Default UNLOCKING question

I just picked up a used Mytouch 3G to mess around with until all the new Androids start hitting the market this summer (been an iPhone user till now). Anyway I want to UNLOCK it to use it on AT&T (yea, I know, no 3G but for $120 I don't care - I can always resell it).

My question is: This phone didn't come with a SIM card. Do I need a T-Mobile SIM (active or inactive) to unlock it or can it be done with no SIM or my AT&T SIM?

If it needs a T-Mo SIM (and I'm not a T-MO subscriber) what can I do? Would a Pre-paid SIM work? I can always get one off eBay for a couple bucks I guess.

To my knowledge with my old LG Vu I didn't need a sim card. I'm not sure how it is going T Mobile from At&t though. You don't know anyone that would let you use their sim just in case?

How do you plan on getting it unlocked btw? I came upon your thread from searching for a good unlocking site. I need to get my touch unlocked too...

I wasn't aware of it, but It was already unlocked by the seller then he (properly) did a full reset before sending it to me which forced the need to re-activate with the GMAIL account.

I put in the AT&T SIM and since the phone DEFAULTED to a TMOBILE APN I couldn't get to GMAIL to activate because the TMO APN didn't work on AT&T.

The ONLY thing I was able to do was go to a TMOBILE store (I have no friends or family on TMO with Data) and find a nice salesguy who put his SIM in my phone so I could activate it.

I am afraid to try and ROOT this phone because I'll be back to the same problem again because I assume ROOTing resets everything to default. I have tried ALL the other tricks as well and nothing worked.

As for unlocking, I've dealt with this guy on eBay a number of times and he is reasonable ($11) very fast and very helpful: UNLOCK by Code TMobile HTC G2 G1 myTouch 3G Touch Pro 2 - eBay (item 130379547311 end time Apr-30-10 09:54:33 PDT)

To UNLOCK you need the SIM of the provider you WANT to use.

How long have you been with T-Mobile? If it's three months or more, they'll give you the unlock code for free, although it takes a week or two. Just call 611.

If you have a data plan on your ATT put in this APN settings

APN: wap.cingular
Proxy: leave blank
Port: leave blank
Username:WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM
Password:CINGULAR1
Server: leave blank
MMSC: http://mmsc.cingular.com
MMS Proxy: wireless.cingular.com
MMS Port: 80
MCC:310
MNC:410
APN Type: leave blank

I'm well aware of that information.

The problem was the phone wanted to activate through gmail which requires web access. The DEFAULT APN on the phone was T-MOBILE and my SIM was AT&T so I couldn't get on the web. I couldn't change the APN because I couldn't get to the phones APN settings (or ANY menus) without activating a gmail account (which is on the web so I couldn't activate)! It's a big catch-22.

See the problem? I had to go to a T-MO store and "borrow" a SIM w/DATA to let me get past the gmail activation screen. Once I registered my gmail account everything was fine.

In order to ROOT and install ROMS I have to clear all data which would put me right back to that same problem .... wrong APN, no web access, no register, no menus, no ROM, no ROOT, NO service, NO phone.

I've found and tried 5 or 6 different "tricks" through Google to get past this problem but none of them work anymore. All the "tricks" were pretty old so a software upgrade may have blocked them.

In that case when you come to the activation point, press menu and you will get a pop up asking you to add apn. That is how I did on mine

I can SWEAR I tried that as well and it didn't work. I'm afraid to try it again!

If I missed that "trick" I'm going to shoot myself because I ran to 3 different T-MO stores to find someone who would help me out when I first got the phone and couldn't activate.

Did it work on 1.6 on the MT3G from T-Mo?

Thanks,
Ed
