OK being a first time android user, it happen to me too, is all because of sync settings.
Do you use Facebook or twitter, you need to go into the apparently, go into setting and change how often you want the apparently to sync for background updating.
The same goes with email and Gmail. For the stock email, you do the same by going into the apparently, settings and update intervals. With Gmail, you go to the phone settings, accounts and sync, then you can choose if you want your Gmail to sync of not, same with contacts and calendar.
Also go to display and turn down the brightness, don't use auto-brightnes, it uses more battery.
Any other app that syncs, unless you need it, turn them off.
Hope that helps.
