'm just wondering if it's just me.
for some reason the lockscreen sliders and the dock are 2.2 when in landscape mode. also, the music app adds downloaded music to the music app only for a little while and then it removes it later. yet it is still on my SD card.
Hello, first post here, and I'm also dying for the Gingerbread update. I have 2 questions for anyone who has updated:
1. What version number is it? 2.3.3 or 2.3.4?
2. Does tethering and portable wi-fi hotspot still work? I heard rumors that they were going to remove that feature because with 2.2 the G2 is able to do that for free without subscribing to T-Mobile's special tethering package.
Thanks for the update on the version number. Is there any way you could check the tethering & wifi functionality? I'm mainly concerned about the wifi, and that's the easiest one to check. Just enable portable wifi hotspot, set up the connection, and see if you can connect to the internet on your computer via your phone.
if i decide to do the update and find that i cant use the hotspoting can i download the stock tmo froyo rom and revert back to 2.2 or will updating to 2.3 gingerbread change my baseband and not allow the revert:?
I don't think it's possible to downgrade. I'm also pretty sure that once you upgrade to the official 2.3, rooting it will also no longer be possible, as of right now.
If someone could confirm or deny the wifi hotspot and tethering capabilities on 2.3, we could make an informed decision about upgrading to the official version of gingerbread, or using the cyanogenmod rooted version.

link of said cyanogenmod rooted version:? and will i be able to downgrade if i do this one:?
I've never rooted a device and I don't know how to do it. I don't know if you can downgrade later. I just know it exists and other people have done it.

I just upgraded my G2 using this method and worked like a charm!! Easy as pie and running gingerbread smooth as silk...my favorite features:
-BLACK notification bar..call me crazy but black background on notification bar FTW!!
-LOVE the 3G/4G indicator..the "H" always had me guessing
-my battery life is incredible! Had a full charge right at the update at 7:00 pm..send plenty of texts, bout 20 min of web and 3 phone calls @ roughly 10-15 min apiece with wifi running the entire time and @ 90% battery at 1:30 am!
-the battery icon in the notif bar is now vertical and prof looking as opposed to the horiz cartoony (imo) batt icon that was the 2.2 stock
-Above all my G2 is running smooth as silk! no lag, no overheating, like i just bought it with gingerbread installed!
Personally if your not rooted, I'd go for it! Worst case scenario youre left with an (95%) official update without all the TMO bloatware (which Im assuming would be the remaining 5% lol)..btw my G2 was totally stock with a full factory reset before trying this..updates own personal reset did the trick for me, no problems whatsoever yet! KUDOS!!!

The T-Mobile G2 came as the successor to the G1, the worlds very first Android phone. The G Series has come a long way since then, but has retained one major element: a stock Android experience that forgoes any manufacturer customizations to the us... Read More
