Default Kernal?

I rooted my phone with the guide provided in the sticky (Used fendor rom)...

I really just wanted to get WiFi tethering (android-wifi-tether - Project Hosting on Google Code)

But it says my kernel doesn't support it?

1.6 does support? How do I upgrade my kernel?

You'll have to change your rom. Check the settings, if it is 1.5 then change rom and try again.

Do you have the Mytouch 1.2, I don't know that Fender roms are compatible with Mytouch 1.0, the kernel is built in with the rom and isn't just something you can flash over your rom, so I'd say just get a new rom, one that will definitely work with your phone. Go to Androidspin.com and look up their in directories all the roms you can flash for your phone. Good Luck!
